Just wondering if someone actually did know what Mike Bahr was up to
these days? I eventually got every cd I ordered (not necessarily from
him though), and just wondered where the guy was these days. I miss his
excuses every few weeks. Later, Kevin.

    Hi, folks:

The latest Artist Shop newsletter is out an you'll find it in its entirety at <http://www.artist-shop.com/news.htm>. Here's some DT related excerpts that might interest some of you.

We have some very special releases coming up soon from Spock's Beards's Radiant Records <http://www.artist-shop.com/radiant>!

Coming at the end of March, Transatlantic/SMPT:e and SMPT:e Limited Special Edition. Neal Morse (Spock's Beard) has teamed up and recorded an album with Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater), Roine Stolt (Flower Kings) and Pete Trewavas (Marillion). The result is an incredible album that is sure to excite not only the fans of all their repective bands, but prog fans in general! The albums starts with a 30 minute epic in six movements called "All of the Above," destined to be a prog classic! Also included is a shorter track called "Mystery Train," a re-worked 16-minute track of Roine's called "My New World," a song of Neal's "We All Need Some Light," and a 17 minute cover of a Procol Harum song called "In Held Twas in I."

The Transatlantic Limited Edition contains an extra CD with: My New World (Neal's scratch vocal and alternate lyrics). We All Need Some Light (Roine's vocal). Honky Tonk Women Oh Darlin' My Cruel World (Roine's original demo version). It also contains CD-rom footage of the band in the studio and a special 40 page digi-book.

Then coming in April Spock's Beard/Don't Try This at Home. Don't Try This at Home is a new live album from Spock's Beard recorded in Tilburg, Germany, during their Day for Night tour in 1999. Performances include Day for Night, Mouth of Madness, Skin, Gibberish, June and the twenty minute epic The Healing Colors of Sound.

For Tony Levin fans, on our Papabear Records page <http://www.artist-shop.com/papabear> we're proud to announce a new release soon to be available! Bruford Levin Upper Extremities/BLUE Nights - Having recorded the Bruford Levin Upper Extremities CD, the band toured Japan and the U.S. recording all their shows. As you would expect from these musicians, the live shows featured not only compositions from the album, extended for live play, but wild improvs, jams that turned into pieces, and compositions that turned into jams. Far too many good pieces to squeeze into one CD, so it had to be a double. If that's not enough, there's a bonus track - a remix by engineer SplatterCell using elements of the live playing in an unusual juxtaposition with techno remixing - perfect for this band. The CD booklet contains Tony Levin's web road diaries (and photos) from the tour, as well as some audience photos.

The Musicians Bill Bruford is a longtime member of King Crimson and has been a member of the influential groups Yes and ABWH. Bill also tours and records with his own group, Earthworks. On BLUE Nights you hear Bill at his wildest and most expressive. The CD starts, as did the live shows, with Bill playing alone on stage. There are a few other drum solos, some improvised pieces where he shines, and a couple of Bill's compositions from the earlier BLUE CD.

Tony Levin plays all his basses on this CD: the Chapman Stick, NS Electric Upright with and without a bow, and the Music Man bass. There's some featured Stick playing, a bowed bass solo intro and some featured wierdness from the Funk Fingers (with ring modulation!).

David Torn is well known for his own albums and soundtracks, plays guitars - but that doesn't describe much of the unique element he brings to this music. Unearthly loops, electrou oud, bouzouki...things like that give you a better idea of how he sounds in the group. Also here is one of David's better known compositions, 3 Minutes of Pure Entertainment, from his classic Cloud About Mercury album. That release had Bruford and Levin on it which led to the group doing 3 Minutes... as an encore piece (it lasts closer to 9 minutes now!).

Chris Botti on trumpet provides the lead voice for the group. His own releases on the Verve Forcast label are more jazz oriented than the playing with BLUE. Here Chris gets pretty wild with the other players, but at many times pulls things together with a great melodic sense and sparse playing. Some of the tracks feature duo sections with Chris and guitar which weren't on the studio CD, but developed into audience-moving episodes as the tour progressed.

Now let's get to import news! Starting with imports that are soon to be released which you'll find at <http://www.artist-shop.com/catalog/imports/preorder.htm>:

Scene 2, as a whole, is one of their greatest efforts, not only Strange Deja Vu... I was listening to it the other day and wondering: "How the hell can these guys come up with such great stuff?"...

    >Both the mp3s i got sound really good and definately interesting and different.....

Yeah, both of them sound really good, especially Until We Say Goodbye... I don't think it's sort of a "bluesier" Always With Me... like, someone said, but I liked it a lot, and as Korg said, it'll be kinda interesting to see him doing new stuff (he kinda moved into a new direction with Crystal Planet, IMO, but didn't really go that far from his sound)...

hahaha. I agree. I've been preaching about the inefficiencies (among MANY other things) of SUV's (Sport Utility Vehicles. Yeah, your Jimmy) and pickups for years. Still, on the daily commute to work, I see the same people driving their pickups, SUV's, what have you the same distance or better than I do and they think they have the right to complain about gas prices. hehehe. Makes me glad I drive a Civic. :)

heheh. I don't know how it is in other parts of the country, but here in Idaho there's some sort of strange supernatural phenomenon that your penis will actually lengthen dependant on the overall tonnage of the vehicle you drive. Therefore, the SUV/pickup to economy car ratio is pretty damn close to 1:1. :P

So, in closing. If you REALLY want to bring gas prices down... Nuke Idaho.... please. -- KorgX3 thinks SUV's are nothing more than evil road hazards. NP: Mullmuzzler - Sacrifice.mp3

Yeah, no kidding. Last time a supposed "gas out" was staged, the prices went up. They do not have a good history up to now. If this works, gas prices will either stay the same or go up. And comparatively, me and my fellow Americans on this list have nothing to complain about since other countries pay more than we do.

