This sounds about right. It's such a dumb situation; why
doesn't he stop being so dumb and just use more than one
keyboard like everyone else?! As far as I can tell, the
Kurzweil he uses is an amazing, flexible machine; but if
the above is all true, then he's being limited by the
technology when he could just get a second 'board and
    solve the problem!
And besides, how many sounds does he WANT? On that
setlist, he's not using a whole lotta sounds! You can
    count them on your hands:
      Main pad
      Piano

It's time to put PMU to bed, methinks.

What the hell is this doing on the jam? I'm all for open discussion, but
this was pages and pages long of off-topic preaching. Cut it out.

And another thing: hey, Skadz, can we get a friendly reminder about
re-posting an entire message to the jam just so the poster can give a
one-line reply? That seems to have gotten out of hand lately.

    thanks,

Are you SERIOUS? I think you don't realize exactly how much he DOES use.
For example, there's strings, several DIFFERENT piano patches, drum
samples (such as in Through Her Eyes), several different rhythm presets
that he made (for his solo), the synth brass patch in Beyond This Life...
In addition, the presets that he has to program in have nothing to do with
the patches - that's the EASY part. But he also has to set key mappings
(some keys do different things on his keyboard, and there are different
zones or splits that he uses), ribbon controller settings, pitch/mod wheel
settings. Basically, the K2500/2600 can do ANYTHING with those settings,
so you have to pretty much set everything exactly the way you want it. It
    takes quite a while.

With this convoluted setup, I can't envisage DT suddenly jumping into an
impromptu jam or cover version any more, like they used to with Derek.
Seems to me like if Jordan doesn't have the entire show planned out from
start to finish, note for note, then it's all going to go horribly wrong!

Man, I've been begging (bitching?) for this for YEARS on the 'Jam. Admittedly, a big reason is because I trade for as many shows as possible on each tour and having twenty bootlegs of the same setlist just doesn't get me going as much as it used to. It used to be that I was thankful for whatever shows I could get, but since probably 75% of the shows that DT plays now are pretty easily available on DAT, MD (grrr), or CD, I'd really like to see some variety.

More importantly, tho', is the fact that everyone knows what's coming beforehand. Even if you aren't on the Internet, you kind of figure out what's going on when they play four or five straight songs from SFAM to start the show. The crowds I saw got really excited for the first couple of songs, then a bit stagnant for much of the middle of SFAM, even Home, since they knew exactly what was going to be played for the next hour or so. I never have been and never will be a fan of doing any album, including concept albums, straight through live.

Owell, I've complained for years and it's never done any good, so why would it now? :)

The show is great, by the way, just too static (imo) to really reflect how good Dream Theater really is...

I don't know about that. The way he had the show set is to change patches with a foot controller that he hit with his left foot (for those of you that don't know how he did it). Each time he hit the pedal, it changed from one preset to the next in the set. I think that if he knew ahead of time what covers or things they MIGHT be doing ("okay, guys, here's the list of potential songs") then he could have several presets in the keyboard itself, instead of in the rack unit, that he could use at the touch of a button. Also, there are TONS of built-in presets in the board, and a lot of them are great for stuff.

I think all he would have to do is set whatever settings he wants in the board with the buttons, and then to go back to the regular show, all he'd have to do is hit the pedal again, which would immediately set it for whatever was next in the program.

Remember, he did Three Minute Warning completely impromptu - I doubt he knew ahead of time what he was going to use there - and it sounds great!

Yes. Mangini's star really shines in a live environment; most of the time he tones down his monster playing on studio CDs. A good thing, otherwise I think he'd be getting more attention than the artist who's purported to be the star of the disc! :)

Mangini's touring with Vai now. If they come anyplace near you, GO SEE 'EM. If you are a drummer, you'll be shocked by Mangini's playing. He frightens ME, and I play keyboards. :)

Ah, but he *did* tell us when we saw him in Atlanta. The second one will be done with the same lineup as the first. Evidently he likes working with those guys. Can't say I blame him.

