How much are Australian bands liked in the US.
I have a band and I wish for the US to like it but it is so hard to get =
anywhere in Australia, so if anyone can help a new young band from =
Australia I can send a Demo CD to you, but only if you at genuinely =
interested. We recorded in the same studio as the Living End (new Aussie =
band) So feel free to e-mail me at bwatt@gotafe.vic.edu.au=20

It sounds nice over here! :) Without the C# it sounds quite bland.=20

I often wonder what makes a chord "tick". I tried to make some research into=
this a few months ago but it's on hold now because of other commitments.=
[Basically I had this idea to classify chords algorithmically using some=
sort of weighted function of a) "consonance" (in the "classical western"=
     sense) b) overlap/reinforcement/dissonance of actual/implied root partials=
     c) implied or real difference/sum frequencies ... I envisioned some sort of=
heuristic/genetic development cycle where my own ears would be in the=
feedback loop and I would optimize the function to grade chords somewhat=
according to my taste. I suppose this is "rule-based theory with a=
vengeance", with a theory like "it is true, that for this one biased=
     listener, five note chords "a1 a2 a3 a4 a5" for which a function F(a1, a2,=
     a3, a4, a5, x1, x2, x3, ... xn) evaluates to 'more', sound nicer than=
chords for which F evaluates to 'less'." But anyway I found out quickly=
that even this type of focused attack on a very limited and narrowly=
defined problem ("find some dissonant chords that Jens will like")=
generates unmusical rubbish. :) Maybe I need fresh insights.] I'm more=
inclined toward the old-fashined way of making weird chords, for now..=20

Hendrix was one of the first to experiment with things like feedback, whammy
bar, and guitar burning, and his influence is still being felt. Sure, if he
hadn't have died young, he would probably have been less influential. And if
he hadn't played guitar in the first place, he would have been even LESS
influential. See where I'm going? WHY he was influental is irrelevant, the
fact is, he WAS the most influential guitarist ever. And, just for the
record, I'm not a huge fan, either.

my inspiration for the above post:
Sure, Jimi was good in his time. But the influence that
he's built up is largely a result of his premature death
and high profile. Otherwise he'd have ben eclipsed longago.

Could be, or he might just have been the old man that now lives in the

does reincarnation skip a generation. Did they skip a generation.
Victoria dies in 1928 correct. The man in the video form the show appears
to be in his mid 30's correct? Whats goin on. Do the spirits just hang

    Morning.

Does anyone have "The Chill of Winter" boot, recorded on
November 11, 1999 in the Netherlands? If so, what's it like? Good
quality? I saw it in a (cool) cd store here in Helsinki, but wanted to
know a bit more about it before thinking of purchasing it.

Is $50 a lot for a double cd? I've been happy to pay that for the
couple of boots (small club adventure, nighttown nostalgia...) I
have. "The chill of winter" has a couple of tracks recorded at Mike's
    drum clinic as well.

Only a week to go.... *humming happily*

All I can say is buy this CD. This is one of the better CD's to come out
in a while. It's chockful o' skilled and tasteful playing that never
sacrifices from the song, as is frequently the case on SfaM. The best
thing about the music is that is breathes well-- it has a great organic
and jammy feel, yet the playing is very focused. The music is not as
complex as DT, but it rocks and has a nice feel. Ty Tabor kicks major
ass as do Derek, Myung and Morgenstein.

Ice Cycles is by far the best DT side project, though haven't heard
Transatlantic, yet, but this CD is worthy of a higher status than a DT
sideproject. I'd actually put this in regular rotation in my CD player.
My only complaint is that I wish Derek and Myung were a little higher in
the mix, but they're still audible, which isn't normally the case with
    Myung and DT.

I think it is definately worth considering as best ROCK guitarist from a general point of view, although as most people know it is silly to try and do this sort of thing. However if you were to set up a list of criteria that covered all the different things that one would need to be the best, Hendrix would definately be up there. Its silly to compare shredders to Hendrix because Paco De Lucia, Django Reinhardt and Al Di Meola could kick most of these shredders asses, but who cares? As for Page- I think Led Zeppelin as a whole were a very influential band. I dont think you could say Page had better chops. Most people would have little trouble playing his stuff. Few can do what Jimi did though. You try taking as much acid as he did then getting up there, singing, playing guitar with your teeth etc. with as much ease as he did. And no way could Page match that one man band thing and the piano style (but electrifying) improvisations that Jimi could.

