You think that's funny, eh? Well, as is said in Scarred, "Well, we're not
    laughing." ;-)

I ran into Nick D'Virgilio last night at a drum and keyboard clinic here in
the Washington, D.C. area. It was an Alesis clinic at Chuck Levin's
Washington Music Center out in Wheaton. Very interesting, very cool,
although much more of a marketing pitch. That's OK, though, because I
bought my first keyboard -- an Alesis -- last week.

Anyway, Nick was demoing the "DM Pro Kit" electronic drumset, which sounded
great. After the clinic, a couple of us (the only SB fans in the audience)
stayed to talk with Nick. He was very personable, of course; it felt like I
was talking to a friend-of-a-friend, not a "rock star." Sure enough,
though, he said they've got a new album coming out in August. It's called
"Five," with a great big roman numeral 5 (V) on the front cover. According
to Nick, it's very progressive... it starts off with a a 27-minute epic!

Nick said that the band's going to be looking for a new label soon. It
sounds like they want something that can do more promotion. He thinks they
easily have a few good radio songs. I never would dream of getting prog
rock on the radio these days. But Nick's got a radio-play background, since
he's recorded with artists like Genesis and Sheryl Crow, so he really wants
to be able to get SB on the radio. "June" was mentioned as a potential
radio track, as were "Skin" and "Day For Night" even. (I'm partial to
"Waste Away" myself, though...) At the same time, though, SB realizes that
prog bands and major labels just don't mix. So it didn't sound like they
were sure of the best way to proceed.

Overall, the clinic and chat were a ton of fun; if they're going to be in
your area, I recommend it. Especially if you're a keyboard player.

Ytsejam News. You heard it here, first.

Nearly from the beginning, Fates Warning was a band that would fit into the progmetal pidgeonhole. Look at "Awaken The Guardian" or "The Spectre Within" -- fantasy/scifi-based lyrics, drastic changes in theme/tempo on the drop of a dime, songs clocking on over 8 minutes in length... In short, everything you could ever want of progmetal albums. In my opinion, this early, Arch-era, Fates sounds more like your stereotypical 'progmetal' than "Parallels" or "Inside Out".

As far as Queensryche being progmetal goes...not really. Their late '80s sound helped define the genre, but they don't exactly meet a lot of the 'qualifications' for membership into progmetal-proper (rarely stray from 4/4 territory, for instance). Queensryche really was (and is) more brainy power metal than progressive metal, like Maiden, Savatage, and many of the other great bands we all know and love (or tolerate, depending on your taste...I like 'em at any rate).

Of course, these judgement calls assume that you buy into the definition of progmetal as something that 'sounds like progmetal' as opposed to the ridiculously vague 'something that progresses' definition. (If that were the case, you could probably argue that every band, aside from the static AC/DC-types of the world, is progressive.)

It's weird. I never thought of them as being Prog myself before I started subscribing to this list. But, I consider them that now. Midcrime, Rage For Order, and Promised Land are all proggy IMO. Sure, they're not quite as technical probably as other prog bands, but the sound is there. -Mike C.

william b henderson <wbhender@cs.millersv.edu> told us that:-

"As far as Queensryche being progmetal goes...not really. As much as I love QR, always have and hopefully always will, they could never now be labelled as "progressive". Should we now instead label them and other bands that have followed their example as REGRESSIVE?? If so are we witnessing the birth of yet another sub-genre known as "reg-rock"? Hehehehehe.... Just a thought!!

I ordered the limited edition from CDNow awhile back. It went on backorder for awhile, then I got a notice saying that the order was cancelled, because they no longer carried that title. So I ordered it from Radiant Records (www.radiantrecords.com), and got it in about 1 week. I don't know if they have any left, however.

I meant spotlight in the metaphorical sense. Visually, yes he's pretty much content to be a guitarist rather than a frontman - you'll never see JP walking around on stage with a 20' inflatable microhone emerging from his trousers a la Dave Lee Roth. But as for standing there doing his thing...Well, he does an awful lot of his thing! In the studio, it's not a major problem; but live, he really starts to grate, as anyone who heard the buchery of THE on tour will confirm.

This was from MP's interview on Metal Sludge. And of course there's a formula behind it. Just as Shania Twain has a formula of coutry-tinged slide guitars, and band singalongs based around dull, mid-paced acoustic strumathons, does DT. DT has heavy guitars and complex time signatures mixed in with the odd heartfelt melody, some keys solos, and arrangements rather than songs per se. I mean, if you break down Awake verbally, then try the same with SFaM, you have to say exactly the same thing!

