Just wanted to give a little bit of insight. There are many different
Stick configurations. The two most common are 10-string (5 bass
strings and 5 melody strings) and 12-string (6 and 6). The bass
strings are (in Standard Tuning) tuned in fifths, starting at the
middle of the instrument, getting higher in pitch closer to the
player. The melody strings are, like a guitar, tuned in 4ths going
    away from the player.

The action is set up so that you can make a note just by tapping on
the instrument -- plucking, strumming, etc., isn't necessary. This
allows you to make notes with both hands at the same time. It feels
something akin to playing a string piano.

<plug>My band's going into the studio in a couple of weeks, to record
three songs. When we're done, you'll be able to hear my 10-string
Stick on one of them. Stay tuned to http://id.fm for more
    information.</plug>

Yeah, I was a little confused at this too. I actually asked him if it would be DVD -and- VHS, and he said DVD only, so make of that what you will. I think maybe it's a way for the band and the label to put something out for the fans that's more "limited edition" in a way. I mean, Elektra probably wouldn't run off 500,000 copies of the thing. It'd be a special, small run release, hence exclusively on DVD. That's just my guess anyway.

Hey JAMmers, On the last JAM Dave listed his top 5 list for most talented musicians. While I agree with him for the most part, I was quite disappointed to see that he forgot about Tom Petty. I mean how can you overlook an artist rolling joints in a Mad Hatter's outfit, having tea with Alice, and dancing with Mary Jane all while running down a dream. Seriously though, Springsteen, Melencamp, Petty, and the rest of the singer/songwriters actually are very talented in the sense that they write little miniature operas (stories set to music) How many modern storytellers do you know with people walking around re-telling their stories in their heads.(ever get a Stephen Kng short story stuck in you head) Yet singer/songwriters can tell stories. get a point across, or record history while at the same time entertaining shitloads of people, even if most JAMmers disagree. $ & #'s don't lie! NOW I don't really care for any of it myself, most of the music is too simple to the point of being boring. but I do recognise the talent in the respective genres of music (besides isn't being progressive about being open minded) BTW Willie Nelson is without doubt one of the most talented somgwriters in his field for all time, and if anyone cares to check out his biography they'll probably agree.( I saw it on VH1's Legends) but then it could be that I'm from TN. and have been exposed to too much country music:-) Any way I think I'll take a nap now . PEACE! Billy. "It's good to get high and never come down" Tom Petty

Heh. I'm just trying to figure out exactly how sending death threats, in all caps with poor spelling and grammar to boot, to people when you know you'll never have to back up your big words, is more mature than simply pointing out the fact that someone is making up emails that don't exist and blatantly lying about what people have said. I can't figure it out, but oh well, I don't plan to waste much time trying. :)

ROFL! I was kind of skeptical about ever treating myself to that movie in this lifetime, but that seals it. I might have to go fork up $6 to see it this weekend. :) There's nothing like rotten vaudeville comedy to make me lmao. But then, I'm such a bigot, I'd go watch any movie named "I Hate W*ps, D*kes, N*ggers, K*kes, Cr*ckers, Sp*cs, and Jews." .This might be interesting for those who own neither of those videos but it is a let-down for the rest of us. I always fantasized that the ideal 5YIALT DVD would have to include:

-The complete Paris show (3 hours). -The complete unplugged in Rotterdam show (2 hours). -The Ronnie Scott show (1.5 hours?).

I was going to include the Awake PPV show but that show is widely available as a bootleg (though I don't have it), and the TV station would probably ask for royalties. The maximum DVD capacity is 6 hours so the above is not impossible. Come on Mike Portnoy... you know you want to!

To answer the question of what to do in order to maintain speed and accuracy on lead guitar, just take advice from Petrucci himself! Use whatever period of time you have to practice technique and divide it up into segments. You mentioned you'll have about an hour, so what I would do is this...

10 minutes of legato fragments 10 minutes of trill exercises

10 minutes of picking fragments 10 minutes of scale/chromatic exercises (to a metronome)

10 minutes sweep picking fragments 10 minutes string skipping fragments

Right there, you've taken an hour of time and divided it up to focus on the specific groups. You don't have to go in this order.. I often start with just picking exercises as I find them the most simple. Then, when I know my hands are warmed up I'll move onto legato. After legato my hands are sore as hell, so then I move to sweep picking which is delicate.

The important thing is to !FOCUS! on everything you do. Using a half-ass approach will cut your results in half. If you play consistantly with focus for just an hour a day, not only will you keep your chops up, but they will continue to improve.

Just got my copy of the 08.2000 issue of Guitar One: let's review

pg 4-5: 2 page Mesa/Boogie ad. Let's see what bands are represented: Creed, Blink 182, 3d Eye Blind, Bush, Limp Bizkit, Everclear, Korn, Godsmack, 311, Foo Fighters, Eve 6.

Wow, I'm impressed, it's been a while since I've seen such a huge congregation of crap (creed's ok)! What's it say about the mentality of todays' guitar players when you've got to put Everclear in your ad in order to sell records. "Hey everybody, shuck out 3 grand for our amps so you can sound like the 1 riff wonder"

Pg 23 - Top 10 Ozzy Riffs - pretty cool.

    pg 33 - Blues lessons

pg 50 - Electric Blueprint - woah - who's familiar goateed face is it that I see??? Why, it's none other than JP.

For all those who were crying "overkill" when you saw JP's 6 cabs, it turns out the middle 2 are his dry signal, while the outer pairs are for his stereo wet signal. And then there's those 31 different rack mounted...uh...things...how anybody keeps all this stuff straight is beyond me. 8-)b

Then "Silent Lucidity" tab and some good columns in the back.

I just saw the most weirdest thing on tv today on some sort of disney show. for I while I thought it was going to suck because they were playing the usual pop crap. but before i clicked the channel I saw the most extraordinary thing. guess who was playing rhythm guitar for Enrique Englisas band but none other than 80s shred virtuoso GREG HOWE. I wouldn't of believed it if I didn't see it, but it was him, plus I recorded. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
