}I would also highly recommend a 19 or 21 inch monitor. with
}audio programs, you have a lot of stuff going on all over
}the screen, and you run out of space fast.
Doesn't Win98 support dual video cards/monitors? If you can't swing a
monitor as big as 19" or 21", you could always beg/borrow/steal
another 15" or 17" and run both video cards/monitors. That way you
could have your mixer in one screen and other apps (f/x plugins,
editing) in another. Plus, it is a pretty cool thing to drag from one
monitor and drop into another, with the cursor going off the right
side of one and right onto the left side of the other.
Is a dual monitor setup a RAM hog? anybody?

Any current PC will do exactly what you need it to do. It'll come down
to the price issue
and how long you want this computer around. Anything -- 450 mhz proc--
which are considered
slow/low cost by todays standards -- will be fine. Try to grab yourself
a 600 mhz or possibly an 800.
And then you get into if ya want a single or dual unit (quad isn't worth
mentioning)
-- dual is over kill for what you need. Your RAM
will be good at around 256 but at 512 it will groove. Mainly you're
going to want a fair amount of HD space.
Around 15-30 gigs if you really plan to be recording and editing on the
machine. Depending on what machine
you're chasing this stuff can be really cheap -- in both meanings of the
word.

It's true that JP has this problem (The 'jam' before THE was pretty horrible
in DC, I would've been much happier having him just play it exactly as on the
CD, but ah well...) However, there is a reason Steve Vai's group is called
Steve Vai! The band is there to support him, not to be a band as a whole...
And anyway, if you've ever seen Vai live, you know that this statement is
inaccurate. Mike Keneally, Steve'a keyboardist/2nd guitarist (is a God) is
much more of a shwo-off than Vai himself. I mean comeon, playing a keyboard
AND guitar solo at the same time, with one hand each? Vai just gives his fans
what they want, odd appearances, great music, and awesome stage presence.
BTW, the SFAM tab book is NOT OUT YET, which is probably why you can't find
it anywhere. It isn't due to be released until October, last time I checked.

actually, it's Filter AND Crystal Method. It was a collaboration for the
Spawn soundtrack (which is pretty decent, BTW). The instrumental of the
song is on one of Crystal Method's albums. I believe the song is on a
Filter album as well (with vocals and added guitar crunch, of
course)

Subject: Fates Warning creating prog metal?
Message-ID: <20000717213117.21068.qmail@web4804.mail.yahoo.com>
Regarding the comment from 93X saying that Fates Warning created prog metal, to
be perfectly honest, Nick Davis, the guy who hosts "The Metal Detector"
wouldn't know Prog Metal if it bit him in the ass. Nothing against Fates
Warning, but this guy (and that station) plays only straight ahead metal. I'm
surprised as hell that FW even got mentioned!!! What song did they play off
the new album?
Here's my take on the history of Prog Metal...
Other metal bands may have "evolved" into the prog realms over time
(Queensryche, Fates), in my eyes, the first straight-ahead no-holds-barred
prog-metal band was Watchtower right around 1990. You listen to them and you
KNOW it had NEVER been done before. (And let's be honest, they weren't doing
it all that WELL either). But in my eyes, that's where prog metal began.
Also, there were some prog-rock bands which had been around LONG BEFORE and
have been known to kick out some metal-sounding tunes (Rush and King Crimson,
for example) but I really wouldn't classify these two bands as metal.
If you want to argue as to when Fates Warning changed from Power Metal to Prog
Metal, it's up to you. Watchtower though is the first UNDENIABLY Prog-Metal
band, in my book at least.
Later! (I should probably stop getting paid to send e-mails here at work and
punch out now.)

DOUBLE DIP CD-ROMS
It's hard to imagine that 650MB isn't a big enough data store, isn't
it? But you've got to back up your hard disk, and with all those .mpgs,
avis, and MP3 files -- not to mention your *real* work -- and two-
thirds of a gigabyte isn't looking all that big anymore.
I wrote last week about a consortium that's been working on DVD-RAM,
which will let you read and write 4.6GB platters at your desktop. Here
now comes Sony and Philips, which invented the CD, with a "Double
Density CD-R/RW."
The idea is that with some minor tweaks -- squeezing the distance
between the "grooves" from 1.6 micrometer to 1.1 micrometer, and
shortening the pits from .833 micrometers to .623 micrometers --
engineers can double the amount of data that a CD-R can hold. Best of
all, it requires no new dyes and the same type of laser as existing
CD-Rs. The refinements are in new electronics and improved optics,
getting the laser to track closer and more precisely.
Sony, a company spokesman said, is part of the DVD Forum but is not
especially interested in DVD-RAM (though it's participating in DVD+RW
discussions.) The advantage of Double Density CD-R is that it's a
modification of an existing standard, the spokesman said, not a whole
new thing. That will make it cheaper than the competing technology;
while Sony declined to say how much more expensive Double Density
burners would be, he described the increase as "not significant."
Sony expects to finalize the format in September (shortly after the
first DVD-RAM drives are supposed to ship), and hopes to ship the
first drives by the end of the year -- but the spokesman sounded less
than entirely certain of that deadline.
Oh yes -- some form of copy protection appears to be part of the spec.
For your information, Sony's ATRAC format (used on MiniDiscs) allows
only first-generation digital copies.

