I think you guys are maybe missing the point a little bit... By formula, I'm
pretty sure Mike does not mean a fully worked out detail of what they have to
do, I think he is simply referring to he sort of signature Dream Theater
sound that there is, basically saying taht although Jordan's contributions of
course reflected his style/personality/whatever, he was careful ot to do
anything too radically different from the Dream Theater (Such as playing a
hammond organ through the whole thing or using the LTE sounds, etc.). SFaM
did have a plan in terms of storyline, obviously, but other than that it was
all conceived and written in the studio, so there was no prepared 'blueprint'
    for what happened.

While I'm on the topics of computer recording and MS-bashing, why has
no one recommended that Richie explore a Mac for the project? There's
no imaginary line in the sand -- er, silicon -- at 640 kb, there's no
"Gee, will this sound card and this software work with that plugin and
that CD drive?" worries... I mean, Macs were designed for
    arts-and-crafts, weren't they?

Not even I would stoop so low. -- KorgX3 compares a MacIntosh to a Ferrari with square tires. Sure, it looks nice but won't go anywhere. The Matrox G400 Maxx is good for dual monitors. RAM hog?..... maybe if you're doing animation/digital video :) If you have 200mb+ for audio, should be no problemo. Otherwise, what's on the videocard itself will take care of the smoothness of working with 2 monitors. Same goes for games, but you probably would want a GeForce card for that. G400Maxx is good for 2D stuff.

We've gotten our tix to the San Antonio show from Ticket Master, but I'm no help for y'all up north. This will be fun, haven't seen Queensryche in a general admission show since the Rage for Order tour (yes, I do have a few gray hairs :-)

I heard that word too recently,in one of mike's interviews but i thinkhe meant it in another way.He meant that even though Jordan is in the band,Dt will not sound like LTE or some new band. It's still Dream Theater, hence the blueprint comment. If you look at it that way,you could say that the band has its own blueprint, its own unique sound and identity. Then again,i could be wrong. One needs to read the whole interview to reach a conclusion.

Urk. Well, since there won't be any SE dates on the upcoming leg of the tour, looks like I'll have to do a bit of travelling from Atlanta to see DT. :)

The Philly show is on one of my nights off, so I could see it without missing work (or too much work, anyway). The NYC show, however, will be "special" according to Mike P. (two long sets with an intermission, like the infamous Dream Bill show). I'd have to miss at least a day, probably two, of work. Hmmmmmm..... Any old-timer Ytsejammers like me going to these shows? I'd have to fly up, so I'm also trolling for rides and maybe a place to crash. :)

I'm leaning toward the Roseland show. It'd be cool to be present at a bit of DT history......

15 inch monitors will not cut it. It doesn't matter if you have 4 of them. If that's all you've ever used and your beady little eyes can take it, go for it, but the upgrade to a larger monitor will make you much more productive and will save you a lot of time and stress. Furthermore, while Win98 supports multiple monitors, not all of the Audio apps out there do. It's worth a shot, but you'll still need a minimum 17 inch monitor, and you're best off with at least a 19 inch and maybe a 15 or 17 as the sidekick.

    > Is a dual monitor setup a RAM hog? anybody?

Not really. A system with at least 128 MB or RAM should never see the problem, as long as you've gone into the registry and adjusted the amount of RAM Windows holds aside for itself (if you are at 128MB for instance, Windows automatically holds 32MB of that for no reason, just to make sure it can use it if it needs it. If you set that to 8 MB, or 16MB Win98 will have no trouble pulling memory on an "as needed" basis. This memory is supposedly aside from what windows uses to run the OS itself as it works like a cache and sets itself at a different level depending on what amount of RAM you have... the more you have the more it takes)

    > From: welihozkiy <andy@dust.de> > And then you get into if ya want a single or dual unit (quad isn't worth > mentioning) > -- dual is over kill for what you need. Your RAM

A dual processor machine is a huge waste of money for DAW work. The only reason anyone builds one into their rig is so they can say "I have a dual processor machine."

