Somebody was wondering about the Transatlantic special edition CD, and I
    ordered
that sucker a MONTH ago from frontstage.com, and it still hasn't arrived
    yet-
it's "backordered" from their supplier, and I'm wondering if I'll ever get
    it...

does anybody know of any other place that I can order this thing at??!
    thanks...

Well... either that OR you just pay more for quality. We all know that CDs sound better than cassettes. None of those hissing sounds during and between songs. Yeah, it might (and
does) cost less to make, but the music industry has been ripping us off for (many) years! Hmm... $40 for concert tickets, $28 for a concert t-shirt (which cost them about $5 to make),
    etc...

I should get in the music business, there's a lot of money involed in it. :)

So there I was, at Jaxx for another concert, still wondering why they don't
have a la-z-boy- recliner section, ready to see Testament for the first time.
I must have missed the first band (darn) and half of the second. Hey, I
have seen these dudes before! It looks like Vanilla Ice has taken over for
Danzig! Wow. The wife-beater is such a fashion statement. Exit Vanilla
Danzig. Next up, Division. Hey, these new songs are darn good! Whatever
was wrong with the old new stuff (I guess you'd have to have followed these
guys), the new new stuff is 100x stronger. I really like the new direction.
Exit Division to the squeals of some dude yelling something like, "Take the
dick out of my ass, Samantha" or maybe it was something about Sabbath. Not
sure. Hey, for you all familiar with my concert review shtick, you might
remember the mating hippos from Dream Theater, December 97 at Jaxx, they with
the flailing body parts and waving lit cancer sticks. They were back!
Homeboy was groovin' for Division, lawd. Looked like he was anally invading
his imaginary friend, but hey, he's burning calories. Next up, extended mic
check heaven. "HEY HEY HEY HEY HEY HEY HEY HEY ONE ONE ONE HEY HEY HEY" x50.
Finally Testament takes the stage. Man Chuck has a big head. The pit
builds. Security brutalizes. Whoa, fat ass, get off me. Wham. Smash.
Chugga chugga. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAHHHH. That's just the first song, DNR.
This is entertaining. Testament stuck mostly to either really new stuff off
of "The Gathering" etc., or played a bunch of stuff from "The Legacy" with
some classics such as "Disciples of the Watch," "Practice what you Preach"
and the like thrown in. Nothing mid-tempo; "The Ritual" never came out in
this alternate universe. It's worth the price of admission just to see Mike
from Division in the pit. Ha. Not too shabby. Go home, happy to have
avoided the wrath of security or fat ass #6 who was barrelling out of
    control...

    Hey Kev!

Good ta see ya last night....agreed on the Division...they OWNED that
stage last night. Once of the best Division shows I have seen since I
got here. Their energy was pumped up 1000%. Matt and Mike were DEAD
ON on their guitar licks. Dan was very tight on the bass. Scott
    sounded awesome.

What (not who, don't think skinhead was human) you heard after the
Division set was "Blasphemy" shouted for at least 200 times before he
switched to the word "Sabbath" I think it was a little pissed that
Division closed their successful set with a rendition of "Heaven and
Hell" that I swear set the place on fire. AS for the lovely lovley
headbanging wannabe moshers....ever watch the drunk ones? They get
about 10 good head bangs before their bodies collapse into spasms...then
they try it again. One guy last night I SWEAR looked like Cousin It.
Fat Ass #6...was that the one I pointed out to you? I think he was the
one who looked like he was trying to invade the guy infront of him in
    his attempts at headbanging. ;)

Sorry I missed Mike in the pit, but Lauren just barely made it thru the
Uncles Division show. She fell asleep on the 3 minute drive home.

I just checked it out, and they have it for $25, which I think is pretty

I never spend more than 13$ on a cd...unless I'm buying a bootleg in NYC. The
biggest cd store here in Maine is Bullmoose Music, which has EVERY cd I've
ever needed to find. When the LTE cd first came out, I got it there. Pretty
odd place to find a prog cd....Lewiston, ME. No one here has even heard of
these guys, nevermind want to listen to em. The costs are great...and they
    have a huge selection.

Anyone notice that MTV is spelling it emtv lately? (I caught it while my

I would say that Daniel Gildenlow (the vocalist of PoS) is excellent.
There are NO growling vocals. But his range is incredible IMHO. He can
be as aggressive as Warrel Dane of Nevermore and as operatic as Ray Alder!
As everyone has been saying, the music as just as diverse and equally
excellent. Both of their albums are a MUST for any prog metal fan.

