I love that line from PCU: "How 'bout this one: EVERYBODY GETS LAID.
'Tonight at the pit: EVERYBODY GETS LAID.'" That's SUCH a cool band name.

Well, IMO Becker does well. Some songs aren't really up to par, and I
don't really like the sax solo on West Of Hollywood. It's a killer
groove, and good chord sequence, but in comparison to Wayne Shorter on
Aja? No way! The lyrics, however, are excellent. But Becker plays well,
saw em on Letterman as well, a solid performance.

A Swedish guitarist, Jojje Wadenius, who played on their 95 tour, was
there 1-2 years ago to add some guitar parts. Becker/fagen were sitting
there moving snare beats in ProTools, to find out where exactly the
maximum maximum delay and groove would be. I don't think Wadenius played
anything. Another great thing they mentioned in an interview on CDNow:
When they started the album they noticed some construction work starting
to happen across the street from the studio. Late this year, still
overdubbing, they noticed there was a 40 store apartment block there,
    people had already moved in...

    Do check out www.steelydan.com!

Walter Becker's letters to mayor Giuliani, and to a manufacturer of a
vintage guitar calendar, are great fun!

My first band was Gravefuckers. Just before one of the first gigs we needed a name, and figured that Gravefuckers was the best one. We then went on to play bad Yngwie/Purple-metal to Nirvana crowds at the local youth hangout, total success as you can imagine.

Needless to say I've matured a lot since then. My latest band is Schleimhaut und Muskulatur.

WDADU was the LAST DT cd I bought before SFAM, and the first time I heard it I thought it was basically an above-average 80's shredfest. (in fact I've got a pretty embarrasing review of it up on amazon.com that says just that =^). After I heard SFAM, I went back and listened to it, though, and heard it in a whole new way. It has a very similar feel to SFAM, without sounding very similar, if that makes any sense at all. IMO it's right up there with everything else they've ever released. I even like Charlie Dominicci and John Myung's 'farting' bass tone. I was pissed that they only played an excerpt of OAMOT, because that's one of those songs that progresses in an odd way, and you have to listen to the whole thing, IMHO.

    -Fran/Banjoman

I have a funny history with this CD. It wasn't the first, the second, or even the third from OFB that I heard. I got I&W, Awake and FII before WDADU, and even the production terrified me at first, I instantly fell in love with the composition. The songs (almost every one of them) are brilliant ! Blistering ! Amazing ! And in a while, I started to get into the sound, and now even think that Myong should get, well not the whole sound of it, but a part of that sound back. It was sheer power, very aggressive, very cool. Others I don't mind, they don't disturb my listening, but neither would I want to hear them nowadays also (like they would use 'em anyway...:). But all in all, a very nice CD, and certainly a great debut album. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

OK, some advice on band names. First, it depends what sort of music you're going to be playing. If it is metal, then a name like Iron Mallet or something like that might work. If you're a little more hardcore, then something like Speed Razor could do.

If you're heading towards more death/black metal territory, there are a couple of routes to take. First, you could project that tough, evil side with a name like Corpse Raper or (my personal favorite) Impaled Baby. Or you could adopt the new trend in death metal, which is to go for the "grossout" name (Anal Blast and Vomit Snack, to use two actual band names as an example). So you could them for something like Anal Vomit. Or another good idea, Anal Gangbang 5.

Of course, if you're going to be a prog band, you have to come up with something a little more "outside". Scientific terms are always good, or phrases from foreign books or films (these are especially good since most of your US audience will have no idea if you spelled them right or not). Also, you can always take a band name an append an "X" after it, like Impaled Baby-X. The "X" lets everyone know that you're progressive. Hopefully these ideas have helped you.

Now, the mention of "Anal Gangbang 5" leads me to a fun activity for all (and yes, I've done this a few times. No, not anal gangbangs, you smartasses! Keep reading). The next time you're at your local video store (one that has a large selection of porn), head on into the "adult" section and start doing improvisational comedy. Like, if you spot a copy of that "Anal Gangbang 5" video, you can remark "Hmm, I'd rent this, but I haven't seen the first four, so I'm sure I'll be confused by all the intricate plot twists." This works better if you have someone with you, as talking to yourself really won't make you stand out from the rest of the folks in that part of the store. I gave you a joke to get started, but if you're even remotely creative, you should have no trouble coming up with more material. After all, with the dopey titles on porno tape boxes, the material practically writes itself! Remember, messing with people's minds is fun!

