    Hello all,
I am a Napster User, and I have a ton of DT MP3's, about 400 Megs of
them. The only problem is that I am behind a firewall, so I don't even show
up on a search. It takes the server too long to get through the firewall to
ping me, but I can get out at a very fast rate, I am on a T1. If you use
ICQ, and are on more than just a modem, I am willing to ICQ a bunch of these
MP3's to you. My ICQ # 37995978, or you can just search for my e-mail
address, Joseph.Latuscha@maine.edu. I will not send them to you if you are
on a modem, it is just too slow (and I am sorry if you are a modem user).
Feel free to e-mail me and I can postulate a list of these MP3's for y'all.
    L8R fellow YTSE-JAMers...
    Joe

Racer X was the biggest thing in shred guitar in the 80's. I always
liked Cacophony more, but Racer X had a HUGE following in the LA scene
(unfortunately, I was like, 11 and living in Chicago!). The band consisted
of Paul Gilbert and Bruce Bouillet on guitar, John Alderete on bass, Scott
Travis on drums and Jeff Martin on vocals.
That all being said, YES, there is shit that Paul Gilbert can do that JP
can't do, but JP can do stuff that Paul can't do. The more important note
is that Paul was doing this stuff almost 15 years ago with Racer X. Paul is
one of the guys responsible for shred guitar. He's probably the most
interviewed guitarist in Japanese guitar mags (which bury our wimpy American
publications). Something interesting you might go back and do is to watch
LiT and then watch Rock Discipline, and see how much JP has changed. I
don't think he was technically at Gilbert's level (though conceptually,
certainly) back in the I&W days... but the man is a machine. He is such a
dedicated "practicer" for lack of a better term. Paul has been from day one
with Racer X, a purebred shredder. It's hard to find "advances" he made in
his career, if you ask me. Just unstopable chops on top of chops. I assure
you, however, that JP can do string skipping arpeggios. :)
JP has been influenced by Racer X, I believe. That whole Erotomania end
solo is like a Racer X kind of vibe. Tunes like "Skit Skat Wah" were
written around the same exact technique, and ran through similar
neo-classical progressions. Paul was there first (though I think he's
younger than JP) but JP has most certainly caught up with a vengeance! The
thing I notice about John is that he's covered more ground. He has more
vibes in his playing. I'm gonna stop rambling now. Everyone who likes
psycho guitar music owes it to themselves to check out some Racer X. And
    tune out the lyrics. :)

Racer X has a new album... should be out soon in the US. It's the
original lineup, except that Bruce couldn't play on the album due to hand
problems... not sure if it's CTS or tendonitis or something more serious. I
read in Guitar1 that he's in too much pain to play.

    Later!

clip of the first single (Wicker Man) from the new Iron Maiden (Brave New
    World) available at www.ironmaiden.com

Sounds more like the later solo Bruce Dickinson material than recent Maiden
proper, and in my opinion, that's a damn good thing. There's also a classic
Maiden kick that opens up the proceedings.

The clip is only a minute long, but it's a great sign if the rest of the
album is like this minute. The hype on the official page about taking good
elements from the past twenty years and mixing them up just may prove true
    :)

one things for sure, this clip, at least is mixed waaaaay better than
virtual XI, which may have been the 'deadest' album ever created

    Hey guys,
First off Im a HUGE SK fan, since the Lizard. I have the first CD
autographed by Jason himself. DITD and Water are my favs I think. Water
has some cool stuff on it. Jason new bands CD called Shuttlecok comes
out in April. They had a song called Super Down in American Pie. Its
playing when they are in the pizza parlor discussing their virginity. I
highly reccommend them, just good ole rock n roll.

On the topic of Xmas CD's All I have been hearing is that the 1st batch
DID NOT cover all existing members. Some who joined in like June-Dec did
not get part of the first run. the FC reopend the oppurnity for people to
join until Feb. they got a master list of EVRYONE who didn't get Cd and
ran that many for the second run. The second batch will arrive in April.

I hear the need for a firewall. I'm on cable and I
have two of 'em. However, I know (from experience)
that you can turn down the security settings on your
firewall(s) and allow Napster access. I've done both

I am glad someone brought Rolling Stone up. The lack of coverage on prog
has bothered me. The only time I can remember reading anything about a
progressive band in Rolling Stone was a one sentence slam on Marillion.
There are many other problems I have with Rolling Stone:
Bands that my twelve year old daughter has out-grown on the cover
covers with people who have nothing to do with music
RS seems more interested in freaks than in music

    Does anyone else agree?

Paul Gilbert is an awsome guitarist. Like it is with most things there are probably
some things that Gilbert can do better than Petrucci and vice versa. They both
do great stuff, but I think Petrucci would be a bit ahead in the speed department,
especially when it comes to single string playing. He doesnt do a lot of string
    skipping.
Im sure Petrucci is capable of anything if he sat down a practised it for awhile
    though.

I've heard some of the new Sym X and let me tell you, it may very well be

I don't understand this. Why do people think that
it's within their power to dictate to people what the
latest musical trend is? Let's face it, if and when
prog music becomes fashionable again, it probably
won't be for another twenty or so years (it took swing
a hell of a long time to "come back" and that was only
for a few months and it was mostly posers). People
like what they like (or what they've been told to
like) so there's jackshit pretty much anyone can do
about it. That's how it goes.

But beware if you want to surrender to the secret!! MAJOR SPOILERS!!

The gig last night in Helsinki was amazing! The sound was just excellent!
Usually it's pain to listen without ear plugs but this time I took the
plugs off several times just to listen to the great bass drum sound.

Also the guitar was mixed rather quiet, so that you can not just hear the
rest of the band but hear the guitar also. Usually the guitar is mixed
overwhelmingly loud and there's just the high of the sound that hurts your
ear. This time the balance was really good and your could hear tones and all.

