    Hi all

rumours would have us believe the Derek (who's he?)
liked to pork the odd groupie or three. If that's
true, then why isn't he on this list?

    http://www.metal-sludge.com/LongShort.htm

Hardly any mentions of people who play in prog bands
at all, actually - could this be because they spend
    too much time wanking musically...

    stay safe and happy listening

    >Then I discovered DT's IaW and got quite confused. "This >is somewhere between my idea of art metal and that band >called Toto," I thought.

Y'know, it always struck me that Toto were the missing link with DT. Most people tend to refer to them as a driect cross between YES and Metallica, with various bits and pieces mixed in; but I hear a LOT of Toto in DT, particularly on I&W. No bad thi8ng, if anyone's heard the very excellent LIVEFIELDS album.

    >> ...I thought PROG fans were open-minded?

YEah, but what about Ytsejammers?! ;)

    >Derek is also great, and I think where DT was on FII and >the tour, he fit in well. He did have the whole rockstar >thing down, which is funny, because you watch a show >from the Awake tour, and he looks like death just warmed >over.

He was probably just a little bit peeved that they'd gone to the trouble of hireing him, and then making him completely inaudible in the mix. I mean, I really do despair of their sound guy. The 5YIaL version of 6:00 is the only time I've EVER heard Myung mixed to a sensible level, and yet on the same track, the keys just aren't there!

    >>Of course, it could also be argued that Metallica was >>never a progmetal band because they abstained from >>puffy silk pirate shirts. > >and i havent heard a single metallica song about >tungsten.

LOL. Anyone remember how DT were dressed for the TTT vid? How we cringed. I can just see JP in a silk cape, actually

    >Au contraire, age does make a difference. Eleven years >means that when they're fifty he'll be sixty...You don't >want the band to die in pieces. Look at Genesis now.

Ah, hell; I dunno why they don't just hire Rick Wakeman like they probably wantd all along!

    >I think im one of the few people who actually prefer >Dereks version of Acos than any other version with Kev..

No way. The version I heard with KevMo was way inferior. Of course, given the rate at which DT have improved, it probably helped that they'd had 5 years to chew on the thing, plus the added fire of a new member.

Well, I don't know what you think about James, but in my experience, he's a really sweet person. He came out of the venue before the show started here in Ljubljana last week and he approached us fans (we didn't attack him) and said 'You guys want me to sign anything'. He was pretty nice and took pictures with us. All his iniciative and it was obvious that he didn't have much time cause of the soundcheck. And after the show he was really friendly too, answering all our annoying Mullmuzzler questions and took pictures. He stayed as long as we wanted and completely satisfied all the fans with answers. John Petrucci was also extremely friendly. Mike was obviously in a bad mood so we didn't jump at him, but he stick around anyway and took pictures. Jordan was obviously very tired too, so he was short spoken, but nice nonetheless. John Myung was missing. It just goes to show you that they are all genuinely nice people, but they are people and have their moods and moments. We fans have to respect that. But call any of them asshole again and I'll kick your teeth in if we cross path.

    Matej

P.S: Any jammers went to see the show in Krizanke/Ljubljana/ Slovenia? Any knowledge of any kind of recording of the show?

    >> Well, you'd Have to observe how he reacts to the crowd and the band in certain situations. For instance, at the Palace during the concert that was shut down due to the overbooking-- where was he? He heard about it--so he left, while the rest of the band remained on stage out of love for their fans. I allso recall him mouthing off to a member of the audience--Japan '95, aka "Mind Control", and I quote, "Study the language before you speak to me." Sure, the guy in the audience may have been yelling, but that's no excuse to act like that towards your fans. When they played here in Minnesota last, (Feb 11th) James was getting pretty heated with Portnoy because he made a mistake twice during his backup vocals. ::shrug:: maybe it's my opinion, but hey--he's a jerk compared to the rest of the band. <<

You don't work at columbia house, do you? I just got their latest catalogue and they gave DT a little picture box, which was great. They featured Awake, the "challenging 2nd release from art-metal band Dream Theater".

never mind which release it is..."art metal"?

btw people, get your asses on over to columbia house. a couple months ago I got a BMG ad, and I thought "hey, I really should get some more cd's". So I went to see if their web site allows you to select anything from the catalogue for your first selections, not just what's in the little stamp book they send you. It does! but, BMG has a crap web site. But I still wanted to get some free CD's, so I checked out columbia house. they have a good site, decent selection, and if I recall, I should be getting a "buy 1 get 3 free plus we'll paint your house and smack your boss" offer pretty soon. thanks bmg!

    gonna see IM in philly...