I think, at least in Andrew's example, that its a matter of availability to you. For example, most of you guys who can see DT each year or more than once a year will not pay 40$ gladly to see them, yet for someone like me, or someone from another country which DT doesnt tour, 40$ bucks sounds like NOTHING, compared to booking a flight, hotel and transportation plus tickets, in order to see your favorite band..

its just a matter of where youre coming from..

IMO, mp3 is a good thing that happened seen in historical terms. And I'm far more with the bunch that says that music industry will DRASTICALLY change in our era, than with all these folks arguing who is right or wrong, copyrights, yadda yadda ... It is INEVITABLE. Just look at the whole Internet thing ... how much it changed people concepts and the world. And yes, wether you like it or not, CD prizes WILL GO DOWN. Yippe for that. I can't stand someone charging 40$ for a CD. Artist? To hell with him and his art if he's so greedy. And no, you won't loose your bread on the table and the vacations in Rome with the CD prizes going down, I'm sure as the time goes by everything will come in place and everyone will get their slice. I'm sure that in 50 years from now the whole thing with music, albums, listening pleasure will change quite a bit. And the kids in that time will laugh at your "logical" reasons for justifying the Napster hunt.

PoS has clean vocals. I dunno if I'd call them simply "operatic" though..... He's got a pretty varied vocal delivery, going from soft whispers, to operatic parts, to the occasional semi-aggressive bit. He sorta sounds like a smoother, slightly less crazy Mike Patton (from Faith No More).

    Dan, I'm pretty sure you'll like PoS's vocals - I don't think I've met anybody yet you didn't.

actually, around here, DVDs tend to be cheaper than VHS. Likely it's because they AREN'T selling, and the industry needs to ween people on to them so they can start jacking the prices up

Actually, since DVDs don't have to go through the "rental only" phase of pricing, where new releases on VHS cost about $100, they wind up being less expensive with new releases on DVD running from $15 - $35. The reason they are this price is usually the production cost of doing a DVD release is a minumum $50K (or so I have heard). That's why not every movie is instantly being released on DVD, the studio has to show that it can make a profit on it after production costs.

ps, waiting for the first DT release on DVD... hopefully a fully loaded affair like King Crimson's Deja VROOOM...

Well, what I meant by that was that the technology to burn them is almost exactly the same - in other words, it doesn't technically COST more to burn a DVD than it does to burn, say, a CD.

I'd take this off list, but PoS is simply too good to go ignored, so if it helps anyone make a purchase decision, I think it belongs here.

Gildenlow has an amazing range, but he's largely mid-range. I would never call him operatic, and there's no death vox, although his voice can get rough when he wants, soar when he wants, emotive as hell when he wants, etc. Like I said before, think of Faith No More's Mike Patton, only not quite so 'goofy'. It's basically 70-minute grab-bags as far as the vocals go. Or the music, for that matter.

Get Entropia. I have roughly 1 billion albums, and it's in my top 5.

Oh, and Clockwork is still together. As far as alternative, I think you're thinking of Altura, but I never heard their 'alternative' side to see if there really was one. Clockwork did lose their singer (who was also a dynamo when it came to mixing things up and keeping the listener on their toes) and they (last I heard) were going a little more straightforward, but anyone who has 'Surface Tension' knows that leaves A LOT of room for interpretation.

    Mike

okay, when using DSL, you have to have lines installed into your house, and from what i've heard from various people, the quality of the connection w/ the majority of DSL's fall far in comparison to a cable modem. with a cable modem, no additional lines are used, and only a network card is needed for hardware (along with the modem of course). Cable speeds in my area (comcast@home) maxed 128K upload, and about 1.8 meg download. but that also depends on the amount of users in your local area. more users=more of a bottleneck on your HUB. i have yet to have a single prob with my cable modem, and it costs 39.95/mo service and 2/mo hardware rental. cool thing about comcast though, if you refer a friend, you get a free month. that works out well in areas with few users, because you can rack up crazy free months. i haven't paid a month yet in a year and a half. also, to get the free month the new user isn't required to keep the service, just ask to try it out, and they only need your email addy. okay, to avoid sounding like a comcast salesman (AND NO I"M NOT EITHER), i'll stop rambling. btw, SMPT:e by transatlantic is so great, it reminds me of old genesis from back in the day in the 70's. such a beautiful disc. l8r.