    > will be good at around 256 but at 512 it will groove. Mainly you're

256 is more than enough. You will never see the difference between 256 and 512 during digital audio work (recording, editing, manipulation etc). 128 is currently what people on most of the DAW lists are recommending. I'm running a pretty hard core pro rig right now and I have never had a burp with a PIII 500 and 128 MB of RAM

    > going to want a fair amount of HD space. > Around 15-30 gigs if you really plan to be recording and editing on the > machine.

More important than that is that it's 2 hard drives... one for apps and one for audio data. Otherwise, plan on spending half of your recording time rebooting your machine. ---- Someone else: > If you want to argue as to when Fates Warning changed from Power Metal to Prog > Metal, it's up to you. Watchtower though is the first UNDENIABLY Prog-Metal > band, in my book at least.

Give us some dates to back that up. Fates went Prog when they got Ray Alder. Listen to Ivory Gate of Dreams. I don't remember anything from Watchtower before 1988.

Most things in Win are ram hogs...don't see why dual monitors should be any different. Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if it was a MAJOR ram hog and also a good excuse for Win to crash...

I'd say that dual+ is overkill for anything less than a server in a 20+ user network. 128 megs of ram wouldn't be a major setback either.

I think this was asked once before, and the consensus was vee-THAL-ee KOO-pree (A as in "father", OO as it "bootleg")

Hi, I'm mostly a lurker here but I noticed someone asked where the website of the RTP (Rush Tablature Project) had gone. I'm the current admin of the mailing-list component of the RTP and our web-site-hosting guy has been doing some crazy stuff like moving and getting a job. He recently said he will soon have the site up at least temporarily at: http://deadbeast.net/rtp/ So give that a shot, I haven't looked at it, dunno if its up yet (plus I think the site is way overdue for an update) but hopefully its there or will be very soon :)

I just logged into CDNow and saw that they have the Special Edition of SMPT:e on there and thought I'd get it (since it was only 23 bucks), but then noticed that it's backordered. Does anybody know what the deal is with this? Are they ever going to get a shipment, or is there somewhere else I can order this?

Actually, I'm not even sure there are any left, are there. Should I just get the regular one?

Oh, and a bit of GREAT news for me: My mother came to visit me on Monday by coming to one of my shows, and she brought me my mail from home while she was there. I dug through the letters and birthday cards (I turned 21 last Wednesday!) and found my DT XMas CD!!! I was so psyched that I went and listened as soon as I got back. Awesome stuff, man; definitely worth the wait in my eyes.

Basically, what everyone's said about Vai is true, (Aside from the spotlight nabbing thing...). Saying Steve Vai tries to steal the spotlight is like saying everyone in DT plays too much. His records are released under the name Steve Vai, his tickets for his shows are labeled Steve Vai, it's all Vai. Listen to Joe Jackson's "Symphony No. 5", Vai's on that disc and you'd barely even know it, (unfortunatly).

About Mike Keneally, he's not really much of a show off, he plays like that because he has to. Why would Steve hire another person to cover certain parts, if he's already got one monster to cover 'em? Oh, and you were only partially right....he plays guitar, keyboards AND sings at the same time. :-) "Nonkertompf", damn that was amazing during his solo spot. (Further proving Vai's non-spotlight-grabbing, he gives band members solo spots, plenty of time to shine.).

Speaking of Vai's touring band, anyone else see Mike Mangini's drum kits on Ebay? The Pearl set used for the Ultra-Zone recordings and the Remo set used on the Fire Garden recording/tour.

Why is that hilarious? They *are* releasing an album in August called "V" That is, of course, around the same time that Symphony X is releasing their next album, which is also called "V" They are also my two most anticipated albums of the year. And if that's not enougb coinicidence, the covers are eerily similar.

It's been mentioned on rec.music.progressive. They do have a new album, and I believe that the "V" is a roman-numeral 5, since it's their 5th studio album. I don't know how soon it'll be out, though. www.spocksbeard.net's news page was last updated 6/3/00.