    Hello everyone,

Well, I finally found out what hell was really like this past Friday. I = was dragged to a Martina McBride concert at the Mullins Center up in = Amherst, Massachusetts. For those of you not familiar with her, she is a = country music singer. While I consider myself open to all kinds of music, = the one exception I make is country. I HATE country music. I had to play = every DT CD that I own (Which is every one, of course) the following day = just to get that shit out of my head. The horrible image of the concert = will be forever be burned in my memory.

However, I had ample time to take in the architectural structure of the = venue, and started thinking to myself, 'why doesn't DT play at a venue = like this?' I have been to 6 DT concerts in my day, 3 at Toad's in New = Haven, 2 at the Strand in Providence and 1 at the Webster in Hartford. = The one thing I get tired of at these places is the standing up for 6 = hours (including he time waiting in line). For those of you who don't = know, the Mullins Center is a beatiful arena comparable to the size of a = small -market civic center. This concert was far from sold-out , and I = was able to sit down, and nobody was that far away from the stage. I = would say about 3000 people attended the show. Anyway, my point is, I see = no reason why DT can't play in bigger places. While I do enjoy the = intimacy of smaller venues, I tire of the constant pushing and shoving = and the STANDING. (Did I mention the standing?) I certainly think DT = are at the point where they could draw enough of a crowd to support that.

Thoughts? Opinions? Points of clarification? Let me know what ya think!

When I first got WDADU (after I had gotten all DT cds except FII) I didn't really like it. Of course Ytse Jam was awesome, but the rest of the songs were just kind of annoying. I laughed at Charlie's voice. I thought a lot of the lyrics were kinda dumb too. Just a couple of months ago I started listening to it again and now I love it. It really grew on me. I have gotten past Charlie's vocals and concentrate on the awesome music going on behind him. I don't think there is one song on that album that I would say I don't like. Don't give up on it yet. Listen to it a few times and you will start to like it more. The same thing happened with SFAM. I didn't think it was that great the first time I listened to it, but now I think it is the greatest cd ever.

    >Some of the songs (Mainly the instrumentals of course!) kick ass,

IMO all of the songs in WDADU kick ass, the only problem is Charles's singing, which I thought were worse than awful the first time I heard him sing...

    >Or were you like me and maybe heard Images and Words first

Just like you... Had read about DT, but never listened to one of their albums... One day I was in this record store, saw I&W and since I'd heard how great their guitar player was, I thought I'd pick it up... Which turned out to be a great thing... :-)

    >Eventhou' I'm very critical about vocals (I *hate* cookie >monsters ;) I actually got past them, and now I think they're >listenable, but God, did I ever the first time !!! ;)

Yeah, same with me... First time I played the cd, I was so disgusted and disappointed with Charles's performance that I couldn't listen to it again for months... Then right about the time OFB started touring Europe last year, I saw people raving about Only a Matter of Time, saying it was their favorite DT song and stuff like that, so I figured I had to go back and give it another try... And oddly enough, the album started growing on me, and I think it's a very good album... Charles's vocals don't sound that awful anymore (although the end of TKH, when he goes: "I am the killing haaaaand" is one of the worst things I've ever heard), all the songs, except for Status Seeker maybe, are GREAT, IMO... As Janne mentions later in his post, the production of the album could be a lot better, but it doesn't ruin the album for me...

sounds more like an album title... may want to think shorter.

suggestions would really have to follow your band's sound, direction, and writing style.

more traditional prog names would demand the shock value be somewhat obscured. e.g. King Crimson (satan. no kidding)

Hey all. If anybody cares, I put together a pretty simple WDADU resource page. It's got scans of a lot of press clippings and press kits (about 25 articles), along with Dream Theater's set at the 1989 MCA records showcase in mp3. Just a warning, the scans are rather large, so you can read the articles. The URL is below!

Back in 1989, there was no prog scene to speak of, like there is today, I was into metal and AOR. I remember picking up WDADU, it had a sticker on it, hand written by the record shop which said 'Rush meets Metallica'. The moment I heard it I was hooked, everything about it was the music I'd been waiting to hear all my life. So the production wasn't the best and Charlie's voice was no Geoff Tate's, but the most important thing then, as it is now, is the great songs that made WDADU what is is, a classic progressive album. Looking back for me Charlie's voice seemed to find the band rather well, and let me tell you when I first heard JLB on I&W it was quite a shock to hear someone other than Charlie singing for DT.