Sometimes DVDs are cheaper than their VHS counterparts, and sometimes they're not. Some VHS tapes come out at "rental" pricing (usually around $90), with the idea that the high price will force more people to rent the tape than buy. This is usually done with more popular films, and eventually there will be a "sell through" (under $30 list) version released.

DVDs currently are not priced like this. Most of them sell for under $30, depending on where you get them and such. One of the debates going on in the DVD community right now is some studios rumbling that they're going to "rental" pricing for the first three-six months of a release, since the format has caught on. The format seems to have mainly caught on with collectors and film fanatics, though, most of whom will be very upset if prices rise. Plus, these types of people (where I include myself), tend to buy a LOT more movies than the average person. So raising the prices might actually slow down sales more than certain studios think they will. Personally, I pre-order almost every DVD I buy (usually through Reel or DVDExpress), and usually save up to 40% off retail. I've purchased more DVDs in a year and a half than I bought laser discs (and we've had a LD player for about six years).

I'm sure this is more than the majority of you wanted to know so I'll stop now. Well, not quite. Two quick comments: without MP3s/internet audio (to reference a current debate here and everywhere else), I probably would not have purchased about 400 CDs in the last two years. And go see "Gladiator". It's fun.

    Hi, folks:

The latest Artist Shop newsletter is out and you'll find it in its entirety at <http://www.artist-shop.com/news.htm>. Here's some excerpts of passing interest to DT fans.

Available now on our Radiant Records page <http://www.artist-shop.com/radiant>, Transatlantic/SMPT:e Limited Special Edition. Neal Morse (Spock's Beard) has teamed up and recorded an album with Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater), Roine Stolt (Flower Kings) and Pete Trewavas (Marillion). The result is an incredible album that is sure to excite not only the fans of all their repective bands, but prog fans in general! The albums starts with a 30 minute epic in six movements called "All of the Above," destined to be a prog classic! Also included is a shorter track called "Mystery Train," a re-worked 16-minute track of Roine's called "My New World," a song of Neal's "We All Need Some Light," and a 17 minute cover of a Procol Harum song called "In Held Twas in I."

The Transatlantic Limited Edition contains an extra CD with: My New World (Neal's scratch vocal and alternate lyrics). We All Need Some Light (Roine's vocal). Honky Tonk Women Oh Darlin' My Cruel World (Roine's original demo version). It also contains CD-rom footage of the band in the studio and a special 40 page digi-book. soundbite - <http://www.artist-shop.com/radiant/smpte.ram>

Also recently released, Spock's Beard/Don't Try This at Home - Don't Try This at Home is a new live album from Spock's Beard recorded in Tilburg, Holland, during their Day for Night tour in 1999. Performances include Day for Night, Mouth of Madness, Skin, Gibberish, June and the twenty minute epic The Healing Colors of Sound.

And from Jordan Rudess <http://www.artist-shop.com/newlabel/index4.htm#rudess>, Jordan Rudess/A Christmas Carol. DT keyboard wizard Jordan Rudess was recently commissioned by the Helen Hayes Performing Arts Center to create a score for their performance of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. Keep in mind that this is not only the world's most popular Christmas story, but also the world's most popular GHOST story and you'll realize that the composer of this score has to be the master of many moods. Rudess was more than up for the task as evidenced by this delightful and sometimes eerie score, certainly enjoyable any time of year! soundbite - <http://www.artist-shop.com/newlabel/carol.ram>

Available now on our Papabear Records page <http://www.artist-shop.com/papabear>, Tony Levin/Waters of Eden. "On this album I've tried to combine the elements of some of my favorite kinds of music - world and classical - with an appreciation of great instrumental players and what they can add to the overall music. Though the bass is featured in my compositions, it's the music that has the focus, not just the instrument. The bass has a wonderful melodic ability in addition to its low-down function. It is an instrument that can touch us in the deepest part of our body and emotions. The music on Waters of Eden allows the bass to soar above - the lead melodic role is also shared by some of my favorite players. That's what made the recording such a joy - hearing the California Guitar Trio, pianist Warren Bernhardt, or bansuri flutist Steve Gorn lend their talent to the compositions toook them to new heights." - Tony Levin

Also featured on this album are Larry "Synergy" Fast, Tony's brother keyboardist Pete Levin, percussionist Jerry Marotta, guitarist Jerry Pevar, keyboardist David Sancious, and guitar loopmeister David Torn. A number of tracks include the old Peter Gabriel rhythm section of Levin, Fast and Marotta. Tony plays Music Man fretless bass, NS electric upright and an electric cello. soundbite - <http://www.artist-shop.com/papabear/eden.ram>
