I am starting an email campaign for Warner Bros. Publisher, Keyboard
Magazine, Guitar World, and Guitar One.

All this information is available at
http://www.snowhill.com/~bvaughn/petrucci.htm . Click on the news section.

Dream Theater has released one of their best albums ever, and hardly any
publication company is giving them notice. I have spoken to some of the
guys in the band about this, and they are surprised as well. I think this
trend needs to stop now. I am asking that you send an email to each one of
these companies, kindly asking that they do a cover story on the respective
member of Dream Theater. Even if you only play drums, keyboard, bass, ...
or just sing! .... please take the time and email these people. The more
people we can get to write, the better we can get the Dream Theater name
    back out in the public.

    Specifically:

    1. Email Warner Bros. Publishing ( Webmaster@warnerchappell.com ). Make
sure to put in the subject line or main message of the body: ATTENTION:
Larry Kornblum. Warner Bros. has always been good about putting out TAB
books for John Petrucci. But I think it is about time that they publish
some keyboard transcriptions as well. I believe they have talked this over
with Jordan Rudess, but they are not sure if there is enough interest.
Please email them and nicely ask that they publish some keyboard
transcriptions for Dream Theater (either a selection from different albums,
or whole albums (my choice)). Also, ask that they make an instructional
video with Jordan Rudess. Warner Brothers has some of the rudest people
I've ever talked to on the phone. Everytime I have made contact with them,
I have been ill-treated. The above email address is the best I can do so
far. If I find a better one, I'll let you know. So when you write, be
nice, but firm that they send this email to the proper person in charge (who
    should be Larry Kornblum).

    2. Email Keyboard Magazine ( gregrule@mfi.com; keyboard@mfi.com ). The
editor is Greg Rule. Kindly ask that they do a cover story on Jordan Rudess
and progressive keyboarding in the new millenium. Ask if they will do a
private lesson to also include in the magazine. My sane partner, Brandon
Vaughn, recently did an outstanding 45-minute interview with Jordan in
Orlando. His interview contains answers to such questions as:
descriptions on how Dream Theater writes songs and solos; how to remember
complex arrangements; practice regimen; constructing solos; arpeggio
technique; etc. He also has several pictures of his stage setup. I think
Brandon's interview would be great in Keyboard. If you think so, ask that
Keyboard consider running his interview and contact him at
    bvaughn@snowhill.com .

    3. Email Guitar World ( editor@guitarworld.com;
    soundingboard@guitarworld.com; transcriptions@guitarworld.com ). Alan Paul
is their editor. Guitar World has run 2 songs by Dream Theater in the past,
and a whole bunch of lessons by John that are to included in a new book soon
to be released. Write them and kindly ask that they do a cover story on
John Petrucci with a song transcription. Mention that a small side article
that goes into his current equipment setup in detail would be nice as well.
Also ask that they bring John back on as a columist.

    4. Email Guitar One ( GuitarOne@cherrylane.com ). The Editor-in-Chief is
Jeff Schroedl. Guitar One (formerly Guitar) has run several great articles
on John, with transcriptions. But nothing for this awesome album. Write
them and kindly ask that they do a cover story on John Petrucci with a song
transcription. Also ask that they do a small side article that goes into
his current equipment setup in detail.

After doing this, please go to http://www.snowhill.com/~bvaughn/petrucci.htm
and go to the news section. At the bottom, you will see a form to fill out
so I can compile all the names and send a master list to the proper people
at each company (a double dose!).

Thanks for your help in this matter!

Wow..looks like I'm not the only one who bought WDADU back in
1989 (Vinyl of course)...Anyway, despite of Dominici's embarassing
vocal performance (and he could do worst! Take a listen to the
1989 NY Ritz gig and the way he sung Metropolis...aaargh..), I
still find it to be a great record, with some classic tracks as
Fortune In Lies, Ytse Jam, The Killing Hand and, of course, Only
a Matter of Time, which I was very happy to hear again during
the November Euro Tour. Sure, tracks like Status Seeker sound a
bit odd if you hear them after having listened to all of the
following records....at first it was even one of my faves!!

    Hi!