Message-ID: <000c01bff044$6d68f2a0$823688cf@jammer>
Gibson Says: AOL/NetZip/Netscape *Are* Snooping On You
Steve Gibson (of "Shields Up fame--- http://grc.com ) sent out a security
alert yesterday:
The NetZip, Netscape/AOL, and Real Networks Download Utilities
*ARE* Spying On Us!
NetZip's "Download Demon" was purchased by Real Networks and
renamed "Real Download". then Netscape/AOL licensed it from Real
and called it "Netscape Smart Download." By watching the "packet
traffic" flowing in and out of one of my machines while
downloading a file through the Internet, I verified the rumors
which you may have heard regarding these programs All of these
programs immediately tag your computer with a unique ID, after
which EVERY SINGLE FILE you download from ANYWHERE on the
Internet (even places that might not be anyone else's business)
is immediately reported back to the program's source where it is
logged and recorded along with your machine's unique ID. They
also have the opportunity to capture and record your machine's
unique Internet IP address.
This information is then compiled and used to create a detailed
"profile" about who you are based upon the web sites you visit
and the files you have downloaded. Perhaps you don't mind being
watched and tracked as you move around the Internet ... and then
having every file you download logged and cataloged and used to
assemble "your profile". But the idea of this seems extremely
invasive to me, and unless you have carefully read the program's
license you might not be aware that this is going on or that
"you agreed to it" when you accepted the terms of the license!
More than 14 Million people are already using the original
NetZip Download Demon. NetZip knows the exact number, since
every copy of their program "phones home" to report on what
their users are doing! And I'm sure people are downloading Real
Network's ReadDownload and Netscape's SmartDownload like crazy.
A Class Action lawsuit was recently filed against Netscape/AOL
because of this privacy invasion, so perhaps the PC industry
will begin to receive the message that this sort of secret
spying and profiling is not okay with the rest of us, even if it
is buried within a lengthy license agreement. You decide. And,
of course, the next release of my own OptOut spyware detection
and removal utility WILL consider these programs to be
dangerous, and warn its users of their presence in their
systems. But I wanted to be sure that you knew RIGHT AWAY what
was going on, and that I had independently confirmed that this
invasive file download tracking really was occurring.

What Steve Didn't Mention...
Steve Gibson didn't focus on this in the item above, but note that the
preferred/default method for upgrading all Netscape browsers also is via
Netscape Smart Download.
This means *ALL USERS OF NETSCAPE BROWSERS* will end up in the AOL
download-tracking database.
Worse, to use Smart Download, you have to register at the NetCenter site--
- so AOL/Netscape will have your name, email, and other personal info on
file. This means they can (if they choose) associate your downloads with
*you* individually and specifically, and not just with some arbitrary
machine-generated ID.
This is so wrong it's beyond words. Alas, it's also very, very typical of
AOL's abusive approach to end-users; seeing them only as passive targets
for advertising. Sigh.

Simon, Hmm, I'd like to agree with ya but I've sadly never seen DT in
concert....
only the IMages Words Video they made. From the little I've seen of JP
play
he's anything but out in the spot light. He kinda just stands there and
does his thing.
Not too entertaining, maybe a little boring to watch. But like I said
I've only seen a
little live footage so I may be way off base. I don't agree in even
comparing JP to Vai
however -- you're comparing apples to oranges. Vai is the frontman of
his band. He travels
under the name 'Steve Vai'...we go to see him for the most part, he's
supposed to be out in
the spotlight. We go to see DT -- DT goes on tour not JP -- it's a band
effort.
I totally see where you were going and what you meant in your comparison
but I just don't think
it's a hot comparison. But, good reply.
>>>I read an interview with MP, in which he said that Jordan
>>>had been carefull not to mess with the DT blueprint in his

>>>days when the keys competed more-or-less evenly with the
>>>guitars. SFaM's more a throwback to Awake than it was to I&W.
Now this I think is ludicrous. A blueprint? When I listen to SFaM
I don't hear
anything like a formula hiding behind it....FII, yes formula.....but if
there is formula to SFaM, they did a great job in covering it up.
But as far as the keys competing with the guitar, it seems to be heading
that way. We'll
just have to see what they come up with next. But, too me -- though I'm
a guitarist and this might
be biased -- I thought SFaM had a lot of great keys in it, and more than
any other DT album.
