Yes, I whole-heartedly agree. Matter of fact, I no longer have a
subscription to Rolling Stone. Your comment about your daughter reminds me
of my own daughter. All of these boy bands, can't help but wonder where
they'll be in a few years. I don't want to stiffle her love for music, so
I never badmouth the bands, but sheesh! The next few years should be

Anyone remember the backstreet boys thread of a couple of weeks ago?
There was this one guy who said that they were using Backstreet boys music
at the University of Toronto to pressure student protesters who were
occupying the president's office. Well there is more to this story. Read on:
"While the lights are kept on at all times, three police officers are on
constant guard and play music almost non-stop, heavy metal and thrash music
during the day, and pop bands like the Backstreet boys during the night.
"Despite the music playing all night we're doing all right,"said SAS
volunteer Sonia Singh. "The earplugs work pretty well."
Police deny that they are using the music as a pressure tactic.
"The music's just for us so we don't get bored,"said sergeant Darren
Joyce."This is standard stuff. It's a long haul, both for the kids and us."

Anyone who was there and knows if they played any DT?

    |if petrucci isnt the num
    |1 guitarist then can someone please tell us who is?

Listen, I knew about DT about 7 years ago, but back then I wasn't listening to em, and then I thought that the best were Satriani,
Slash, Clapton. But 2 years ago I rediscovered DT so now I can't spend a day without SFAM or Once in a Livetime, so these days my
#1 is definitely Petrucci. But most probably the best is: Steve Vai. And we all know that JP has SV as an idol. Still for me
Petrucci rules, I mean, he's so fast, listen to the end of the solo from Paris: he demolished the guitar playing the bumble-bee,
you can hear him picking the stringz.

    John Petrucci Rules!!!!!!!!

    Hi!

Just got back from a chat with Jordan Rudess, will be speaking with
Spock's Beard this afternoon, so all you Stockholm fans make sure you
tune in to PROG-O-RAMA next Sunday, the 2nd of April, 01.00 at night.
Studentradion 95,3 MHz. It's not the size, it's the frequency, as we use
    to say. See ya tonite!

Might as well tune in around 23.00 already, since the metal show GRUVAN
are featuring Spiritual Beggars in the studio. You know, Mike Amott's
(ex-Carcass, also in Arch Enemy) great 70's infl heavy thing, like a
metal version of Mountain and Rainbow.

I have promised not to spill any beans, but I've heard four songs from
the Iron Maiden album, and basically they rock, they are varied, long,
anthem-y and cool. I think most ppl will be very pleased.

Well, as a songwriter he's progressed a lot. His solo albums aren't bad

No way, man, you're on the right track. Anyone who would
suggest lobbying Spun or Rolled Stone is themselves being
naieve, or at least hopelessly optimistic. Those magazines
are NOT going to support Dream Theater. Goddamn it, even Q
only manages to be lukewarm about them, and it's a far
superior and musically-oriented publication than those
two. It's a nice fantasy, but let's concentrate our efforts on lobbying magazines that are likely to be more
    sympathetic.

Incidentally, I e-mailed Guitarist magazine over here, and
the very nice editor Mr Neville Marten replied personally
saying that they'd done a DT feature circa FII (I remember
it; a 2-page spread with a full stage photo of JP. The
only memorable line was that JP's already afflicted of
tendonitus or something similar), and would be seeking
him out again when DT reach Britain. Woohooo!

As far as I can tell, there aren't a lot of technical
tricks that JP CAN'T do! The difference is that JP keeps
his chops under a pretty tight reign normally. Paul
Gilbert finally learned to do the same, and Racer X split
up, because they were really only ever a rather dull
shred-fest. Think Jason Becker's "Perpetual Burn" album,
but turned up to 11. El Gilberto calmed down, and joined
the rather more interesting Mr Big.

I'm trying to deal with this in a constructive way; but
WHY THE HELL DO PEOPLE FEEL SUCH AN URGE TO RIP ON DEREK?!

For cryin out loud, you've had it from everyone - yes,
including Mr Portnoy - FII was more commercially-oriented
than "normal" (and besides, what the hell is "normal" in
DT's case?! Name me two DT records that sound even similar
before you throw around ideas like "normal") because the
Record Company demanded it and the band agreed that maybe
they should try to simplify the sound. As I understand it,
Derek's participation in the writing of FII was pretty
limited (he wrote large bits of LitS and NM, the latter
would have been great if the production hadn't been so
god-awful on it and the lyrics hadn't been so half-arsed). As for live shows...Well duh, if you're playing live,
having a showman in the band might be considered a pretty
good idea. Unless you're Pink Floyd, and live...DT ain't.

