I am not the biggest fan out there of Pantera (hell, I am barely a fan, even
though I
ave purchased everything from "Cowboys" on except the live crap) and I have
to say that pretty much any cd except for "Cowboys" is for sale/trade. I am
sick of this crap and I don't even know why I try anymore. Phil doesn't sing,
and the stupid "weed and booze" lyrics are boring. Add Pantera to the
list of bands whose cds I will no longer buy (Mercyful Fate, Queensryche,
etc.).
There is absolutely nothing original or fresh about "Reinventing the Steel"
despite
what the title might lead the dazed to believe. I guess the band has grown
(coff
coff) away from my tastes...

Nope, at least not in Helsinki...
And, even I didn't quote it here, I gotta agree with you about that Derek
rippin'...He's a great musician, has a different style maybe that DT used to,
they all had impact on FII's sound, and like some other guy previously wrote,
Derek supposedly the least made FII what it is, even his unique sound is
sometimes on top (i.e. Lines In The Sand - intro). But hey, this is all spewed
and spitted, so why waste the bandwidth... Sorry I even started ;-P

Neat thing about Gilbert and Petrucci - neither one has ever been real big on
tapping, or the whammy bar. Makes you wonder how either of them can be
trusted.
Paul Gilbert is a good example of effortless stamina. He could probably pull
off longer passages of uninterrupted notes than Petrucci, and by that I mean
picked notes. Gilbert would make an excellent harpsichord-doubler. Gilbert
also constructs marvelous solos - they fit the melodies and chord changes of
the song to a tee, and like Nuno Bettencourt's solos (from his Extreme days)
they are "little songs within a song." Gilbert is much more song-oriented
than Petrucci, who I would call guitar-oriented. Ask yourself, could John
Petrucci have written "King Of Clubs?" Would he even WANT to?
John Petrucci is definitely the smoother of the two, and by that I mean
things like legato phrasing and knowledge of words like "crescendo" and
"decrescendo." He knows how to build momentum and alter the pacing of his
playing. (He's an automatic transmission whereas Gilbert is a stick-shift.)
Petrucci's solos don't always show off the full range of his chops, which is
not the case with Gilbert. Petrucci is much better at not repeating himself
due to a constant re-structuring of his style. But I wonder if Petrucci could
write a simple, catchy solo the way Gilbert can. Petrucci has yet to max out
his virtuosity. He's constantly changing and pushing himself.

I think Gilbert was 18 when he joined Racer X. I can't imagine a high-school
senior doing that stuff, but hey, some chess-champions aren't even old enough
to buy soda.

He's come a long way, baby. To continue this comparison in the world of
computers instead of car transmissions:
Paul Gilbert's running a G4 500Mhz with about 60 megs of memory.
John Petrucci's running a Pentium 200Mhz, but he's got 256 megs of memory.

Good point of investigation. I can't hear advances either. That's my only
complaint about Gilbert's style - he's sounded like Paul Gilbert since he
became Paul Gilbert. Kinda like Yngwie. Then again, Paul's solo albums have
been pretty laid-back shred-wise. He's writing great songs, which could be
called an advancement over his Racer X material.

Absolutely. He still hasn't stopped learning. I thought that long semi-improv
at the end of "Trial Of Tears" would be the end of Petrucci's evolution. But
no, along came Scenes From A Memory and that Jordan Rudess guy to really

This is very difficult to gauge. Petrucci is definitely able to mix up his
speed-playing in ways Gilbert never has (but probably can). But Gilbert has a
knack for solid, machine-like runs that don't diminish in speed, volume, or
attack. I doubt Petrucci has Gilbert's stamina, or Gilbert's desire to
barrage his listeners with constant sound. I also doubt that any further
analysis of this on my part would be useful to anyone.

