I just read this part in my Computer Network textbook (in

FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface) also uses LEDs
rather than lasers, not only due to their lower cost, but
also because FDDI may sometimes be used to connect directly
to user workstations. There is a danger that curious user
may occasionally unplug the fiber connector and look
directly into it to watch the bits go by at 100 Mbps. With a
laser the curious user might end up with a hole in his
    retina.

Guitar 1? I'm just willing to bet that one of the guitar players from Korn
was higher in the 7-string rankings....

Rolling Stone hasn't supported prog for years. Chances are,
if you read through a few issues, you'll see them unashamedly
    bashing it.

    >Have you ever listened to albuns like "Brave", "seasons End", "Afraid of
    >Sunlight"...probably not, or else you'd not say something like that...

I'm not so certain. Brave is one of my personal favorites (save
for "Paper Lies", which doesn't really sit well with the rest
of the album), which I count as one of the most emotional
works I've ever heard. AoS I've listened to maybe 5 times
and still can't say that I really enjoy it.

    >What I have to say for someone who wants to know about Marillion, I'll just

Actually, I'd tell them to get "Six of One, Half Dozen of the
Other" to compare the two. Or one of the other 'Best Of'
compilations; these are generally the best place to start with
    any band.

imho i think steve vai is the better guitarist. ive wondered if Petrucci could hold up a solo career the same way
as Steve Vai does and still sound fresh and creative. I know that it would be difficult now, but if Petrucci was a bit
older, do you think he could have made a decent solo career?

i've noticed a lot of people trying to get DT 'media exposure', and though
it's a nice gesture, it's kinda pointless, IMHO. Magazines which are owned
by big corporations aren't going to play/write about DT, because they're not
trendy, hence they don't sell magazines, hence they don't make them any
    money. But who cares??
My point is that, if people are dissatisfied with the music they hear on the
radio, eMpTyV, etc, THEY WILL GO OUT AND SEARCH FOR SOMETHING THEY LIKE. We
all did. And anyone getting into prog WILL hear about DT, because they ARE
the most popular modern prog band out there.

*whew* I've become too passive. That little 'rant' just wore me right
    out....

The automation is not functioning right now, due to severa factors. The web
site is not updated to reflect that we do automation. he listener count is
not high enough to justify burning my own machine into the ground for this,
and I really need a second computer to do this right. so, at least
temporarily, there is no automation for No Holds barred Radio. WE will
still be doing live shows on Tuesday nights, with an hour of preview
material starting at 7:00 p.m. It was a difficult decission, but I am
spending too much time keeping the staion going and not enough time writing
material and this has tostop. When I get my hands on a second computer,
then automation will continue. But for right now, I can't justify devoting
my only computer to a cause that isn't drawing enough listeners. If we had
consistent listenership, then I could justify doing it, butsince Shoutcast
no longer carries live365 stations, this has drastically hurt us during the
week. I need my machine back. I will email when we have things up again,
but for now, get your nhb radio fix on Tuesdays starting at 7:00 p.m

Well I managed to wrangle my ex g/f into buying SFAM and she absolutely raved. She likes all the songs (esp "Overture 1928", "Strange Deja Vu" and "One Last Time"). Of the latter, she singled out the drums as being especially powerful. Before I talked her into buying the disc, she said she was really starting to enjoy Yes. She had Big Generator in her car in her stereo all the time. I'm not big on Yes, but I've heard of many other people who dig Yes that also dig DT. I gave her a rough outline of what ACOS is all about and she's nuts to buy that one next. And get this-- she likes Vai and Satch too. What a cool chick. Anyway, thought you guys might get a kick out of this. Check y'all later.

21 hand-picked songs (hand-picked by Andre Olbrich) from Blind Guardian are available for download and listening at http://www.mp3.com/bg. This "best of" collection should give everyone that isn't familiar with Blind Guardian's music a chance to listen to one of the most unique heavy metal bands in the scene today.

This partnership with mp3.com was established to give the fans in America an easy chance to hear Blind Guardian's music since Blind Guardian CDs are still somewhat hard to find in the U.S.A. If these mp3 samples convince you to pick up some Blind Guardian CDs we would appreciate it if you would click on the e-mail link on the web page and tell us. Some CDs are already available in the U.S.A. through Century Media Records (www.centurymedia.com) and other fine online dealers.

Damn. I really, really wish they'll change the post-SfaM stuff pretty soon. I thought they'd mix it up a bit for the people who have seen them on the warmup tour (yeah, they didn't play Finland back then so that's OK, but something in my head tells me that they won't change the setlist for Germany, either). :(

Apologies if my knowledge of German geography isn't that good, but here is the info I have.

