Timely subject for me. I purchased a copy of Clerks
(on DVD) today. The total cost for me was $37.50.
What the fuck?!?! I mean, I love Clerks as much as
the next guy, but Lord that seems to be two assloads
of cash to pay for a single disc DVD. *MAYBE* for a
double disc, but the Clerks disc wasn't just loaded
with extras. Anywho, anyone buy the RoboCop Criterion
DVD? That kicked so much ass. A friend loaned it to
me. It costed him a pretty penny, but man oh man it
    was worth it!

Everytime DT tours they come here (in Philly) and luckily I dont have to pay

much enjoyment I have gotten from it and will get from it for years to come.

Well, the box version comes with a really nice harcover book that has app. 70
pages in it. I dont know though if these same pages are all in the regular
version or are just in the hardcover. But it has great pictures of the Wall
stage production and has comments from the band memebers and some of the
technical crew. On the negative side, the CDs are not on hubs but slip into
the sides not unlike the way they do in the Pulse package. Hope this helps.

Dream Theater is not even close to being a big 'offender' in the ticket
price department (the most I've ever had to pay to see them was about $30,
    with obscene TicketBastard surcharges).

Take a stroll through ticketmaster.com -- look at the non-lawn ticket
prices for your big summer concerts. $85 for the Black Crowes/Jimmy Page,
$88.50 for Sting, $150 (!!!) for the Who. No matter how awesome a band is,
there's no way they can possibly justify charging that much.

In comparison, the other night I saw Amorphis, Moonspell, the Kovenant, and
Single Bullet Theory (3 "international", 1 local, all metal) for a whopping
$14. Amorphis could kick the Black Crowes' collective ass around the block
and back, but they probably only made $3 per ticket sold (if that).

It ain't fair, it's politics. Be glad Dream Theater isn't the media's
baby, or we'd be paying out the nose just like the N'Sync fans (...or, more
    likely, their parents...).

Except packaging there are no differences AFAIK.
You have that big book thing, where the CDs can be inserted on first
and last page and perhaps the print of the pictures and interviews
is bigger than in the standard Ed.

I bought the big version here in Germany and it was only like 3$ more.

I really think Petrucci played his best solo in his life that night! This is what it's all about - MELODY, emotions. I would kill for a good sound quality of this song. Anyone has a crystal clear sounding LIT? Care to burn an mp3 of TLF for me? :)

I really hate the mindless guitar solo shred on OIALT, I skip it every single time I listen the CD. :( Why did he need that to put on live album?

I'll see what I can do - I have to rig my VCR up to my stereo and then into the computer (or I suppose I could just go direct into my computer) but it should be pretty easy to record.

Is that a kosher thing to do - record something off of a commercial video?

I, personally, dont want DT releasing a DVD, until their budget for it lets them do a fully loaded 5.1/DTS one. I'd really hate to see a DT DVD like Fates dvd release: sucky sound quality, OK video, OK performance (its wierd how the audience reaction really adds or detracts from the overall feel, in the fates DVD there were like 100 people paying attention to the band, out of a crowd that seemed like tens of thousands..) No features.. I wouldnt like this from DT.. id rather have a nice sounding/looking/fun DT video release, than a shitty DT DVD

I just wanted to thank you guys AGAIN. You all but forced me to get Pain of Salvation's Entropia this weekend. It took 3 different shops, but I got it. Very cool mix. Vocals are not to bad. Music is just great. I think this will only get better after a few listens. What is the other CD that they have??? Is it as good as Entropia? Although what the heck is with that Nightwish band? I got a MP3 of a song and I almost could not get through the song. That is some crazy shit. :)

    > >Anyway, about echolyn: Post break-up, they split into two bands. Ray Weston >and Brett Kull (and Paul Ramsay, i think, but am not totally sure of) went >and formed "Still", under which they released an album. They they realized >it wasn't a particularly original name, and so they took the name of the >album, "Always Almost" as their band name, and released "God Pounds His >Nails." Kinda disappointing, much more mainstreamish than echolyn, and it >had me thinking Beatles/Oasis at points. A highlight was the cover of Gentle >Giant's Aspiration (s?).....I'm not really sure what those guys did in the >past two years....I heard something about the Dark Aether Project and Ray >Weston, but I'm not sure if that was a side gig, or soomething else. >

