True Ricardo, that's why I never accepted that definition.
Because I believe it is a definitive genre.
Here's my take on the term "pop music".

The term "pop music" was first used in the late sixties
and was given to the music that was popular *in those days*
    at *that* moment.

It was used for bands such as the Byrds, Beatles Simon and
    Garfunkle and such.

In our time pop is Radiohead, singer/songwriter, The Corrs,
The B52's and such bands and artists. This means that it is
not rock nor folk or R&B or blues. Its well, pop music ;-))

I know, this is not a perfect
    explanation but then, what is??

Sorry guys, I can't resist. Skip this post if you are bored of this topic.

The black album is a fuckin' classic.

There are no fillers on that album (actually the last met album that didn't have them). From the popular but in their category perfect songs like Sad But True and Sandman, to the 2 ballads Unforgiven and Nothing else, which for the first time feature James truly singing, to the darker and a bit more complex songs like My Friend of Misery, or the God That Failed, which also prove Jaymz's supriority when it comes to lyrics......... Nothing Else was not written to make radio succes, IMHO. James dislikes AJFA, why should we blame him.........

I would like to kindly warn all the ytsejammers that will be seeing Dream Theater in the following days, to always warn the readers about the content of your post.

I don't want to know the set lists until I hear them live for myself.

So how it is done, is to say *SPOLERS*, in the subject of your message, and before the critical part of the post, which reveals bits and pieces from the concert.

thanks, Tibor (who is not a senior jammer, but thaught that he might warn the ones that are even newer)

Twin Peaks theme is one of my favourite instrumentals of all time. Great great stuff

Forget the CDs, see Virgil Donati. The man's a god.

Its funny because Sad But True and Struggle Within are my two least favourite songs on the disc. I think Enter Sandman is good, but has just been massively overplayed. Its not that I don't like heavy music, but it has to be really good, and has to fit with what else is being played, for me to like it (like Kill Em All or Master of Puppets), or else it just sounds boring.

Ya know, I just saw it in the store a month ago and picked it up - there's definitely some cool tunes on there! And about the Laura Palmer Theme and Eve - I have to wonder if LPT was inspiration for Eve since they are so similar. Also makes me wonder that if they would ever consider playing Eve again, if they would insert part of LPT in the middle ALA Peruvian Skies (w/Cigar and Sandman)

For those curious about current setlists and what will be played here in the US: Mike just emailed me about 2 of the current setlists out in Europe (since I assist with handling the setlist tourography) and he responded to a guys post on MP.com asking if DT would headline since Maiden cancelled due to Janick Ger's injury. DT is gonna headline (in Europe in Maiden's place) and they are playing SFaM all the way thru - tho I must mention that on the one show that I have a setlist for, there are no solos (extended intro to THE or key solo in TDoE). For the US when they headline, considering what they are doing in Europe, my *guess* is they will do SFaM all the way thru again plus extra stuff which I'm sure will be different from last time, tho I can't be for certain.

    I adore this tune.

Wouldn't it be cool if Jordan actually played this live, with a single pink spotlight on him? (I don't know why, but Twin Peaks always makes me think of the colour pink.) Then when Jordan finishes that, the purple light fades out and the blue spotlight opens on JP sitting on his stool with the acoustic guitar for Regression. Hmm, I think I would like that.

I think they should show images of Laura Palmer on the video screens too, because she is a babe. In fact, I think DT should write a new concept album. "Twin Peaks part II: The FBI Agent and the Donut."

Yesterday I went to the biggest music store here in my town, and there's this Strato album Infinite and Satch's new album. But, my wallet can only afford one! I own 4 Satch albums, Flying_IABD, Surfing_WTA, ST, and Crystal_P. Love all of em, esp Flying (thanks to the jam for the recommendations back then). As for Strato, I never heard of them, and this is gonna my first one, cause this album is the only one I can find here. So, I need recommendation/sugestion/review on both, so i can decide which one to pick...