Whoever asked about buying the Chromakey stuff without a credit card, if
you go to the order form from the Chromakey site, there's a link at the
very bottom of one of the pages (I think it's the one with the credit card
form) that says "For telephone, fax, and MONEY ORDER orders". Try that
out, and see if it works.
2.)
Anyone know where I can get a copy of the Music Meant to be Heard stuff
from KevMo? I know that Bahr had it on CD for a while. Would anyone be
willing to burn a copy of it for me? I had the original tape from the
tape tree (god, I'm old), but I gave it to a girl I knew who liked it, and
the bitch never gave it back. :)

If you can't find what you are looking for it might have to do that Napster connects you with a random Server at startup. Reconnecting can help to get to a different server, but it is much easier to use a tool like Napigator (http://www.napigator.com) to select where you want to go today (tm M$).

All of "One Last Time" from SFAM as well as the first ten-twenty seconds of "Overture 1928" with all the "Metropolis Pt. 1" noodlings. I just love it. Perfect. I also like the heavy electric of PMU after the opening strumming. Great stuff. There are tons of cool moments in DT songs.

I've been using napster for many months now. It kicks ass... But I recently started using a better program that is similar, but better than napster. It is called iMesh. go to www.imesh.com and download the program. There is already a good bit of DT stuff on there. It is a hell of a lot faster than napster too since you can download the same file from more than one user at a time. you can get more than just mp3 files with it too.

I got a TSO postcard in the mail today for some reason. Anybody else get it?
It says the new TSO album is going to be released on April 11th. And they are going on tour in the spring!! The samples on their website ( www.trans-siberian.com ) sound amazing.
If you don't know who they are... They are basically Savatage playing under a different name. They got a lot of exposure the past couple of years with their Christmas albums.

So I always thought that nothing, not even another DT gig, would beat the DT / Fates gig I saw in 1995... so I was wrong.
The gig in Helsinki was wonderful, beautiful, more than one could ask for... SFAM works so well live, it was breath-taking! We saw everything perfectly, no pushing or pulling or strange tall people blocking the view. We were in front of JP. Something that caught my instant appreciation (sp?) was James... his voice... *shivers* he's the man!
DT always has the best support bands, at least here in Finland. Think: Fates Warning, Vanden Plas, Spock's Beard!! SB was pretty great considering that they had arrived in Helsinki only 3-4 hours before the show. I saw them in London last fall (kick arse!) and kind of expected a bit more now, but of course a support gig is different. 45 mins is too little for them. In case someone saw me, I was the crazy brown haired chick jumping around in a SB t-shirt all through their set. Everyone I talked to after the show had *loved* SB so I think they will gain lots of fans during this tour.
I did have a question to the jam. It's a foolish girlish question maybe but has anyone ever cried at a DT gig before? DT has brought tears to my eyes before, but this time I ended up crying my eyes out during "Finally free". "Feeling good this friday afternoon... " did it for me, like it has done so many times on the CD. It's amazing how a band can move me so much emotionally! The only time that I can remember crying at a metal gig was when I first heard Nightwish's "Walking in the air" live...
A word about the merchandise. Why was the long-sleeved shirt so goddamn expensive (exactly the price of 2 short-sleeves) and also so "dull"? I was so looking forward to buying a long-sleeve as I already have two t-shirts. But now I bought the black t-shirt with the album cover etc. It's pretty damn cool! I also got the baseball cap and the tourbook ... and my boyfriend bought the keyring. :-)
Ok, ramble off. I'm still too ecstatic to think straight. Meeting DT at a record signing the day before was a great bonus again.... :-)))

Let's hope so, because it won't be sent back to the originator.... I'm not sure if overseas parcels are forwarded once they get here and find a bad address.
Having the CDs sent individually from Holland was a Bad Idea, because you have little or no recourse on international parcels unless they're sent via a delivery service. Oh, well, maybe next year.....

I never order from CDnow cause it takes like 2 months to get here (yeah, living on the sunny side of Alps) and I just can't put myself through this waiting agony :)