LaBrie has a long hair again. I have not seen recent photos much and I was
happy with the long har as it looks much better with James than the short
hair which he used to have during FII. Propably Derek told him to cut his
hair, I don't know... I tend to blame Derek for most of the bad changes...
Anyway, he looked more like I&W-like again. Much better. Stangely enough,
he looks more masculine with the long hair than with the short hair.

The set list was not a surprise after you know what they have done
previously on this tour and and the mini tour before new year. There was
everything from Dr. Evil-theme to LTE-stuff.

I bought the tour book which has a lot of photos, not much text. The great
catch is that it's a commemorative book, there are photos from every past
tour and record (-85-00). The price was about 10 euros in Finland but if
you find the old photos interesting like I do, it's really worth it.

The cap was really expensive (20 euros) but it's cool! Black cap and golden
text, big logo in the fore, M2000 - Dream Theater text in the back of the
cap. Finally a good looking cap.

I liked only one t-shirt... The black one with album cover in the front,
members names in the back. I bought 2 of them...
There was a white t-shirt with Murder-newspaper clip in the front and the
band name in the back and also there was a black t with a band shot in the
front and a tour dates in the back. They were also quite good but the best
(to my taste) would have been the album cover in the front and the tour
dates in the back. However, I'm satisfied with the cover shirt.

There was also loads of other merchandise so if you're into spending (like
my girl friend whined) make sure to take a lot of cash with you.

    Back to the actual show...
There was no drum solo! Actually that does not matter as Mike really plays
worth for all our collective ticket money through the show, except for
Through your eyes which had a drum machine! I said to my frinds that maybe
Mike had to take a dump while... No, seriously, it's a long show and I
understand that you need some little breaks during it. Especially as Mike's
playing is so energetic. Still, the drum machine is quite annoying but the
audience seemed to live with that.

For the big video screens that I heard people talking about... Yeah, there
    were 6 TV-sets...

And Jordan really rules! No doubt, he's the man for this job! Derek was
more into other stuff but Jordan is really playing. I think DT needs a
player like Jordan, not a worship-me-kind of guy like Derek.

Somebody else might write something more about the actual show than I do
but I would always like to know what kind of merchandise to expect but
nobody ever tells about it. The FII-tour was a disappointment for me also
in the selection of merchandizing but this time the stuff is good.

All in all, it was great to see Dream Theater back in the lines that most
of us like, FII tour was a disappointment for me in many ways. Everything
seems to be back to normal after that horrible Derek-incident. I hope they
    return to Finland soon.

Yes, and his ass is sooooo much tighter, too. It was good to see him in
his old leather pants from the old I&W days again. Mmmm... Maybe it's
better he didn't partake of my twinkie. I'd hate to see that sweet ass
balloon! And, yup, with the hair again, he's gone back to the ol' Gabby
Reece from behind look. I love it. Turn around James. Oooh, yeah. :)

And let's never forget to take a good five minutes out of our day to
Damn Derek for trying to ruin our favorite band. Being the newest
member, he was, of course, granted complete control over the whole FII
situation. What a complete utter waste of a four year wait between
albums. DAMN DEREK! I'm glad DT "woke up" from the delusion they had
to even appoint such a talentless buffoon as their keyboard player!
Over Jeennss Joohhaannssoonn (bjork bjork bjork!) even, paltry Casio
player though he may be! ;) *Korg passes out autographed umlauts to
    everyone*

Yup. It's a damn good thing they came up with a vaccination for Derek.

Why are you buying bootlegs from the current tour ? Ebay is nothing short of scandalous the way some so called DT fans charge ridiculous prices for boots that should be traded. In fact I'd go as far to say, their greedy thieves trying to make blatant profit off desperate DT fans :) I'm sure there's some kind soul on this list who copy you a boot for costs only. Maybe some how e could start a CD tree with a decent quality boot from the current tour. Anyone ??

OK, Here's a little review of the yesterday's concert in Helsinki. First of all, the seats that I got us were horrible, they were straight left from the stage, so we would have maybe seen a glimpse of Jordan every now and then.. So, we moved to perhaps the farthest corner of the Ice Hall, we were really high, so I would have got great pictures if my camera had had a better zoom.. I would have loved seeing them more closely, but that was compensated a bit by the fact that I had met the band up close & personal the day before.

Anyway, Spock's Beard started about 20:15 and played for about 35 minutes. Some of our group (including me) liked them very much, the other's didn't care about them.. They played well, despite some technical problems with Alan's acoustic in The Doorway's acoustic duet. I think they played 4 songs: 1. Day for Night 2. (I didn't know this one.. Anyone?) 3. The Doorway 4. The Light

Then there was some set change and sound check, and 21:20 Dream Theater came on. The sound and mix were excellent, my only complain is about the bass drum sound.. When Mike played it "normally" it sounded great, but when he accented the beats there was this very audible click in the sound that I didn't like. Otherwise the sounds were great, and we could easily hear everybody in the mix, the guitar wasn't too loud. James sounded very in shape too. And in the middle of The Dance of Eternity there was Jordan's keyboard solo.. You should have seen the look on my friend's face, he's played classical piano for 13 years and is probably one of Finland's best pianists in our age group. And he was blown away by Jordan's solo =) Anyway, the set list was 1. Metropolis part II: Scenes from a Memory (in it's entirety, with keyboard solo in TDOE) 2. Peruvian Skies 3. Dr. Evil's theme 4. Instrumental Medley 5. When Images & Words Unite -medley

(I may have confused the order.. But that was what they played, anyway =)

Do anyone know the setlist of the show played in Helsinki March 24th?

    Thanks:)
