ok, this argument is getting really really stupid now. this is the last i
will talk about this topic because i agree this list is not for this kind of
    material.
for the record i was not refering to all germans as being nazis, as you
    stretched my words into.
i was just kind of ticked off at the way he felt it necessary to get
offended over something that wasn't supposed to be offensive at all. i'm
done with this discussion now. if you still got issues email me privately.

I do, if memory serves me right (grey hairs are showing up), he was at Texas A&M... I was
from UT ('nuff said there). I unsub'd (all by myself without complaints to the list) when the
Kevin/Derek messages were too much for me. Resub'd recently and this is my first post.

Saw the boys in Austin for Awake and San Antonio for FII (my wife, who prefers country, even
really enjoyed that show), and we're thinking about hitting Dallas this month.

I've enjoyed all the show reviews so far.

Whoo hoo! I think more modern would replace film with theater. My film rant

again these are both subjects that I care about passionately. ah well.
Theater NEVER gets any advertising around here, anymore... except at the

    money with
organized schemes such as BUILDING A BAND OUT OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE NO MUSICAL
EXPERIENCE, AND SEEMINGLY NO LOVE OF MUSIC AT ALL!! >>>>>

OK. I have to interject my thoughts here. First, I must say I TOTALLY
agree with Korgx3 on this topic.

A small intro from me, since I am fairly new. I have been a jammer since
August 1999 and a DT fan since Images and Words. We heard TTT at a bar in
Chicagoland during the break of a Journey/Kansas/Queensryche cover band we
were out to see, and I was hooked.

I am a female (31), who grew up listening to music on the radio. All of my
friends felt ooey gooey about Air Supply, Shawn Cassidy, etc. My brother
was predominantly into Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, etc., which was a bit
much for me at age 10.
My main music was Journey: Escape, Rush: Moving Pictures, Survivor:
Premonition and lots of Kansas. My favorite artist was always Billy Joel,
by far. I love his music. I do play piano and trumpet, but musically I am
not serious at all. Call me a musician or a hack, I don't care. I do those
things for pure fun. LISTENING to music or playing any sport is my "Heart &
    Soul" (pop tune).

I believe I fall into the group you were discussing, Palpatine (from the
beginning of the quote above.) At least in my adolescent days I did. All
of the music mentioned in my previous paragraph was on the radio all of the
    time.

The music business was the same back then as it is today. It's no
different. You are correct when you say looks are pushed, and it's NOT just
in music. It's everywhere (take guys/girls scoping out a possible mate.
For example: I'll admit it, I scoped guys with nice booties. No butt, no
chance. It's shallow, butt true, and I am woman enough to admit it. I
finally married a bass player 7 years ago, who fulfilled my wildest visions
and has a GREAT bootie.) I digress....

For you to say that these "people have no musical experience and no love of
music at all" is unfair. Have you ever heard them sing in an environment
where you can make that call? Probably not. If you told me you went to
school with one of the BSBs and that they failed music, and couldn't carry a
tune in a brown paper bag, then you may have some recourse to your
statement. Let people enjoy whatever it is they enjoy. Some people enjoy
ripping people off. That is why they are thieves. Corny, but you get the
point. My feeling is that there are innumerable types of music out there,
and innumerable types of people. Just because BSB et. al. is not your
choice nor mine for daily listening pleasure, it serves it's purpose to put
a smile on someone's face. As far as integrity in the music industry, good
luck. I see the manufactured tunes (take that statement as you will) of BSB
or the popularity of Latin pop as entertainment. People do ENJOY it. Same
as wrestling, which to you for some reason, is more up front? I don't think
you can hide manufactured music. I don't think that is the point. It still
comes out of the speakers as a song, and people totally dig it. Whatever.
Manufactured music still equals music, just as you stated fake wrestling
still equals wrestling, as far as entertainment value goes. It's a gold
mine for the industry, and it will never change.

Music happens to be my release. I've opened my eyes and ears since Dream
Theater became a common theme in our house. I used to be fairly closed
minded, but I never condemned an entire industry or other people for my
likes and dislikes. I still don't understand the draw to a lot of music
such as SKA, but it is MY taste and MY opinion and MY choice to avoid it.
It does not reflect at all what is "good" or "bad" or "manufactured" music
(or musicianship for that matter). My point being, that if pop radio music
(whether Ms. Spears or BSB or Marc Anthony Martin Estefan) does it for some
people, great. Open your eyes and realize people actually do like the
sounds from all these types of music. Today, a few of my favorite discs are
Pos: One Hour, Conception: Flow, Dali's Dilemma and Yes: The Ladder. ( and
obviously all DT discs, but that is assumed.) All of these are musically
great, but all are distinctly different. As another example, I enjoy some
Dixie Chicks and Celine Dion (both very radio popular), but if it were
because I thought they were hot, my husband should be worrying. I enjoy the
simpler music some days, depending on my mood, and yes, I think all of these
artists have talent. It happens to be talent in the form of music that is
pleasing to my ears. All of the death metal people on this list are
cringing right about now, I am certain. That's fine. I believe everyone
when they speak of Meshuggah and their talent, but I know I have heard it
and it doesn't do it for me. It's not my "thing". No one forces me to
listen to it or buy CD's. There is not some alien force out there making
people in Best Buy or on CDNOW purchase this manufactured music.

