One thing about the Gathering (aside from I think Always sucks, hehehe,
    I hate the Cookie Monster)...

There's another band out there, you could almost call them a clone,
called Dreams of Sanity. They were recommended when we were first
talking about the Gathering before. Well, I got my copy of their
Komodia album from moremetal.com (shameless plug for my favorite import
store) a month or two ago and never took the time to give them a good
listen. But, really, I think if you liked Nighttime Birds (yeah, YOU
Matt!) you should pick this up. If anything, the complexity of the
music is quite a bit greater and these guys have, count 'em, 2 female
vocalists. :) Both with voices as sweet as Anneke's.

And it's got a concept behind it, too. :) The 4 part song Komodia is
based on Dante's Inferno, I take it. I never read it myself so I can
only say, "Yup, mmmhmm. It is!"

Of course... I'll upload MP3's if you kindly remind me before bedtime.

After a week of following the jam, I've decided to enter the "flaming" depths....(deep breath) First of all, just got Transatlantic. Awesome. Just awesome. This has got to be the best album since...since...well since SFAM anyway. I had no idea what to expect, not being familiar with Spock's Beard, Marillion or Flower Kings. I've been wanting to give these bands a listen to, but always put it off for groups I was more familiar with. (mostly Magna Carta stuff) Can any one tell me how representative of these other bands' work Trans is? It sure don't sound like DT. Also thanks for mentioning The Gathering. It made me curious enough to go check out the mp3 and I was impressed. Second, on the topic of WDADU, I remember my senior year at good 'ol Palm Beach Gardens High, reading a "player spotlight" in Guitar World about this Berkeley shredder named John Petrucci. It mentioned an an album coming out on an indy label, so my friend Ray and I special ordered it at the music store we worked at...We've been hooked ever since. A few of you mentioned the cheese factor. Go back and listen to Queensryche, Testament, Fates Warning or just about any other metal from back then...It was ALL cheesy compared to now. But I will admit, 11 years, experience , a better singer, good mixing and production will do wonders. Oh yeah, having a keyboard God join the band didn't hurt. I liked Derek, but he never quite filled Kevin's shoes to me. Jordan is the perfect fit , and with this lineup I think they will continue to surprise and amaze us all. Lastly , (finally), I've been following the posts about the remaining mysteries in SFAM. Some of those theories are OUT THERE!!! The only thing I can't figure out is who the old man in FT is. Seems like not only does he approach Nicholas to tell him about the murder, but he apparently recognizes him for who he really is (Victoria) "You'll know the truth as your future days unfold". Anyone have a theory that doesn't involve having to reincarnate EVERYBODY? Maybe Mulder and Scully can figure it out. Sorry for the length of this post, but I've been saving this until I got the feel of the group. From now on, I'll try to keep it to one topic at a time. Feel free to email me , would love to have more people to talk good music with. I'm so glad to see prog so large, diverse, and alive. By the way, anyone know JP's reason for leaving Ibanez? I heard that it's because they weren't willing to get more experimental, in which case Music Man should be awesome for him. Also is Ibanez still gonna release the JP5 they have ready or scrap it? (Newbie question: How do I include links in my posts? No flames, just private email please. Thanks)

Where else can I share this without sounding like an idiot? :)

Last night I had a dream I was in High School again and John P. and KevMo held a clinic in my math class. I just happened to be wearing my old DT Images & Words shirt that day and both guys were totally showing favoritism to me. Kevin gave me a ChromaKey T-Shirt and took off before I had a chance to ask him when ChromaKey 2 would be out. John gave me a leather Tour Jacket (nice!) and I talked with him out to catch the school bus. He remarked, "How the fuck can it be snowing and raining at the same time?" (it's always dreary weather in my dreams). On the bus was his family. Rena started bitching him out about taking too long. He hopped in and took off. I was about to start walking around showing off my new jacket when I woke up. :P I was pissed. That was a cool jacket. One bonus, though, all the kids in my math class thought DT rokd nadz. :) -- KorgX3 is going to get his leather jacket painted like that. NP: Shania Twain - Come on Over.m3u

Anyone not interested in theory, skip the rest of this, and don't bother whining.