I've been to two DT concerts in Brazil. James singing was very nice, not perfect, but i wasn't expecting that.

He will never do the singing from Live at the Markee again, just because THAT is perfect.

I met the guys in the hotel, and they were all very nice, but the kindest was James.

And that's all i have to say.

And as for Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, my favorite moment was in the fifth book, Mostly Harmess, where it says that nothing travels faster than the speed of light with the possible exception of bad news. And that one race of aliens actually tried to make a propulsion system powered by bad news. But the problem was that wherever they went, they were seldom welcome when they got there!

Hey gang. It's been a really, really long time since we've done one of these, so I thought that now's a good time to crank up another one.

A little history: Back in 1995 and 1996, a couple of Ytsejammers organized tape trades for members of the list. People who wished to participate typically sent an e-mail to the organizer, stating whether they were in to progressive rock, metal, or both. The organizer then set up groups of two or three people with similar interests. These two or three people made mix tapes for each other and sent them out.

I personally got turned on to a lot of great bands through these tape trades, most notably Shadow Gallery. (I still remember hearing "Crystalline Dream" for the first time on I-91 in Massachusetts.) Now that my personal CD collection is outgrowing my racks, I want to share all the new stuff I've been discovering with you guys.

Things are, of course, different now. CD Burners, mp3's, and Internet radio stations have made tape swaps far less important. However, I think that there are two very good reasons to run one of these now. First, with all of the methods listed above, chances are good that you're only going to get your hands on stuff you've heard of. It's just not very easy to search for something you don't know the name of. Secondly, and maybe more importantly, is that sense of community we feel when we share things directly with members of the list.

So, without further ado, I'd like to announce...

The Ytsejam Tape Trade 2000 (insert trumpet fanfare here :)

I will start accepting e-mails from those of you that wish to be involved probably in a week or so. Before then, I'd like everyone's help in refining categories. When signing up for the trade, everyone will select a certain amount of categories of music, both for what they can send to people, and what they'd like to receive. In the past, the categories prog and metal sufficed. Now, however, there is so much new stuff, and it's all so compartmentalized, that I want to make sure everyone gets what they're hoping to get. So, here are the categories I have come up with so far. Please help me get these into some logical sense:

    ---

Classic Progressive Rock (King Crimson, ELP, UK, etc...) Neo Prog (Marillion, IQ, Jadis, etc...) Crimsoid Prog (Anekdoten, Dark Aether Project, etc...) Melodic Prog (Spock's Beard, Flower Kings, echolyn, etc...) RIO (Thinking Plague, 5uu, U Totem, etc...) Any prog (a catch-all, "don't-care" generic prog category)

Classic-style Metal (Metallica, Anthrax, Pantera, etc...) Progressive Metal (Shadow Gallery, Magellan, Lemur Voice, etc...) Black Metal (Therion, etc...) Death Metal (Cannibal Corpse, etc...) Any metal (see any prog above)

    ---

I have set up a special e-mail address for the Ytsejam Tape Trade 2000. All e-mail concerning the trade should go to tapetrade@miracle.burningblue.net (let's keep it off the Jam). Please e-mail your suggestions about these categories. I'll finalize them and start accepting e-mail to join the trade hopefully in a week.

    In a sharing mood, -d

<I believe you have mis-quoted James here. I believe he said, "Let me study the language before you speak to me." He was basically implying that he didn't understand Japanese.>

DAmn so Im not the only one that heard that wrong, thats the whole background about my goofy ass signature I had someone corrected me, now Ill keep this one for another 100 jams or so (kidding just looking for the right one)

<I've tried to post this a couple times but it never seemed to go through... I heard/read a couple months back (maybe more) that JP was going to/or did switch from Ibanez to Ernieball guitars....>

]From what I understood Ibanez wasn't giving him enough $$, they wouldn't sell a signature 7 string, and he wasn't happy with them anymore.

Musicman I belive is doing 2 signature guitars, a 6 and a 7 string. I think the prototype has debuted for the 7 string, he was using a red one in europe, if a remember correctly.