As far as debut albums go, it was a pretty good one, think of it more as a learning curve and without it I don't think I&W would have been the album that it is without it's predecessor WDADU.

Like it or not WDADU is an integral part of DT history :)

Art thank you very much for a great tribute to WDADU, nice work :) Your efforts are greatly appreciated.

As you folks may or may not remember, I was on the hunt for some information - ANY information - on a particular song and group name. Well, I think I found that info. The song was indeed called Green River, the band is a local (well, not to me right now :) NY act called Demonspeed. I am still trying to locate any sound file on the net of this song, e.g. mp3, wav if absolutely necessary. If you have this sucker, or any leads where I could encounter it, that would rock.

I already ran a search on most major online CD stores (read: major). Nada. Kind of "obscure" that way.

Thanks in advance for any (more) info! Alex "the Chick"

.. yes, it's true. I just got back from taking the wife to see Ricky Martin. And I gotta give the man his credit - he puts on a very entertaining show. Not that bad at all... plus I was able to get a few notches in the credit column with the wife, if ya know what I'm saying. It was certainly MUCH more entertaining than any of the 3 Michael Bolton concerts I got dragged to! :-P It's hard to believe that she used to love Bolton, but has always been a big DT fan as well. (She LOVES SFAM!)

Anyway, the real purpose of this post is to ask a few questions about the Gathering. Thanks to a couple of MP3's from Korg (you STILL da man! :-) ) I picked up "Nighttime Birds" and have fallen in love with it. I was wondering how the other albums with Anneke compare to this one? From what I've read, the popular choice for best album by the Gathering is NB, but I also know that Anneke sang on Mandylion and the latest one, How To Measure a Planet. How are these other 2 compared to NB? Are they stylistically similar? If I love NB, will I love these as well? Does anyone have any MP3's floating around from either of these 2 albums?

Well, that's about it. Thanks in advance...

    - Matt T., still shaking his bon-bon ;-)

Well, stylistically, Mandylion is fairly similar to NB. Maybe a bit "darker", and a bit heavier. But the same overall flavor. If you love NB, you'll certainly like Mandylion.

"How To Measure A Planet" is almost completely different. Fairly Floydian; kinda slower, more psych-y stuff. Not "metal" at all. I go against the usual Ytsejam consensus in that HTMAP is my *favorite* Gathering album. Amazingly well-recorded, and probably Anneke's best/ most emotional performance. "Rescue Me" is worth the price of the album. :-)

You're correct that Anneke didn't sing on their earlier albums, "Always" and "Almost A Dance". Those have a cookie-monster death metal singer (except for one track on Always).

They also have a recently-released live album called Superheat, which is pretty good. I'd get the 3 Anneke studio albums first, though.

As for sound clips, I dunno, but you could stop by Ytseradio (irc.dreamt.org, port 2112, channel #ytseradio) and request some. Probably half the DJs have some of their stuff. I've got all of it except "Almost a Dance"; I'm on Sundays 6-8 PM EST and Mondays 8-10 PM. ( http://www.ytseradio.com for all the info).

Greetings All Last issue Oddvar Lovaas expressed boredom & wanted a new debate but brought up theory again. I think that's been covered recently. Try referring to back issues for all the insight you need.:) But while we're on the subject of debate (Gee I hope this doesn't hurt ) Can anyone tell me why DT never comes to Tennessee? I mean sure we got rednecks and twangy ass country music, but the area I'm from is predominantly metal with a large portion of prog rockers on the local scene. I was wondering if TN had been blacklisted or something considering the last progressive band in the tri-cities was probably Queensryche during the Empire days. O.K. I guess it sucks living in the "Bible belt" sometimes (some of you may remember White Zombie being banned from Johson City a couple years ago) Is this reason enough to completely overlook an entire state, I don't care to drive a few hours to see OFB but what about the multitude of other bands who skip us poor hillbillies? Also I was curious if anyone knew what Tony Levin has been up to lately. Has anyone heard his work on Paula Cole latest record "Amen" Pretty sweet stuff. If you like freeverse poetry. Until next time PEACE!!! Billy
