    Hello!

I'm going to be living in the Portland area this summer and I'd like to
find a local guitar teacher, preferably one who's into prog, of
course. I've been playing for about a year now, but it's been kinda
half-assed practice because classwork and programming sucks up all of my
time. :P However, I plan to practice hard-core everyday this summer and
I'd love to learn improvisation techniques, build up speed, accuracy,
etc. and I think having a teacher would help a lot, even if it's only for
once a week. Please let me know if you'd be able for lessons...

    Thanks!
    Evan Chou

I don't want to start a war or anything, but surely you must realize that
Finland can never measure up to Sweden. It=92s like comparing Lars Ulrich=

Well, maybe he influenced him INTO picking up the guitar in the first place.
I can say im influenced by John Petrucci, and theres no way that by listening
to my guitar playing you will hear any similarities (although thats because i
    suck ass)

last time we got kid size jams, the system broke down....hope that isn't
    about to happen again.

By the way, a bit of news about Jordan Perlson, the new echolyn
drummer/percussionist (Paul Ramsay is still with the band, and Ray Weston
will be playing bass, if you were wondering)....he more or less has no
"background", as he's of (if i read it correctly) high school age, and
hooked up with the band because Chris Buzby is his HS music/band director.

And he'll be with the band until only the end of August, when he takes off
to attend some unguaranteed music school in Boston.

I sent a few questions along to Chris Buzby, and when I get a chance I'll
set up his and Brett Kull's (along with a couple of comment from mr.
perlson) answers on a quick'n'dirty web page, and let y'all know....the
final version will show up on http://www.amzmusiczine.com sometime in
    June....

I guess the ground lift on that amp lifts the complete amp from the ground.

I guess it's a security issue. The Metal cover is usually connected directly
to the ground. In case there goes something wrong and a powered thing
    inside touches the cover....

Other thing is that the devices (e.g. a computer and other microelectronics)
are sensitive to electrostatic tensions (expr ?) from e.g. someone
wearing wool-socks and a grounded cover protects it.

Therefore I recommended another solution 'in the long run'.

Groundlifted DI-Boxes just use a transmitter but every side keeps "it's
    own ground"

Yes, the hum comes from voltage running across the ground line.
If they are all connected to the same ground with low resistance
(big wires) the loop is avoided.

    ]From www.metal-rules.com:

THE GATHERING The new record is called If Then Else. The track listing is as follows: Rollercoaster, Shot To Pieces, Amity, Bad Movie Scene, The Colorado Incident, Beautiful War, Analog Park, Herbal Movement, Saturnine, Morphia's Waltz and Pathfinder. The band recorded the effort at studio S & K in Doetinchem, Holland and mixed it with Attie Bauw at Bauwhaus. The album is produced by The Gathering, with help from Zlaya Hadzich. It will be a rock orientated album! When asked about the new album, vocalist Anneke van Giersbergen had this to say: "The sound has changed again a bit but it is for the better I can tell you. The guitars are more rough, with an edge, and we experimented with effects on vocals, drums and bass. The songs are shorter, and the album itself is way shorter than How To Measure A Planet? We felt this should be a kick ass, in your face album, but there is also a good deal of trippy stuff on it."

Here's the track listing from SYMPHONY X's upcoming album V: 'Prelude', 'Evolution (The Grand Design)', 'Fallen', 'Transcendence', 'Communion And The Oracle', 'The Bird-Serpent War/Cataclysm', 'On The Breath Of Poseidon', 'Egypt', 'Death Of Balance/Lacrymosa', 'Absence Of Light', 'A Fool's Paradise', 'Rediscovery', 'Rediscovery Pt. II - The New Mythology'. The album is called V, and its songs comprise a movement called The New Mythology Suite. It's due May 22nd in Japan and it's the first to feature new bassist Mike LePond. like i said in the last jam (or earlier in this one), I sent a few questions along to Chris Buzby of echolyn and Finneus Gauge, and he was cool enough to pass them along to the rest of the band.

The main bulk of questions/answers (in unedited state, includes my mistaken assumption that Jordan Perlson is the new bassist, rather than the percussionist he is) is available at http://www.umich.edu/~ahtrap/echolyn.html

A couple of interesting followups with Chris (regarding Jordan Perlson), as well as his version of the messy (bloody?) Finneus Gauge split last year can be found at

If you take a look, let me know what you think. Always receptive to feedback, and curious as to how many people will check it out (me and hit counters don't get along)

i seem to remember something about extra songs on the first album, but don't recall whether there was more stuff on the cassette version or the CD version. I have the CD, and if the extra songs are on the cassette, I'd appreciate someone identifying the tracks for me.

(or, if mp3s are available for the live special edition versions of astronomica....)
