    Just so the rest know:

ProjeKct 1: Fripp on guitar, Trey on Warr, Tony on bass, Bill on drums
ProjeKct 4: Fripp on guitar, Trey on Warr, Tony on bass, Pat on

Originally, the plan was to release the live albums of each of the
ProjeKcts separately. It was then decided to release them together as a
boxed set. So these live albums are on _King Crimson: The ProjeKcts_ and
    can only be found there:

ProjeKct 1: Live at the Jazz Cafe
    ProjeKct 2: Live Groove
    ProjeKct 3: Masque
    ProjeKct 4: West Coast Live

There is also a studio album from ProjeKct 2, _Space Groove_. They've
also released a 1-CD sampler called _Guide to the ProjeKcts_. ProjeKct 4
also had a CD on the Collector's Club CD called _The Roar of
    P4_. ProjeKct 1, 3 & 4 have never realeased a studio album.

It just sounds to me like the record industry was taking advantage of a new
superior form of recording (CD technology) and usuing it as an excuse to
charge more for CDs than cassettes even though they are cheaper to make!
Well, I guess that's just capitalism in work. They charged more and got away
with it. If they wouldnt have sold then I'm sure they would've lowered the
price of them, but they didn't have to. And now it seem like CDs are just
going UP in cost to buy. 17 or 18 bucks for a CD is just ludicrous.

Not to mention why DVDs are so much more expensive than VHS cassettes.
The technology is exactly the same as a CD, so why are they so much more
expensive than CDs and VHS? My guess is because of the sheer numbers of
people that have to get their cut of that CD. I dunno, though.

As someone else said, "Alive in Athens" is a pretty good start - IF you like
live albums. (Which I do) The production is excellent, yet it still retains
the "rawness" that makes the band special live.

For studio albums, you can't go wrong with "Dark Saga" or "Something Wicked
This Way Comes". "Burnt Offerings" is OK - the songs are great, but I much
prefer the "freshend" versions on the euro 2-disc "Days of Purgatory". I
personally like the songs from the earlier "Iced Earth" and "Night of the
Stormrider", but I don't like the singer on either album - I much prefer
    Matt Barlow's awesome, emotional voice.

Don't expect a technical prog-metal ride, though - these guys are straight
power metal - although the playing is very good, there's no wacky 12/8
sections. They just bludgeon you over the head with good songs - especially
the "Something Wicked" trilogy that closes the album of the same name, which
is some of the best metal ever recorded. Period.

They're at their best live, though - we've played with them twice, and they
were excellent - nice guys, too, willing to talk to the fans anytime.

Well, I'd go with "The Dark Saga" if they have that one. I think that's
their best. But I really just like all their stuff. Iced Earth is a band
that could be HUGE if they got any sort of actual promotion. I think a lot
of M*t*ll*c* fans would like them, for example.

Anyone know a good place to order the 3 CD version of their Live
collection? I see the two disc one all the time in stores, but I don't
    want that one.

As many Jammers have said, the band seems to be getting better with each
album. "Something Wicked This Way Comes" (their latest studio effort) is
probably, top to bottom, their strongest album. A close second IMO is "The
Dark Saga" (their second to latest studio effort). Their "Alive In Athens"
live set is killer, with a great song selection.

The music I suppose can be described as thrash/power metal, and it's very
very good. I love this band. I know some other Jammer offered to make up
some MP3's for you, which is great. There are also some downloadable MP3's
from each of their albums (of less-than-CD quality, I think, but enough to
give you an idea) from the band's official website:

    http://www.icedearth.com

In my opinion, the song selection of the MP3's on the site does not reflect
all of their best material, but it's enough to give you a taste of what
    they're all about.

    Hope this helps... Matt T.

just me or does it sound sort of muddled? Was that
intentional? Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thats what you get with older magna carta (or should i say non

Most magna carta discs sound awful...aside from LTE 1 and 2 (the 2 being
worlds better than the 1 in terms of quality of sound) and
    transatlantic...
Dalis dilemma has an acceptable sound quality too..

Hey, that non-lethal weaponry stuff is a cool idea and all....but I'm
betting that a few short years after they're approved and start getting
phased in all over the country, the lasers or whatever pain-inducing method
is involved will be shown to be carcinogenic, just like everything else
turns out to be if you read enough 'scientific' reports.

Anyway, about echolyn: Post break-up, they split into two bands. Ray Weston
and Brett Kull (and Paul Ramsay, i think, but am not totally sure of) went
and formed "Still", under which they released an album. They they realized
it wasn't a particularly original name, and so they took the name of the
album, "Always Almost" as their band name, and released "God Pounds His
Nails." Kinda disappointing, much more mainstreamish than echolyn, and it
had me thinking Beatles/Oasis at points. A highlight was the cover of Gentle
Giant's Aspiration (s?).....I'm not really sure what those guys did in the
past two years....I heard something about the Dark Aether Project and Ray
Weston, but I'm not sure if that was a side gig, or soomething else.

Chris Buzby in the meantime went off and joined his little bro and a couple
of others to form Finneus Gauge, a prog fusion outfit that was further out
of the mainstream than echolyn. Some really wild, and really cool stuff,
with More Once More being a little lighter in tone, and imo better overall
than their second and last "One Inch of the Fall".

I'd e-mail Brett Kull about two years ago, and he mentioned getting the
echolyn name operational again, with someone other than Chris Buzby at the
keys slot....somewhere along the line (probably after Fineeus Gague's
guitarist and bassist abandoned ship in a rather messy manner last year),
Buzby joined in on the rebirth of echolyn....

How about Shadow Gallery's Carved in Stone? And the Ice Age disc? They
sound pretty alright to me. Even Explorer's Club isn't that bad I think,
but of course I'm a not an expert. Only Lemur Voice's Insights' production
    isn't really top production IMO.

I guess its just a matter of taste somehow, because to me Insights is one of the best produced magna carta discs (they used their own producer i think ) Youre right, the second and third shadow gallery discs sound alright, although the guitars are really pussied out. (maybe thats just the sound they are looking for though) But still, if you listen to say, LTE 2, and then listen to any other MC disc, LTE2 sounds worlds better. MP and JP have become pretty good at producing (of course, the insight of someone who knows this shit better than i do will certainly be appreciated) . Im just saying that because LTE2 and SFAM sound awesome..

Oh Christ, can we stop this RIGHT NOW before it turns into a (f)lame war. Let it go, everyone.

Al, I'm using a pair of Sprit Soundcraft Absolute Zero monitor speakers, Folio Notepad and an Alesis RA100 as the busniess end of a stereo. Cost about Ģ500. Good little investment?

Goddamnit! This isn't about bootlegs, Metallica always have been (and say they always will be) pro-bootleg. What we're talking about here is PIRACY, and what Napster are doing by faciliting piracy and making money from is is - depending upon how well disposed towards them you are - either Conspiracy to Commit Piracy, or they are guilty of being a Knowing Accessory to Piracy.

Balls. CDs wear out to. I'm sure Al can supply details better than I can; but they do wear out.

Yeah, but who the fuck is gonna want to listen to Britney Spheres in 2007, let alone 2075.