Well since you don't have any Strato, I would suggest you buy Infinite, (unless of course you can find Episode). If you already had a lot of Strato, I would get the Satch because it's quite different from his other stuff and the last few Strato cds are kinda the same sounding. (no offense to Jens) :) IMO, Trevor

Wow! You are one of the very few who could possibly feel that way. I also liked Derek alot, but being a keyboard/piano player for 14+ yrs, Jordan's talent and contribution could not be more noticable. Yes Derek, was good, but anyone who has any experience playing keyboards knows that Jordan is GOD. Plain & Simple. (Your opinion, my opinion, what does it all really matter...)

thanks making my life hell (kidding) I burned my 1st mp3's on CD (the 45 min set of the LITS site, from when theyopened for Deep Purple) Came out pretty good. The person who recorded it seemed to have problems with the mic, but hey, its still good, its DT.

As for the Motley Crue album, I can say this, I compare it to a KISS record. Its just a straight foward rock n roll record. They went back to the "fun" songs like:

Hell on High Heels 1st band on the Moon (which is a cool song) She need rock and roll Punched in the teeth by love

I could go on, you get the point. There is a song called fake which talks about how they were played by all the big record execs, its a slap in the face to those who worked for em, then deserted em when grunge got big. :)

Anyway, getting a new winshield today :) Crack kills ya know.

Well, its up to you...personally, Id go for the new Strato. The new Satch is VERY techno and unless you really dig that kind of music, I wouldn't reccomend it.

Infinite, like all of Strato's albums, sounds in whole just like anything else you'd get from them, but IMO they do an amazing job on it. Jens really shines and theres some really awsome orchestral stuff on it, definately their best since Episode. I know a lot of people don't like Strato because "every album sounds the same" but really, who cares? Its damn good rockin melodic metal any way you look at it, and thats all that matters, right? I mean, do you complain that Maiden uses the same formula on all their albums? Seriously, try to find one Maiden album that does NOT have a "Em, C, D" chord progression or guitar harmonies in relative 3rds. If you enjoy it, listen to it.

For someone who doesn't know, I wouldn't call Strato progressive by any stretch of the imagination! The one right before I got involved (4th dimension) is a little freaky/progressive here and there, but from then on it's been pretty pure melodic (pop-?) metal!

None taken. By the way: as we all know, the official position of every band that ever existed is that "our latest album is our best one to date." :) (But IRT Strato, a lot of people are partial to "Episode" though, for some reason, even though it's not our latest one. Go figure! Philistines!!)

Funny you should mention that. The first time I heard Eve(on The Silent Man single) I thought it sounded like the theme from Twin Peaks :-) If I'm not mistaken, Eve was written around the time that Twin Peaks aired, and the liner notes from Images & Words give credit to Bob and the dancing dwarf, so it would be safe to say that Eve is sort of an hommage to Angelo Badalamenti's excellent soundtrack.

Heard some Jordan Ruddess solo stuff. Pretty good, but I didn't like his singing songs (album "Listen"). I would recomend "Resonaince" for the lovers of cool improvised instrumental piano music.

I also finally listened some of the Planet X new album, I hated it. I never really digested the first one. It's just so lame boring, repetative, just odd time signatures. Dunno who composed this music but he seriously lacks music ideas.

Derek seemed to fit very good in DT (IMHO) and I LOVED his sound. I also love what he did on first Platypus, I just love that groove on that album. Ice Cycles is such a let down compared to the 1-st! ;((((( The Derek I worship is the one presented on the instrumental "25". But on his own, with this bunch of guys, .... I don't care how good they play, or the said-to-be Virgil Miracle, the music is garbage IMO.

Finally, I listened the tribute to ELP, with knowing all in all only 3 ELP songs. Holy Christ, .... it's been a while since I've been stroke by music as this!!!!!

There was this instrumental "Hoedown" (sp?) that seems like the compositional theme I would love to come up with once in my life and then die peacefully. :) I just love such well-thought thematic melodies wrapped in an awesome instrumental.