Face facts, Wagner was a Nazi supporter (even if he wasn't an official Nazi), which makes him someone I would not want to meet. However, he made great music, and he is someone I would like to hear.

Wow, a mention of Steely Dan. So speaking of Steely Dan, are there any Steely Dan fans out there that have given their new disc a good listen? Any reviews? I listened once, but not enough exposure to give an informed review...but, it seems that Becker has taken on most of the guitar duties. Maybe not the best decision. Not quite up to par with the hired guns used in the past.

I was going through some old stuff on Guitar World online, and there was this article about LTE 1 there... And it says in the article that John had recorded a version of "Flight of the Bumblebee" for an album which was being put together by Steve Morse, supposedly called "The Guitar Summit"... Can anyone enlighten me on this? I searched in the website, but there's no mention of it whatsoever, only of that Guitar Battle cd... I appreciate the help...

Hmmm . . . do we really want to get into this?

I have read tons of books about reincarnation over the past 15 years or so, and the general consensus is that souls can reincarnate whenever they want to - anywhere from a few hours after "death" until many thousands of years later. Most of us wait until the conditions are right to reconnect with people we had known in previous lifetimes, in order to complete a lesson, or to resolve a conflict already started. That is, groups of souls tend to "travel" together through time.

Of course, none of this can really be true, since it can't be scientifically proven, right? ;^)

Larry (formerly Claude, a stablemaster in 1700's France; Joe, an itinerant black man in 1920's Chicago; also a gardener in a 1600's nunnery who had an affair with one of the nuns; a French nobleman; a soldier killed in the Civil War, etc.) Damn, I wonder if I can fit all that on my resume'?

I just dont understand all the hostility on this list. So many holier-than-thous and pseudo intellectuals who have to parade their knowledge around in an arrogant manner. I dont mean to be critical, but if I wanted to hear arguments I could go visit my family. Lets keep the jam fun, where everyone can enjoy it. Just my opinion. Thanks again (and let the flames on me begin, I'm sure) Ultraking

Yeah, but at least the theory wars (We'll just refer to it as the "incident" and never speak of it again) seem to have slowed down! Now that (in my opinion once again) was boring! Later, Ultraking

I would like to know if anybody on here has any really good Rush bootlegs. I don't have anything to trade, but I will give you the cdrs and you could burn it for me. Oh, and my opinion of the Dallas show. I think it was awesome. My friend recorded it and it sounds really good what he has, but he didn't get it until Home, and then the rest of the show. It was a minidisc and the battery fell out before he could save it. What we have sounds great. And they are playing the Austin Powers song when the video is running with Dr. Evil. Then they did Twin Peaks. I liked what they did with Pull Me Under, it sound awesome. They played a fortune in lies a little slow. I was pissed off that I didn't get Portnoy's autograph, and James LaBrie's. I did get the rest of them on a drum head, but I wanted the whole band. My friend got Portnoy's but it was just a scribbled line, he had a beer in his left hand, and one in his pocket when he signed his tour book. I was wondering if anynody has a suggestion for a name for a prog band. My friends and I are trying to find a name. Right now our name is Reflections of Reality. Talk to you all later.

I was looking through the DT discography today when I discovered that I had NEVER heard When Dream and Day Unite. I felt like the worlds biggest moron! I ran right down to Manifest Disks and Tapes and bought it. Truly interesting. At the risk of being flamed into a coffin, it should be called when Cool and Crap Unite. Some of the songs (Mainly the instrumentals of course!) kick ass, for Instance YtseJam (who woulda thunk it), while some (Status Seeker for instance) are horrible. Its just really interesting to hear one of your favorite bands in its infancy. I guess we're all glad that they ditched Charlie Dominici, cause he really sucked (in my opinion). Anybody know of an 80's band named TNT? Early DT reminds me a LOT of TNT. What do some of you other jammers think of When Dream and Day Unite? Was this the first time you heard DT on this album? Or were you like me and maybe heard Images and Words first (or PMU on the radio) and then went retroactive?!?!?! Just really curious. Its something to talk about anyway.... Have a great week (and let the flames begin) Ultraking

You're not the only one saying that, many have mixed feelings about this CD, and honestly, even if I don't think so, I can very well understand that. I think (like you said) the most that keeps people from liking it much is the vocalist. Eventhou' I'm very critical about vocals (I *hate* cookie monsters ;) I actually got past them, and now I think they're listenable, but God, did I ever the first time !!! ;)

I have a funny history with this CD. It wasn't the first, the second, or even the third from OFB that I heard. I got I&W, Awake and FII before WDADU, and even the production terrified me at first, I instantly fell in love with the composition. The songs (almost every one of them) are brilliant ! Blistering ! Amazing ! And in a while, I started to get into the sound, and now even think that Myong should get, well not the whole sound of it, but a part of that sound back. It was sheer power, very aggressive, very cool. Others I don't mind, they don't disturb my listening, but neither would I want to hear them nowadays also (like they would use 'em anyway...:). But all in all, a very nice CD, and certainly a great debut album.

I've always thought Urethral Dialysis to be a good name. No offense, but "Reflections of Reality" sounds too cliche. heheheh. Break the mold, pick a name for the shock value alone. :) More people will be attracted to it. hehehehe. Something like Schoolyard Massacre. Make sure you're all wearing trenchcoats in the band photos, of course. So what if it offends people? That's what sells! -- KorgX3 thinks making light of the dead is the only way to go.