Guillory, how come you didn't come visit with the rest of the Ytses at the Atlanta show, man? James said you were there, but we never saw ya. :)

Hi everyone, I agree with some of the other members, in that I really hope that tthe band releases a video of the current tour. It would be tragic not to capture such a monumental moment in the band's history on video! (Better yet DVD!) I just finally picked up "Five Years in a Livetime", and for anyone that hasn't, do so as it's wonderful. With this video and the Live in Tokyo video having a lot of behind the scenes type thing, this tour would be great to capture the band on stage, the whole concert! For those of you that haven't visited my site, please do so. The URL is below... I don't know hopw many of you are into other bands like Marillion, IQ, Arena, and Yes (I suspect a few!), but I have sites for them also. The Progressive Waves site has links to all of my sites, as well as hundreds of links to other prog sites.

Ummm don't be so sure. There's a number of us Houston folk who fit that description and are first timers going into the Dallas show this week. It's more common than you think. On the other hand, I don't really care if I hear PMU live.. it's not my fav DT song by any means.

This is certainly not the truth, you should now remember that maybe the whole continent doesn't think like one fool poster to the 'jam ;) (huh) > > Actually, from my experience, it's cuz the Americans are always shoving it > in their face at every opportunity and flaunting OUR superiority. Down with imperialism! > This on the other hand might hold some seeds of truth here, but I wouldn't blame the whole thing on that. Still, I have always wondered what some, note SOME of you "yankees" ;) see in us. We're not that special, as many of you (hi there Trent ;) have noticed. But the same stands with you too...

I guess much of the fraction between the Old and the New World is very old at roots, all the way from those fuckin' wars, they were such big scenes in the play of the mankind that easily won't they be forgotten (can you actually form a sentence like that ?!) Anyway, what I mean is that there has been stuff enuff to cause some bad blood between the continents, let's not let 'em ruin what's still healthy (in the void of a better word). Please, do not judge 330 million people by the words of one ignorant. At least, think about it, and then leave it...This is getting boring, no wait, it has been...from the start !

This is one of the most retarded threads I've ever read. PMU is a classic, it's what really "broke" DT out... why would they stop playing it? It sure beats the crap out of the other crap like FII and SFAM when you hear it next to most of those songs...

I'm not one (an Ancient Jammer) but still that made me burst out laughing so hard that my stomach hurts ;-) Just imagining the situation...

Heheheheheh, well that was a pathetic attempt at winning votes. Especially sending it here on the jam? What the hell was that about? Selling out Republican values? Huh?

    Heheheh, politics.

I urge you as a ytsejam community to spread the votes and write in "D-Man" this Super Tuesday! A candidate with heart, girth, and hootenanny! A man who can get the FAQ done! A candidate with an impeccable taste in music!

Most people know about those "other guys" who aren't worth mentioning in this email. The fact of the matter is none of those guys have any intelligence. They do NOT know what progressive metal is. How can you have any intelligence if you don't like progressive metal? How can you eat your pudding if you don't eat your meat?!

John McCain is a hypocrite (I don't need examples or reasons for labelling him as such, the New Times said he was so it must be true), a pagan diety, and the bane of all existence. To vote for him would be a vote against America! George W. Bush is his little competitive monkey bitch, magically elected by the Republican party to take over this great wonderful indian oppressing country of ours. Surely we do not want a leader who can be beaten in a Jeapordy lightning round by Saddam Hussein?! Alan Keyes isn't worth it, we all know he's just draining the votes from D-Man!

    D-MAN! D-MAN! D-MAN! D-MAN! Ohhhhhhhh say can you seeeeeeeee.....

~Eckie voted for the dude who called the majority whip a "fucking idiot" right in his face, the same dude who won't say what he thinks we want to hear, the guy who was hanging by his testicles in a vietnam prison camp while another was snorting coke in college, and the only candidate from AZ