CyberDuke enquired about the Melodic Minor scale: > I have problems "catching the sound, the vibe" of a certain scale. I was > told it is very used in jazz, that even some famous jazz guitarists > (Scofield, ..) play whole 30 minutes jams only in this scale, so it is > very, very popular jazz scale. But I can't get it, boil it, it sounds > odd.

It's a very easy tonality to hear in your head if you play over the right kind of thing. You might need to analyze your chord progression in order to hear this right. I'll get deeper into this at the bottom...

    > Does anyone know a specific song, solo which uses this scale, so that I > can hear it and see how does it sound.

Almost ALL jazz. Almost ALL Scofield tunes. The trick is that good jazz usually avoids being obviously scalar... instead relying on chord tones as much as possible in a solo. It's sort of a half and half mix, with some chromaticism and "outside" playing mixed in, in the case of most contemporary jazz players. That's a massive oversimplification for brevity, so please, no flames.

    > there is D#): C D D# F G A B C

Remember, in 7 tone scales, you only use a letter name once per octave, even if it means you have to say Cbb or Fx or whatever. It will help you relate the scales to the major scales they're derived from.

    > I was also told soloing in this scale is possible over the B b7#9 chord > (ya know, that Hendrix chord) but to me it seems .... ugggh, ... weird.

You have to treat the B as the root in that case. So the tones you want to outline are B (the root), D (the b3 or the #9, depending on application), F (the b5) and A (the b7) which make up the basis for your chord. The scale would then be the 7th mode of Melodic Minor (B Altered Scale as we learned it, or B Diminished Whole-tone as one of my books has it, to answer someone else's question)

    > song, mp3, snippet, anything?

I can MP3 you a background track of a minor (jazz) blues, in which the Melodic Minor scale fits right in, or you could look into some standards, maybe in a Real Book or something... the song "Beautiful Love" comes to mind (what a depressing and dark melody for such a happy title!)

    > From: Andrew Coutermarsh <a_couter@oz.plymouth.edu> > when it comes back, it is EXACTLY the same as a natural minor scale.

While you were the first to nail it, in jazz, typically one ignores the descending rule, and plays it the same up and down. This is mainly because in jazz one will not be playing the scale in terms of up and down, hopefully, but in terms of melody, and how the scale works with the chords harmonically. To get the sound of C Melodic Minor, try playing the scale (C,D,Eb,F,G,A,B) over the chords derived from it. They are as follows:

    C Minor-Major7 (C-Maj7): C, Eb, G, B D sus b9: D, F, A, C (that's D-7, but on guitar, you can use that or swap out the F(3) and A(5) for G(4) and Eb(b9) to hear the tonality better. Eb Maj #5: Eb, G, B, D F7 #11 (this is my favorite chord! :) F, A, C, Eb (I'd replace the C with B to get the #11 sound) G7 altered (G7alt): G, B, D, F. (that's G7, and the obvious alteration would be to swap out the D for an Eb) A Half-diminished: A, C, Eb, G B7 alt: Jimi Hendrix chord :)

Yeah, but it's the least expensive thing to do, you cheap bastards. :)

But I forgot, now there is surgery that allows you to upgrade your voice. :) I hear the new 7-string voices with mahogony bodies and the piezo nasal bridge pickups are pretty damn good. :) And those new vocal "chords" that allow you to make your own vocal harmonies without the aid of digital processing. I guess James had them implanted and recorded To Live Forever with them. I always wondered why D-Man was so impressed with the harmonies in that song. :) -- At least KorgX3's instruments don't smoke or drink. NP: Pearl Jam - Deep.mp3

Thanks for everybodies suggestions, I am only 15, and I am not good with this kind of things. I know reflections of reality is a rip off of a DT song, but when I was listening to the mirror, I didn't hear any of the other lyrics when I was listening to it, and that line jut popped on me, and I thought it sounded cool. I kind of like Schoolyard Massacre. The only reason I used Reflections was that we had to come up with a name fast, and I couldn't think of anything else. We are trying to come up with a new name now and we are probably going to call our first cd Reflections of Reality. My friend and I have already written some really cool lyrics and everything. Any more suggestions would be appreciated. I just got the new Platypus cd, I think it is ok. I haven't gotten a chance to really listen to it yet, but I already know I like LTE better. I was pissed off to find out that the Transatlantic has been held back to April 11. Nobody had it, and one place told me that is was held back. That really pissed me off, I have been waiting for this one for a while, then I have to wait three more weeks. Can anybody tell me if they were wrong and that is out. Nobody has it, and I live in Dallas. Talk to you all later.