I'll see to get this on CD. So if I like this one, would someone recomend me an ELP album to start with?

    >I'll see to get this on CD. So if I like this one, would someone >recomend me an ELP album to start with?

The best one to start with is either "Trilogy" (source of "Hoedown") or "Brain Salad Surgery". Of course, any of their earlier albums are great -- it wasn't until the late '70s when they started turning out the mediocre discs [*], including one of the worst ever progrock albums, 1994's "In The Hot Seat". Another choice one to get is the double "Welcome Back My Friends To The Show That Never Ends" album, which features the highlights of their studio albums, and also comes off really well in the energy department. It comes from a time when Greg Lake did not want ELP to be Greg Lake and Band...

[*] The fact that the tribute CD includes material pretty much exclusively off their first five or so albums should serve as a warning: beware of anything ELP after 1977, including live albums (Emerson had hand surgery which severly hampered his playing on 1993's "Live at the Royal Albert Hall", for instance).

I don't know if Al has chimed into this hi-fi thread yet, but I thought I'd post Al's suggestions for the ultimate mid-fi system. This guy knows his stuff, kids.

    Here goes:

Due to the incredible amount of private e-mail I've been receiving regarding audio gear, I've put together the ultimate mid-fi system for all to see. IMHO, this is the BEST gear available in this price class. Here is a complete *UNTOUCHABLE* Mid-fi system for under three grand..

    Rotel RB 991 amplifier (200 WPC) - $900.00 http://www.rotel.com/html/rb991.html Rotel RC-972 preamp - $500.00 http://www.rotel.com/html/rc972.html Rotel RCD-971 CD player - $699.99 http://www.rotel.com/html/rcd971.html

    Magnapan MMG speakers - (4' tall 2-Way/Quasi-Ribbon Planar-Magnetic) $500.00 http://www.magnepan.com/magdeal.html

DH Labs BL-1 SERIES II interconnects (two 1 meter pairs) $190.00 http://dhlabs-cables.com/docs/prod/BL1.htm

Nordost Flatline speaker cables (10 foot pair) $90.00 http://www.nordost.com/products/flatline.html

You can more than likely find most of this stuff below the quoted retail price. BTW, the 200 WPC amp is NEEDED to supply the power hungry MMG speakers. If you hurry, you can have this baby setup before the next DT release!

I have a feeling that after this big world tour in support of M2 they will all go off and do some more side things. James will probably do another Mullmuzzler. Another Liquid Tension, another Platypus, some more stuff, maybe some compilation junk, then get back together and put out a double disc CD.

AFAIK theyve only mentioned that the next disc will definately NOT be a concept album, and i really doubt they will make ad ouble album either.. so the best bet is that they will do a single packed to the max album of individual songs..

Someone mentioned the bassist of Cream... surprised no one mentioned his name: Jack Bruce. Monster player. (Played on FZ's _Apostrophe_ album on the title track.) Also played with Holdsworth.

I liked "The Perfect Storm." There was a good deal of character background for most of the main characters on the boat, except for one. We got to understand why all of them were on the boat pretty well from the scenes back on shore.

    #553?-9999

I like Metallica's music, old AND new. So there.

Actually, for the record, James >is< working on the next Mullmuzzler album with what spare time he has during the tour schedule. He also said that he wants to use the same lineup of musicians and so far they all sound eager and available to do so. :) -- KorgX3 can't wait for Mullmuzzler, the Next Generation.

    Hi.

For whom it may concern: Nightwish is going to play in Canada in November. I read this from their home page (Finnish section, for some reason this update is not on the English one) but they have no exact dates up yet. They are going to ROCK you! :)

I just came back from a holiday and read 32 jams. I was surprised to see that there was only one mail about the Roskilde accident. I personally was devastated to hear about it. Being a big Pearl Jam fan, I can't even begin to imagine what the band feels like now...

    Greetings...