For those of you who haven't visited Bogie's great Lines in the Sand
website lately, I have joined the team as a kind of co-webmaster. Bogie is
extremely busy with his studies (finished in June, though - congrats!), so
I'm helping out with adding new shows, new news, etc.

I've seen a lot of people looking for shows from the current tour, and we
aim to fill that demand. There are currently three new shows up:

New York, New York - 9/27/92 (First show of the I&W tour! This is one I
cleaned up from an analog master - definitely a collectible!)
Den Bosch, Holland - 12/03/97 (Great sounding show from the first part of
    the FII tour)
LTE at NAMM - 1/30/99 (Great recording of the rare LTE live shows. A
shortened set at NAMM, but great anyways)

Later today I'm adding 8/26/98, a very good recording of Dream Theater's
opening slot for Deep Purple/ELP in Denver.

Also on the way today or tomorrow is at least one good recording from the
current tour! The likely candidate is St. Louis 2/12/2000. Richard Warren
made a great recording, unlike all too many Dream Theater tapers out there
    lately.

Much more to come in the next week or so, so come and get 'em!

    Enjoy!

    Adam

Why are you allowing yourself to get ripped off by the morons that sell
boots on Ebay? There's always someone willing to spin a show or two for
you for free.. All you've got to do is ask.

If you're looking for St Louis, check out Lines in the Sand in the next day
or so for the whole show in good quality mp3 (160k or 192k, haven't decided
yet). Don't be a fool and buy your bootlegs - just a total waste of money.

Um, yes, Bach - Toccata & Fuga. Do you mean the one in C minor, D minor or G
    minor? Or perhaps C major?

Well, it seems to me that that mag used to have a lot more credibility. At
this point, they just seem to kiss up to whataver the hot trend in music is.
I mean, they've had the Backstreet Boys and N'Sync on the cover in the last
few months. It seems to me that they're doing this for only one reason: to
sell magazines. Now I know that that's their primary goal and all but they
just seem SOO shameless about it anymore. At this point, they don't care WHO
buys their mag, just as long as someone does. and they try their best to hype
and give good reviews of these types of groups to justify their massive
coverage of them. I find it bordering on pathetic. Just my opinion here.

I'm just curious to see what other Pantera fans think of their new album. To
me, it sounds like Far Beyond Driven Pt 2., which isn't necessarily a bad
    thing! Any other opinions?

    WHAT?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
Have you ever listened to albuns like "Brave", "seasons End", "Afraid of
Sunlight"...probably not, or else you'd not say something like that...

Marillion has two completely different phases of its history, there's no
basis of comparison between them...both are extraordinary...

What I have to say for someone who wants to know about Marillion, I'll just
say: "buy any album", not "stick to Fish"...by saying this, you ignore a
    lot of wonderful albuns.

See you when dream and day unite,

Dream Theater never lets down !
Once again the show was great, though I would've
loved to hear them even more than the two hours
they played...too much great songs were still
    missing !

I also went to get their autographs from the
record store in H:ki and took pics from there,
so when I get the scanner I will put the pics
on my website, if they turn out ok of course.
But I will let you know when they're there.

I'm glad that DT is doing much better again,
in all ways, eventhough I still like all of
    their stuff in different ways.
And the Mullmuzzler cd I just got is really
    great !

One question I hope many of you could help
me out with: does anyone know cheap and good
hotels in New York ???? (I only need like
a good bed and a shower I think, 'cos I'm
only gonna sleep in there. And of course I
want to know no one is gonna steel my stuff !)
I'm hoping to find myself from NY in July...

Sounds more like the later solo Bruce Dickinson material than recent Maiden
proper, and in my opinion, that's a damn good thing. There's also a classic
Maiden kick that opens up the proceedings.

The clip is only a minute long, but it's a great sign if the rest of the
album is like this minute. The hype on the official page about taking good
elements from the past twenty years and mixing them up just may prove true
     :)

one things for sure, this clip, at least is mixed waaaaay better than
virtual XI, which may have been the 'deadest' album ever created

It's funny you mention how it sounds like a solo Bruce song... I am almost
positive I remember reading an interview with Bruce a while back when he was
talking about how he wanted to put out a B-Side/Unreleased solo CD and that
one of the songs he wanted to put on it was called "Wicker Man". I've never
heard the Bruce version of it, so I don't know if this Maiden clip is the
same song or if it's just same title but reworked. In any event, I'm having
trouble connecting to listen to the whole clip, but the little I've heard
sounds pretty good. I can't wait til the album comes out!!
