    Okay,

Obviously a lot of you guys haven't had much exposure to Kurzweil
    keyboards.

First off, I interviewed Jordan and took pics of his stage setup.

To set the record straight, he actually is using 4 keyboards on stage:

    1 K2600
    1 K2500
    2 racks (K2600 and K2500)

but he only plays on one keyboard the entire show (the K2600). He uses
several of the same keyboards so that 1) there can be instant changes in
his sounds, 2) he can have 512 megs of samples loaded (if he wants), 3)
192 voices of polyphony, 4) and ultimate communication between keyboards
(since they are basically all the same).

Now, about the fact that he has his songs programmed in... I think you
guys think this is set up to MIDI or something. It is not. He controls
the flow by a footswitch. Basically, when he hits the switch, it
automatically switches to the next patch for the given song. It is the
equivalent of a guitarist switching patches with a footpedal. Imagine
Petrucci running back several times during a song and hitting some
buttons really quick before his solo, running back after the solo to
    switch back to rhythm, ...

It is actually something I've seen few keyboard players actually
    discover and use.

There is a little give and take because of this. But it does not bind
the band down in anyway. They could go off into an impromptu jam at any
point. Jordan would simply not press the pedal. Just keep on the same
patch or manually switch to something else he wants. I'm not sure if he
could just hit the pedal and go back to the next part of the song, or he
might have to set up the pattern again (which wouldn't take but a couple
of seconds). But it is not like the minute they start the concert, they
are forced to go with Jordan's keyboard patterns. He can stop and start
the sequence anywhere in the concert.

So, Jordan is not limited, and the band is not limited.

Actually, if you've seen them in concert, you'll notice that the setlist
they play has some improv in it. Just not in a major way.

I have seen Moonspell mentioned a few times in passing on this list and
I was wondering how familiar everyone is with them. Moonspell, along with
Paradise Lost have softened recently. I don't really know what to make of
it. What does everyone think? I personally like ALL Moonspell music, but
One Second by Paradise Lost is not so good. They are very similar and have
similar roots, but I am sort of confused as why bands are changing to this
new (NWOBHM) movement. I haven't hear enough of Q2k to say the same thing
is happening with them, but according to Hear in the Now frontier and
Promised land, they seem to be doing it too.

Dont' forget, too, that Phish Theater carries around their own little
entourauge around with them. I mean, how many people on this list went to
see more than one show? :) There was a guy at the SLC show that sounded
like he'd been to one in AZ, two in CA, the one in Las Vegas, the SLC one,
and was headed to the one in Denver. hehehe.

Not to mention that DT has one of the most dedicated fanbases I've ever
seen. It's amazing what distances some of these people will travel to see
them. :) Like Max who "fucking flew into fucking Boise from fucking Spokane
and made the fucking drive to fucking SLC to see the best fucking band in
the fucking world." :) Shit, I've never heard a guy use a profane adjective
    so much. hehehehe.

So just keep in mind that DT might not be packing a whole bunch of people
from city to city, but rather just packing the same 1000 people that migrate
from show to show. :) Either/or what can they complain, it pays the rent.

The keyboard is not what stores the patches for the show - it's actually his rack-mount unit that changes the patches via MIDI stuff. So (and I'm pretty sure, but not absolutely positive on this) he could punch stuff in by hand, and it wouldn't change a thing. As soon as he hit the pedal again, it would snap back into program order.

When I saw the show in Boston, he was punching things in by hand every now and then (possibly to change tiny little things that he wasn't so happy with).

    > Yes. I thought his technical performance was fine. (And Chopin's > Revolutionary Etude is quite a technical feat!) It was very cold, > though. Little dynamic variation. Stolid tempo with almost no rubato > whatsoever.

The Revolutionary Etude, though, has very little dynamic variation to begin with. The only soft parts in it are the fast runs in the left hand; other than that, it's SUPPOSED to be very militant and hard.