Well, if you're like THIS singer (me), you end up buying the whole damned PA system to go with that microphone, not to mention all the mics for the drums and guitar/bass cabinets (don't forget cables). The thing that REALLY sucks is being a metal guitarist AND singer (like me)... :)

    > > Yeah, that's right, but I think the scale Cyberduke wants is the Jazz Minor > Scale, which is just flat third up and down. > > About B b7#9. If you're primarily soloing C Jazz Minor over this chord, the > sound is going to be stressing a root at B, therefore it's going to imply > the seventh mode of the Jazz Minor Scale (which I don't know the name of, if > it even has one). '

Well, the 7th mode of Melodic Minor is called an Altered scale. This is a very cool scale cause you basically every single note in the scale is altered flat or sharp except the root. So theoretically, C melodic minor would work over a B7#9 chord because B is the 7th scale degree of C melodic minor. This sound works because in the B7#9 you have a #9 which is an altered tone. While you're at it, try playing the scale over B7b9, B7b9#11, B7b9#11b13b54 or whatever. However, it wouldn't work over Bb7#9 chord as Cyberduke asked.

To further clear things up, the melodic minor in jazz and classical are different. As Countermarsh pointed out, in classical theory, the melodic minor descends as a different scale (natural minor) then it ascends. However, jazz players don't bother with that shit and they're just gonna play it the same way up and down. In this case they sometimes call it jazz minor. Not like any real improviser would just go all the way up and down one scale anyway.

Cyberduke also said that that guys like Scofield would jam for 30 minutes just on this scale. Well that's not true either. Jazz players will most often use different scales from one measure to the next and when mixed up with plenty of chromatics, passing tones, and just general playing outside the key, you're rarely going to hear one scale sound for an extended period of time. Many people get confused when they hear the term "modal jazz" and they think that means the musicians are just jamming on one mode for ever. In fact, in modal jazz more than any kind of jazz besides maybe avant-garde and free jazz, the players are playing many different scales over one main tonal center. I hope you're not all too bored by now. My favorite Scofield record is Hand Jive btw.

"Hey, have you weard 'That Song'?"

Josh stole that idea from me. :P It was MY idea to use "That Band" and "That Song". But he'd never tell you that :)

Our band did something similar. Band is called "The Greatest Band Ever" and our first partial song (never complete instrumental) was called "My Favorite Song"

Sounds like an Abbot and Costello bit. Actually, "That Song" is the name of a song by Big Wreck and that song is pretty damn song.

As for band name suggestions: For silly names, I've always been partial to:

    The Fudge Monkeys and

    Public Enema

For serious, "proggish" names, I've always liked "Absolute Zero"

I always liked the classic "Free Beer, No Cover" - that'll get 'em in the door!

My band in the 70's and 80's was called "Nasty Jack" - several meanings to that one, kids. Of course, somebody always asked "Which one's Jack?"

We always had fun trying to think up new names - how about these:

Peter Fondle One-Eyed Dick The Kneehangers

Yeah, you could say we kinda had a theme going there . . . we were definitely young, dumb and full o' cum, but we sure had a great time. This was before AIDS, ya know - "safe sex" meant you pulled the van over before you blew your load. Ah, the memories . . .

Even better would be after their Japanese names: Gatchaman and Space Battleship Yamato. Actually the latter would make a damn cool name ;)

I was on Napster one time, so just for shits and giggles, I did a search for Dream Theater. I came up with nothing (which is kinda scary, if you think about it). Then, again for shits and giggles, I did a search for LTE and found two or three matches. You'd think they'd have DT if they had LTE. But oh well...