On a DT note, all of these arguments are why I think they kick so much ass.
They have a wider audience variety than any band I have ever seen. There
are younger fans, death metal fans, progressive fans, fans like myself that
stumbled onto it by accident, fans that are wonderful musician's, fans that
don't know how to play any instrument. It's awesome.

Korgx3 said it all when he said:<<<<<Music is music. If you refuse to
listen to a piece of music because it
wasn't written by the performer or because the performer is "manufactured,"
that's your loss. It was less than a year ago I felt the same way you do,
and I can't believe what an ignorant bastard I was. Regardless of whether
or not the manufacturer was singled out on Star Search or whatever, he/she
has talent. Maybe not talent up to your pretentious par, but talent
    nonetheless.>>>>>

with my friends about how you can't define or pigeon hole art. I think I
really just wanted an outlet to do some anti-corporate rant and took it.
After all I am the Ytsejam's resident, dirty hippy (or at least I've been
called that a thousand times on irc ;) ). I still don't think I'm saying
quite what you all think I'm saying but whatever. I concede. It's music. It
pisses me the hell off, but it IS music. Always key to remember with me: my
rage is always directed at the people who produce this stuff, not those who
listen to it. Anyway, the rant has ended. Until next time!

Don't you really think it's time that America grew up and restricted gun
sales to the army and police? You're not living in a frontier state now,
guys. Why do you need to have the damn things? We don't need them in

This is such a loaded and off-topic subject that I'm not going to get into
it, except to say one thing: it's quite sloppy brainwork to apply the
experience of one culture to another, when they have completely different
mores and situations. Most Euros think they're superior because of their
anti-gun legislation...well, the most effectively enforced firearms ban
ever was levied against Jews in Germany in the mid 1930s...suffice to say,
the Holocaust and WW2 didn't start here in the US...you may want to
examine your own history and values with a more critical eye.

And I notice you said that our army should still have guns...not
surprising since we always have to bail your Hitler-appeasing asses out in
every war. ;D As a US navyman in WW2 once toasted to a bunch of
Brits..."God save the queen! ... We've done it twice now, it's someone
    else's turn!"

Speaking of Nazis. :P Sheesh. Okay, I'm not going to discuss this so don't
try and get me going. :)

Lots of time and little motivation make Eckie an active poster...

Some limey bloke spewed forth with:
    >How many people out there eat franchised hamburgers and pizzas?

Personally, I eat cooked hamburgers and pizzas. I am not sure that the
franchising process is a suitable replacement for the good old cooking one,
but hey, you Brits are supposed to be smart, so as soon as I find the
George Foreman Franchiser, I am all over it.

    >And how many people out there realize that this stuff
    >is shit?

Hmm, franchised shit? That has a certain ring to it. Any plans for
a shit-tacular franchise-a-thon in a town near me? I am all over it like
    flies on, well, shit.

Class, please turn to page six where someone has written:
    >If you're really old school, you'll remember that Bafu Vai's origins
    >were from inside a broken down middle 19th century neo classical garage;
    >a music critic cyborg designed in collaboration with Mike Portnoy and
    >MIT robotics engineering school drop outs for the sole purpose of making
    >the Ytsejam mailing list entertaining when D-Man's Hootenanny power
    >wanes.

But, oh glassropper, has the D's power ever waned?? Are we not slaves to
power of The Limp Wristed One? As for Bafu, having seen him eat at
    McDonald's,
which, according to those in the know, is a prime franchiser of shit, I would
    have
to say that he is definitely human, although he CAN control his stereo system
    via
steering wheel remote and drive at the same time, a skill on par with
    ingesting excrement and concurrently smiling.

Next we turn to a certain reptilian Jaime:
    >harrumphing at a couple of specific
    >people::

    AAAAAAAH. I have been harrumphed.

Then Coldie splooged out her oral orifice:
    >Naaaaah......I met the Doc and I met you....and I barely survived with
    >my life! ;) Actually there are 3 Jammers who post here who are
    >guaranteed to have their posts archived in my Ytsejam Mailbox, Bafu,
    >Dr. Mosh and Eckie. Posts from these 2 are always razor sharp in their
    >wit. Glad to see all 3 of my favorite posters are back!

Your life? I bet your pizza barely survived Mosh's evil appetite. Always
    good
to be a favorite, too. Thanks Carol. Carol? Carol??

    Then Kez ranted:
    >I long ago came to grips with this very fact, and have even learned to revel
    >in my weirdness. Join me, won't you?

I have joined you in eating Chinese food (I sense a common food motif here.
    Could it
be that 'jammers eat??)...revelling in your weirdness is a bit farther than
    even I
am willing to go, what with G. Gordon Liddy on your payroll...

    Penultimately, some dictionary-impaired dude blabbed:
    >It's also ironic that no one from Black Sabbath
    >died and he did, considering how much shit those guys did ya'd think they'd
    >have died 3 times over by now.

    Ironic? No. Surprising? Yes.

And last, but not...well, yeah, least:
    >KorgX3 is sick of seeing kids kill each other in school.

Are you suggesting that you would rather they kill each other at, say, a
Dream Theater concert in Idaho? I hear those potatoes make good silencers.