    > And he didn't play an acoustic piano. He played that damn Kurzweil. > (Which probably contributed to the lack of dynamics.) The Kurzeil > piano sound is amazing, but next to those real pianos on the rest of > the CD, it just doesn't cut it.

Personally, I think Kurzweil's piano samples are the most realistic in the world. I've heard tell of a Bosendorfer baby grand sample that, when you hit the keys hard enough, actually makes the bass strings vibrate against each other and buzz because in a real Bosendorfer baby grand they're too close together. If you really want to hear how realistic the Kurzweil and Sweetwater Sound grand piano samples are, head over to http://www.sweetwater.com/sounds/CD_AUDIO_stratus-rsi/02-grand_pianos.mp3 or, if you'd like to hear the other audio demos, check out http://www.sweetwater.com/audio-demos/home.html for other info. I think that you're not giving enough credit to our friend Jordan, and I personally think that his Kurzweil (due to bad engineering on the other pianos) sounds MORE realistic on that CD than do all the others.

    > Which isn't even the issue. The issue was that the one-keyboard setup > limits him and the rest of the band, whether he realizes it or not. > The answer is yes.

I personally don't believe that it does. Just because nobody has SEEN them bust out into a jam doesn't mean they WON'T. That's the real question here - this all spawned out of the question "why won't they change the setlist around" and turned into a debate about whether or not Jordan is limited by his use of two keyboards (there IS a second keyboard that he puts on his rack unit). I think that if he were limited, he would add more keyboards, but he doesn't feel he is and as such feels comfortable playing on just one.

    > ps - besides, it just LOOKS so cool to have a million keyboards up > there. :)

Whatever happened to the "it's all about the sound" thing? Since when does what the music LOOK like get so important?

Besides - I think having a LOT of keyboards is limiting. How can you change the setups on 5 keyboards all at once?

Yup, I was there; it was a great show, it was lots of fun, and there were definitely not nearly as many people there as there were for DT. I was pretty pumped about that. I was on front row again (first one to the venue and in the door, actually), and I read a newspaper during the Q2K stuff. It was pretty brutal and hilarious :) The non-Grungeryche songs were great though, even though Kelly didn't nail a couple of the harmony solos, for which I flipped him off repeatedly. All in all, a really fun show.

It's really an easy transition to make....all you need is one walkman, a cassette with Burning My Soul on it (i'm sure the album version would do, but I'm getting excellent results with a demo, so I'd recommend that), and (read carefully now, this is the key ingredient) two old, tired batteries, still powerful enough to run the damn thing, but not necessarily at the correct speed.

You think DT music is wacky enough the way they intended it to be heard? Wait 'til you hear it at variable speeds! Talk about your time and chord changes, this is some sick shit!

Although I don't have a direct take on the subject, but it brought up some nice discussion about DT's setlist.

Personally I'd really like them to bring back some improvised stuff, hey put in a jam once in a while. I'm not asking for a "3 minute warning" or a Phish setlist, just bring back a little more sponaneity!!! (Especially after a long piece like SFAM, where you obviously can't change too much besides throwing in a solo once in a while - and I could do without the techno-keyboard solo).

Another pet peeve: I really dislike medleys. This is just a mediocre compromise so that there's a piece for everybody.

And finally: I could really do without hearing PMU at a show. With so much great material on their first 3 releases it should be easy to rotate a few things on the setlist on a day to day basis. Of course I might be a little bit frustrated not to hear _my_ favorite song at a show, but at least ther would be a bigger variety of bootlegs...

Get over it, guys! Look, DT pretty much HAS to play PMU every show. Period. Why, you ask? Simple - 3/4 of the audience wants to hear it, and it's the only song of theirs that ever got significant airplay.

When you go see Iron Maiden, they play "2 Minutes to Midnight". When you go to see Queensryche, they play either "Eyes of a Stranger" or "Silent Lucidity" - both, usually. Why? Because fans just paid 25-35 dollars, and they expect to hear that song.