    > Sure, Jimi was good in his time. But the influence that > he's built up is largely a result of his premature death > and high profile. Otherwise he'd have ben eclipsed long > ago.

I replied to this statement only a few weeks ago. The people who saw him and played with him, which includes a wide range of players (John McLaughlin to Eric Clapton and of course the guys in the Experience), said at the time and still say that he was an amazing player.

    > Not to mention that Malmsteen is a huge Hendrix fan and always lists him as a > musical influence.... Just food for thought. > Ultraking

And thats saying something seeing as though Malmsteen pretty much bags the shit out of anyone who was born after 1900.

Actually, just for the record, whilst he may have been rabidly anti-semitic (as about 90% of Europeans WERE at the time, whatever the post-holocaust pretence otherwise) Wagner was (as I remember) very aristocratic; and would probably have looked down upon the Nazis as much as Hindenburg did. But then, he died decades before Nazism was invented. SO far off topic...

Well...Yeah, you are, really. For a start, by "stable" you seem to imply in the sense of "permanent". Umm...Derek played on two albums to Jordan's one, and innumerably more shows than Jordan has done with DT. I'd say that all concerned considered him a "stable" member when FII came out. So that idea's not really true. Unless - as you imply by the following sentence, heaping praise on Jordan - you mean stable as a euphemism for "good", in which case what you're really doing is saying "I don't want a flame war, but if we had one, this is which side I'm on". crap. Unless

    >"all-encompassing" TtT. Maybe with this new

TTT isn't really a difinive DT song, because there's no guitar solo. In fact, it's probably just about the only DT song without one, that and Metropolis!

I laugh my ass off at people who praise this shit. :) "I bet you couldn't drop acid and play like that!" Oooh, that's something to be proud of. "He lit his guitar on fire!" Well, I just lit a $5 bill on fire. I guess that automatically puts me up on the level with financial geniuses like Alan Greenspan. "He played his guitar with his teeth." Well, I'm sure one of these days someone with strum the guitar with their erect penis and out-do him. But if it take those things for someone to be a great guitar player in your opinion, more power to you. -- KorgX3 forgot skill and technique do not a good guitar player make. Dude, that song kicks ass. My favorite two tracks off that album are Adagio in C Minor and Tribute. Waltz in 7/8 is pretty cool, too.

    Yowza!

Anyone bought the Fates Warning Dynamo DVD yet? I've only found us encoded ones so I haven't bothered. Is the quality good, what are the songs etc...?

BTW, was Wagner really "a nazi"? Yes, among some ppl he's popularly regarded as that, but much has todo with what his widow did. Just the fact that he had Nitschean ideals and nationalist views don't make him "a nazi", just because the nazi scum proclaimed his music "right" and Medelssohn "wrong".

That he was an asshole in many ways, and contributed considerably to music history, even though his 2nd acts always puts me to sleep, many will agree.

And the pointless debate musician vs guitarist - let me add that IMO Hendrix was more of a musician than most guitarists. He composed, he sang, he played the guitar, he produced, he toured, he improvised, he performed, he entertained. If that's not a musician's job then what is? Why is it so hard to see that being proficient on your instrument of choice has nothing or little to do with what you do contribute to culture as a musician in broader terms? With enough practice I can do harmonic minor scales up and down my bass in 2 secs, but what does that have to do with music?

Sure, Hendrix had and was a product of his influences, ranging from the blues Kings, Muddy and the boys, to the contemporary scene (Blackmore's 1963 solo on Shake With Me, by The Outlaws or whoever it was, did inspire him a lot, for instance) but he advanced the style so much more than someone who learned all the Eddie van Halen tricks, got a poofy haircut and strolled down Sunset in the 80's.

hehehehe. Yanni-plugger. :) What I find amusing is how Yanni is said to have no theory education yet the titles of his songs on Tribute have those names. :) If he didn't know theory, how would he know he was playing in C Minor or 7/8? heheheh.

Oops, I better be quiet before the theory snobs (read: hypocrites) suddenly find a reason to start appreciating Yanni's stuff. :) "What? He DOES know theory? Well, I guess it's OK for me to like him then..." -- KorgX3 loves to pick on the theory kids. NP: Celine Dion - Beauty and the Beast.mp3 (Hey, fuck off!)