I have problems "catching the sound, the vibe" of a certain scale. I was told it is very used in jazz, that even some famous jazz guitarists (Scofield, ..) play whole 30 minutes jams only in this scale, so it is very, very popular jazz scale. But I can't get it, boil it, it sounds odd.

Does anyone know a specific song, solo which uses this scale, so that I can hear it and see how does it sound.

The scale is called "C melodic" (I guess this is the correct traslation) and it's same as C major except for the flatted third (instead of E there is D#): C D D# F G A B C

I was also told soloing in this scale is possible over the B b7#9 chord (ya know, that Hendrix chord) but to me it seems .... ugggh, ... weird.

    song, mp3, snippet, anything?

    Thanks.

Go out and buy whatever you can immediately! Honest. I ordered Mandylion and Nightime Birds through amazon and am totally blown away by their sound. Her voice is absolutely amazing and I don't usually care for female singers (for as much as I enjoy Tori, she often will get on my nerves after a while) where Anneke's voice is just fantastic. I can honestly say when I heard a few snip-its of the Gathering I wasn't quite sold on them, but trust me these disks are amazing.

No, no, no.... "Always" has grunting vocals, but "Almost a Dance" has normal vocals, a bit strange.... but normal. This is in my opinion a very underrated album, even the band don't like it... it's a mixture of heavy, progressive, AOR, gothic... I love this album.

Yes. Tony is currently touring with the California Guitar Trio composed of former League of Crafty Guitarists members. They may even hit Tennessee if you're lucky. Tony should have a tour schedule on his site. Plus, he's just released a live recording of his and Bruford's project B.L.U.E.

If you don't go see Paula Cole when she comes anywhere near you, you should be shot. Doug Wimbish (ex-Living Color) fills the bass duties adequately.

Yea, I agree. Since you already ripped of a DT line with your first name, how about "First Dancing Turtle"? And I've always liked "Alleged Head". And I seem to remember a post from a couple of months ago that said something like "why isn't there a prog band yet called 'sword of omens'". I laughed. Hard.

Well, technically, it's NOT D#, but rather Eb. All this is is a melodic minor scale, and in fact, there is another part to it that you haven't included: The scale is the same as a natural minor scale, except that it has a raised sixth and seventh scale degree (in this case, A and B). But when it comes back, it is EXACTLY the same as a natural minor scale.

    So the scale goes like this: C D Eb F G A B C Bb Ab G F Eb D C

Sorry I don't have any musical examples for you, but I thought I'd post this anyway and give a little explanation behind it. It's actually a classically-used scale as well, although not in soloing :)

I was under the impression that this single would be available in the US as well, but I haven't been able to find it (CDNow doesn't have it...). Can anybody confirm this? I remember reading in an email about it (maybe from Itchy or Skadz?) that this CD was definitely going to be available everywhere.

I'm planning on buying the SFaM book when it comes out and I was wondering if the other DT music books have the keyboard parts, or just guitar?

Man, I WISH I had a big truck, with a heavy duty chrome bumper. I just took the bumper off my Geo with a telephone pole when I was backing out of a driveway. I barely touched the stupid thing and the whole bumper popped off.

It is not going to be released in US. It reads on the UACM if I remember right.

    Hi there!

I just wanted to warn people not to order To Dimension Logic from the Vauxdvihl merchandise page (www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Cabaret/7429/), at least not if you're interested in actually getting the album. I ordered a copy in September, and I still haven't received it yet. If anyone knows a good place to buy the album, I'd be happy if you could tell me.

I understand that there are two versions of Malmsteen's Concerto, a Rock Edition and a Classical Edition.

Can anyone tell me the difference between the two, and which one is the better one to pick up?

    Thanks,

    Al

I believe that the CD is now deleted, at least all the stores I have been too can't even find the Vauxdvihl name on the computer.

The last I heard from them, they had gone industrial and have released another CD called 'Vog'.

Yeah, that's right, but I think the scale Cyberduke wants is the Jazz Minor Scale, which is just flat third up and down.

About B b7#9. If you're primarily soloing C Jazz Minor over this chord, the sound is going to be stressing a root at B, therefore it's going to imply the seventh mode of the Jazz Minor Scale (which I don't know the name of, if it even has one).