Since the breakup of Echolyn Brett Kull and Paul Ramsay have also been playing in a band called Grey Eye Glances. If you like good female vocals and "softer" music in the vein of Indigo Girls or Tori Amos, then you should check out Grey Eye Glances. They have interesting music (though it isn't heavy by any means) and great melodies, plus the superb female vocals that I mentioned. They're an as yet "unknown" band from Philadelphia which is how they know the guys from Echolyn I imagine. They had two albums put out by Mercury records but were dropped when they didn't generate enough sales. They're now working on a new album and they have a few MP3 samples available for listening or purchase. They're also a good band live, if you're in the Philly area. If you're going to pick up a Grey Eye Glances album, I'd suggest "Eventide" as the starting point. I believe that you can still buy it at amazon.com. You can also visit their website at www.greyeyeglances.com.

    > Oh, and Clockwork is still together. As far as > alternative, I think you're thinking of Altura, but I > never heard their 'alternative' side to see if there > really was one. Clockwork did lose their singer (who > was also a dynamo when it came to mixing things up and > keeping the listener on their toes)

A friend of mine (same guy who I thought invented "Return of the Shredi") was in the preliminary stages of putting together something with Clockwork's drummer. If I recall correctly, he said the drummer got pissed at everyone else cuz they wanted to play Third Eye Blind, or some shit like that.

What pisses me off about DVD's are the people who buy them. Yeah, sure I can afford $300 for a DVD player, but I'm gonna hand you a wad of food stamps that you (meaning me, the cashier) busted your ass to pay for. (of course, this does not apply to all DVD owners, only those on public assistance)

I've got a question regarding the price of an amp I'm looking into buying. 120w Peavey 5150 head w/ new groove tubes, Marshall 4x12 cab w/ Celestion speakers, 2 Ada cabs (2x12 I think), and cables to hook it all up. I realize this description's rather vague, but that's all I've got for details at the moment. I haven't seen the stuff yet, but I've been told by trusted sources that everything's in immaculate condition. How does $500 sound for the whole lot?

You wouldn't have a problem with the government (or other agencies) having the right to poke around on your computer without having to justify their search beforehand? I would. It's also illegal in the US according to our consitution's fourth amendment:

"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."

A country where the government can monitor its people at whim and act on what it finds is heading toward Orwellian abuse.

If you get all four pieces for $500 total, I'd do it in a heatbeat, then turn around and resell it for twice as much. You could probably get about $500 for the 5150 alone, not to mention the Marshall cab, which could go for $350-$500 depending on condition... :)

With prices that low, I'd make sure you're getting equipment that is in decent working and cosmetic condition.

Kick ass! I got the Stream of Conciousness today in teh mail. Are all Prism discs on CDR's, or is just the later ones because of Bahr's problems? Anyway, this disc is great, I always wondered if the played most of scarred live, and they do. They must have edited it down for time on OIALT. Anyway, thanks Dan :)

In other Kurt news, I went to a record show, only got 4 posters and the enw Pantera for 11.99 new, whcih isn't o bad. Its pretty good, as good as PAntear can be. I did score some killer posters:

-DT-OIALT double promo flat (got an Awake comin from ebay) -Megadeth Rust in Peace (album cover full poster) this is evil looking. I always wanted Vic in my room over a cyrogenically frozen alien -Sevendust "Home" poster ( like em sue me) -Pantera "RTS" promo poster, with Phil drumk off his ass in the picture.

Not what I expected this time, last time I went I spent 90 bucks, this time only like 30. oh well. I also bought THe ultra Zone from Vai, I dig it, hes pretty good.

    my $.02

The prices of CDs, Cassettes, and DVD reflect what the market will bear. If they sell a lot the price will go up, if they don't sell...check the bargain bin!

The more that music becomes available over the internet the more the need for change will be for the recod industry.

Option 1: Lower the prices and compete. Option 2: Raise the prices to make up for lost revenue. Option 3: For new bands start with Option 1, if they succeed change to Option 2. For more established groups, use Option 2 and then sue everyone you can to make even more money!

More NDTC: I too am afraid that the DVD party will end. The medium has been so successful and is growing so fast, that once the industry decides that the technology has penetrated enough homes (like VHS) the prices will go up and up and maybe even go through the rental pricing cycle before being released in a sell through version yesrs later. When LD became available as rentals the retail prices shot up more than double. It's so stupid. They're so cheap now people don't even bother to make pirate copies for the collections, they just buy the real thing. But the industry WILL get greedy (tehy can never make enouh money NOW), and then they'll be fighting piracy and copiers.