I don't see what everybody's problem is with it, anyway - it's one of my favorite DT songs. I'd be disappointed if they DIDN'T play it every time I saw them.

I still don't understand "Peruvian Skies", though. :)

Yeah, I'd like to see DT be more spontaneous, too. Maybe James could masterbate on stage or JP could light Mike's kit on fire while they were playing. But I hear they've thrown in a little spontanaity on this tour. There have been a couple of reports stating that Myung let out a small, scentless fart during Fatal Tragedy in Cleveland.

Listen Sprout. Green Giant's vegetable medley is a hell of alot better than having straight broccoli (I'm a choppin' broccoli... chopping broccoli...). If I so much as catch you picking out the KoRn I'm going to... Don't you put your fork on my plate! I don't like that shit! Yo ho ho... Gentle Giant...

When preparing your Progmetal Marinade, you should always select only the choicest ingredients. Failure to do so will definitely cause complaints from many of your more finicky guests. To prepare, take two tablespoons of pomposity and blend that with 1 cup of fine hair metal. Stir in 5 cups of Berklee Brand [tm] talent and 1/2 teaspoon of 5/12 notes. Place in oven preheated to 400 degrees F. Be sure to alternate the temperature from 400 deg. to 450, 500, 375, and back repeatedly once every minute. Bake for 21 minutes, 12 seconds. Remove from oven and cover. Refrigerate for 5/8 to 3/4 of a day. Remove from refrigerator, add band, and serve. Makes several large helpings although most people won't even sample a bite before determining whether they enjoy it or not. Note: be sure to add your own unique garnishes or else you will undoubtedly be accused of using a "cloned" recipe. -- KorgX3 offers you a heaping helping of gnawed-off cuticles. I have the solution... since half of you like to complain about the setlist, and nitpick, and the other half likes to complain about DT not playing your city... I propose we put it all in one package. DT will play bigger places, just not as many places, so that way you lil bitches that like to whine about the setlist will get to whine about them not playing your city instead... Your collective wails will hopefully will Pull You Under.

Well, luckily, Dream Theater "silver" boots don't bring really much at all as far as monetary resale value. There was a time there when (stupid) people would spend $50, $75, even $100 for a Mike Bahr original, but that's totally gone now. Just trade for the CD-R and have the music...

I think they just like playing it! They've been doing it at all the shows for this tour, and they even played it a couple times at a couple of the Christmas shows. If they have fun, why not.

    Hey -

I got the following info from UACM, and I hadn't seen it posted yet. Now we know when the Orlando gig will be cybercast on hob.com:

"There will be a Dream Theater pay-per-view broadcast (in Windows Media format) on House Of Blues on Sunday, April 9th, 2000 at 6 pm PST / 9 pm EST."

    I verified this on http://www.hob.com/live/

There was some talk recently on the Jam about how it would be possible to get a videotape of the cybercast. I may be way out in left field here because I don't really understand the technology involved, but what if a Jammer with WebTV were to tape it? I would assume that the internet connection for WebTV is done via cable wires, so there would be a good connection speed. Then, maybe they could just maximize the Windows Media window and simply record on the VCR. Would this work?? Just a thought anyway. Somehow, we GOTTA get this on video, or at the very least audio. Maybe someone can get a recording like the one Bahrman got for Streams Of Consciousness and someone can burn it onto CD.

If you read my post, you would notice that I actually asked whether or not punching in a program by hand effects the order of the pedal increment. so it doesn't. Thank you. It's not difficult to grasp, it's just not common knowledge.

And it STILL doesn't mean it adds to his flexibility.

Yup. On the Awake tour in Baltimore, I think that was the 5th night of the tour, Derek said that he had never met Kevin, but he left a disk for Derek with all of the sounds used on Awake. he also said that he learned all the parts by ear, and he had learned only the songs in the setlist at that point.

Poor Derek! He had just played 2 hours of music that he probably learned in a matter of weeks with minimal rehearsal, and all people see fit to ask him is, "Have you ever met Kevin Moore?"