I think the definitive answer to the all the squabbling is that no matter what brand or kind, a CD will hold approximately twice as much playing time as most bands can fill with interesting music without deploying fillers. ;)

Yer the guys like a living video clip. I always give musicians bonus points for their stage act. As much as I respect players like Holdsworth and them, it just kind of sucks seeing them standing around, looking like they don't want to be there.

Okay, the number of minutes on a CD. Older CD-R's can only hold 74 minutes of audio. Mass produced CD's from the record companies can hold a full 80 minutes, as we have seen with some of Dream Theaters music, nearly using ever second on the disk. Now, if you look at the newer 8, 10, and 12X compatable CD-R disks, you will notice that they have the capacity for 700 megs, rather than the olders 650, and they hole the additional 6 minutes of tunage, that being that there is 80 minutes available. Your burning software will not recognize the extra time, but if you override the space safty feature, you can get the extra 50 megs and 6 minutes from the disk. There are some programs out there that will or should soon have an updates so that you can see the extra space without hassle. Talk to you all later. Joe

<< Ya got to see Vai live to fully understand and comprehend the above.... Can I get an Amen!!! >>

I usually wouldn't support a supporter of my own point, but "amen." :-)

<< I respectfully submit that Metallica's "...And Justice For All", released in 1988, was prog metal. Discuss. >>

Uhm, yeah, I can sorta see that. I think, though, there are two flaws with what you're saying. One, the bass is almost inaudible because James and Lars wrote all of Jason's parts... Which for the most parts are EXACT doubles (Not even an octave lower, but exact doubles) of the guitar parts, which means that the guitars are actually tripled. Second, I think the proper label for this album would be "What prog metal would be like without keyboards," as it does miss that certain ambience that keyboards can establish. However, I don't like this album much, because the production is terrible (Ironic since it's the same guy who did Master, which has the best production of all Metallica discs) and because it's played flat, without any energy at all. Since then James has said he hates playing AJFA live; ok, then why the fuck did you write it? This album, seems to me, a failed experiment.

<< Oh, and you were only partially right....he plays guitar, keyboards AND sings at the same time. :-) "Nonkertompf", damn that was amazing during his solo spot. (Further proving Vai's non-spotlight-grabbing, he gives band members solo spots, plenty of time to shine.). Speaking of Vai's touring band, anyone else see Mike Mangini's drum kits on Ebay? The Pearl set used for the Ultra-Zone recordings and the Remo set used on the Fire Garden recording/tour. >>

Respectfully withdrawn. Yes, he does sing, that multitalented bastard. :-) And he wears this pinstriped suit onstage that is literally totally soaked with sweat at the end of the show... THose guys all give amazing performances. Speaking of Mike Mangini, I have some of his drumsticks! (Signed, even...) When I saw Vai it was on Thanksgiving last year, and during his drum solo Mike played parts of it one-handed while eating a giant turkey drumstick! He definitely gets some credit for that. What do you guys think of Dave Weiner? He had this weird solo where he included little bits of Russian folk dances... SImilar to the way JP includes Tarantella and FotB in his bullshit exercises.... :-) I mean come on, the OiaL solo has some cool parts, but you can't tell me it's not random bullshit (And say that it still adheres to a musical structure; that's not the point).

WTF has happened to this list? I've made some wonderful, life-long friends because I've been on this list, and I've been turned on to some incredible music, also. But let's face it, I joined this list for Dream Theater information. The Ytsejam used to be one-stop shopping. All the news came here first. Now we're like the bastard child. That blows.

Well, here's a message to my fellow New York jammers who haven't had time to search through the 4-point print on the official web site. Tickets for 8/30/00 Roseland go on sale on line tomorrow (through TicketShafter) at 12:00 noon. And the 8/31/00 CPI show has, according to dt.net, been cancelled. No explanation given.

New Yorkers - the Roseland show is a Wednesday night, which blows, but it promises to be one of the best of the tour. So, let's start planning a pre-show/post-show *now*, while we still have a month to do it.

Everyone: Let's get more information flowing here, huh?

Isn't the Roseland show the one where they are playing 2 sets and recording it for a possible live DVD ?

I thought his name looked familiar and visiting his site clinched it. I've been working my way [when I have time] through a compilation entitled Tales of the White Wolf: a group of short stories about Mike Moorcock's Elric character written by other authors, including Pellaz. Do finish that story about the party soon.