The show will be broadcast from 08.00 p.m. until 10.00 p.m. on Rockland Radio, depending upon where you live in the region (near Frankfurt, Darmstadt. Mainz, Wiesbaden) the frequency will be around 105.2 or 105.3 on the FM band. The radio station is also available via cable on 95.75.

The show will feature an interview with the band and music from their gig in paris on 13.02.2000 (including performances of Don Dokken and Patrick Rondat playing with the band).

I was at the gig, and though it wasn't the best I'd ever seem them play, it was a pretty good gig. Watch out for Gunter's keys solo - which owes more than a little to DT and the so-far unreleased instrumental track which follows (now available on the latest boot from OAN). The encores include Don Dokken singing 'Kiss of Death' and 'father' with the band and guitarist patrick Rondat joining the band for 'Rainmaker'. Several of older tracks have been re-arranged from the studio versions, so German fans! man your recording equipment tonite!

Actually, Wes Borland wasn't in the category, hell he wasn't in ANY category! Neither was Kirk Hammet (thank god). The 3 people in front of Petrucci in "best 7 stringer" were:

    1. Steve Vai (no shit) 2. Jimmy Bruno (an AMAZING Jazz 7 stringer) 3. Korn guys

Personally, the GuitarOne awards were 10 times better than any others, mainly because the EDITORS chose who won in each category, it wasn't a write in poll. Though I do admit they seemed to be giving EVH a handjob throughout the categories (hell, better him than the Flacid Muphen, er Limp Bizkit guy).

Hehehe. Yup. :) I have their first self-titled album, found it in the $1 bin at the local music store. One of those albums I bought during my short-lived stint at getting into fusion. :P Not that it's bad, but all that highly technical instrumental stuff just gets on my nerves after, uh, about 5 minutes (a la LTE). :)

BUT, Niacin >is< Billy Sheehan on bass, John Novello on organ, and Dennis Chambers on drums. They have three albums and you can order them from CDNow. I think they even have sound clips, too. It's a dated sound, but so, arguably, is DT; and so, most definitely, is Mr. Big. Now whether you like Racer X or not is your call. I can certainly understand someone not getting into it. But you just can't take it out of context... comparing music from 1987 and 2000 in terms of taste... it's the very definition of "Paradigm Shift." Let's keep in mind that around the time Gilbert formed Mr. Big (whose first album came out in 1989, following 2 studio and 1 live Racer X albums), DT was still called "Majesty" and JP was still including YROs (Yngwie Rip Offs) in some of his solos (check out some of the ACoS and PMU demos). Gilbert and JP are of a similar age (I believe Paul is a year younger)... I don't think you can fairly say that JP calmed down first, if you listen to the audible history B). John Petrucci is about as restrained as my anus after a Burrito Loco. I like what he does, but he does a lot of it, a lot of the time. Restraint is not a virtue known in the world of prog. . C). Show me some 8 finger technique by JP. Show me some finger/plectrum techniques a la Garsed, Howe, Thal. Show me some polyrhythm. Show me some advanced harmonic concepts in terms of song construction and soloing, a la Holdsworth. Show me IMPROVISATION. There are TONS of things JP can't do. No one can do everything. There simply isn't enough time. But if we were to look specifically at techniques, I assure you Gilbert and many others have licks that JP can't do. I'm sure I have licks that JP can't do, and I don't pretend to have arrived at his plane of musicality yet. You have licks he can't do as well, if you've been working hard for a good long time. That's not important... what's important is that JP is playing what he feels, and what his heart tells him to play. But let's get rid of this pedestal. He's great, but greatness is not uncommon, just rarely rewarded. D). Just for my personal benefit, and in the interest of not forcing me to return to my old ways, let's keep the desparaging remarks about Perpetual Burn (which I happen to consider to be one of the most important guitar album in history) to a minimum. There's so much going on on that album... if you can't hear it, that's your problem, but I am still waiting for the day DT, or God forbid, LTE can do anything nearly as interesting. I heard glimmers of a similar depth of emotion in Lines in the Sand in some of the slower, more mellow parts of the solo, as well as in some of the Rock Discipline video chunks (in between sections) but nowhere else in the JP library of sick shred and prog. It's subjective of course, but I have yet to meet a guitarist who could back up his talk who wasn't stunned by Becker. Even Blue Note artist Fareed Haque, the head of the NIU guitar department was taken aback. There's something completely unique in Jason.
