I think that in general one of the reasons I find it so hard to
find new bands that I really *love* is that they lack that great sense
of melody. For me, a strong sense of melody in both the music and vocals
is essential in my favorite music. A musical melody that makes me want
to tap a foot or gets me "humming" it in my head and a vocal melody that
makes me want to sing along. And of course, the really great stuff
combines that with harmonies, powerful dynamics and more. I'm not
talking about a "simple" chorus or something, but rather an overall
feel which combines shorter "catchy" phrases with the song as a whole.
It's all very subjective of course -- what's a great melody to me
wouldn't be for someone else, necessarily. The technical playing is fun,
but it gets old quickly for me without the rest.
I think that their sense of melody is one of the great talents
of DT and LaBrie often adds to it with his vocals. That is what I feel
is missing from many of the prog-rock wannabees. I also think that the
classic prog bands are great examples of knowing how to create that
musical and vocal melody and combine it with everything else to make a
great tune. Bands like Yes, Rush, Jethro Tull, Genesis, Marillion and
so on.
"Starship Troopers" by Yes came on the radio the other day and
it brought home how much I love their music. Jon Anderson's vocal
melodies and phrasing are very interesting and I can't help but want to
sing along (though I don't pretend to be able to sing). The music also
has good melody throughout and then they use some great building dynamics
at the end of the song to close it.
I think that it may be the vocal melodies which are hardest
to come by these days. There are plenty of bands who have the musical
chops to play anything they want and they can often come up with some
cool musical melodies. The problem is that their vocalist (who may
have a decent voice) doesn't seem to come up with corresponding
vocal melodies which complement the music. Often the singing is
kind of stiff or it is rhythmic but adds little to the music (and
doesn't make me want to sing along ;). Part of this may be an
issue of the style of the band, but I think that mostly they either
aren't trying or aren't good at it.
Geoff Tate doesn't just have a great voice -- there are other
vocalists out there with equal range. He knows how to create a great
vocal melody that goes with the music.
So, since I'm always on the lookout for new bands, what bands
do other Ytsejammers think have this elusive "melodic" ability in
their music *and* vocals? Of course, this is totally subjective,
and it will probably consist of people's best-of lists, but it's
the only way to find the really good stuff. :-) After I get some
feedback, I'll list some modern bands that I feel fit that category.

P.S. Much of my favorite classical music also contains great melody
(though I'm not really into opera so the classical I listen to doesn't
generally have vocals). Pieces like Dvorak's 9th Symphony, Beethoven's
5th, 9th and really most of his stuff, Tchaikovsky's 1812, 4th Symphony
and so on all have powerful melody as well as the characteristic
complexity found in classical music. Classical music without that sense
of melody (which includes most of the 20th century classical that I've
heard) just doesn't do much for me.
P.P.S. Of course, there are always exceptions to the "has to have
great melody" rule. I just find that if it does have that then I'll
almost certainly like it.

Just got the Engines of Creation from Satch.
Those who haven't heard it yet ....Joe's gone Techno.
Wow. I went to JS Friday night in Seattle, 5th row center. I had never seen
him before and he just blew me away. The show was live on the internet, so
maybe you saw me. :) Stu Hamm's solo was the tastiest thing I've heard for
a long time. Joe just made everything look so easy and was so cool he never
took off his shades the whole time. He played for almost three hours.

Now we all know that one of the most vital aspects of any Progressive
band is keyboard. Anyone who has tried to form a Progressive band knows
that keyboard players are in very limited stock (they are where I am, at
least). My frustration with this fact has pushed me to the point where I
am ready to put my Ibanez down for a little while and actually take up
the keys. Oh sure, I've always had it in my mind that eventually I would
buy a keyboard, just not this soon.
So my question is to any and all keyboardists out there, what are the
superior brands? Is there even a significant difference between Korg and
Roland, for example? Any and all information will be much appreciated!

Yes, there is a significant difference betwen Korg, Roland, Kurzweil, etc.
The sound. The features, etc. My bst advice is to figure out what you are
trying to do, se what your budget is, and go to your music stores, put
headphones on and play everything you can find.

I just got back form my Cd store. they are a wholesale store of a distribution company, which means they sell new releases up to 5 -7 days early depending when they come in,. Anyway Welcmoe Home Mr. Bulbous (Sp?) Has yet to arrive anywhere. This is the sam company that supplies Camelot, Wherehouse and I think a few other main Cd chains. Then the woman went on to try and sell me the enw Kid Rock, and they best of the Family Values Tour. I went on describing Magna Carta, Metal Blade stuff and made her know her role.
Some guy in there told me that Dickinson ISN'T touring with em. Does anyone know if this is true?

Well, I know this topic has come up recently, but of course, I wasn't paying attention at the time. :-)

Where would be the best and cheapest place to buy Nightwish CD's? And the reason I say "best" is, as we all know, the "cheapest" place doesn't necessarily mean the "most reliable".
After the recent Nightwish buzz, I checked out the soundclips on www.melodicmetal.com a little while ago and was pretty intrigued. I thought the first song (can't remember the title) off their upcoming album kicked a lot of ass.
So, when I find some free time within the next few days (I hope) I had planned on going back to the site to hear the rest of the tracks, including those on their past albums that I found there.
If I like what I hear, where should I go to pick up the goods?

You know, I've been listening to Satch for a long time now, (before I even started playing guitar, when I was like 7, my uncle was playing him around me all the time) and everytime I listen to him, I like him more and more.
I stole that right hand over left hand trick from Satch from when I first saw him, (Oct 26th, 1996...I remember every show date I've ever seen...) on the G3 tour, then I saw Vai do it in a bootleg I have, (but Vai's trick was a little better :-) )
Man, I absolutely HATED the band Tool, with a passion. All their songs sounded the same, slow in the verses with some feedback, usually double bass patterns, then really heavy and a lot of yelling during the chorus. "Opiate" has now made it into one of my top 25 Fav songs. My band just learned it for a show coming up, and I can't wait to see the pits during this....("Motorbreath", "Domination" and "Opiate", one after another...I want to see an ambulance!)
I know I've downloaded a few Metallica songs in the past month or so, and I did lastnight as well, off of Napster....but I still have my IP...anyone know why? (Keep yer fingers still! Dont tel1)

hey jammers, i just noticed this the other day and thought it to be very odd. Track 11 on Electric Lady Land, by Jimi Hendrix is a great song. I think its called 1983 a Merman I Should Turn To Be, but im not sure. Well, if you listen closely to it, the chord changes in the begining are very similar to The Unforgiven by Metalica. And then this guitar harmony starts in, and its the same damn harmony Metalica uses in Unforgiven, only a few very small notes different. Wow, and their going after Napster, maby they should write their own songs before complaning that they loose money off of it. Any other JH fans hear what im talking about?

German 'jammers (or anybody who knows), question for you: Anybody know anything about a band called Oomph! ? A German friend-of-a-friend played a track of theirs for me a while back and I remember thinking it pretty decent, sort of like a, to use a bad comparison, cross between Rammstein and Mr. Bungle. Definitely in the realms of the weird, at any rate. All the websites I've found for the band have been content-less or in German.
Second item of business: The new album by Glass Hammer, "Chronometree", rips. I dug their older albums, but this sounds like a whole new (IMO better) band. Same good songwriting, only now with more of a real "band" sound, and superior vocals to boot. Plus Arjen "Ayreon" Lucassen guesting and a liner-note story about progrock leading a poor soul to insanity -- can't go wrong there. I highly recommend it to any fans of Yes, Gabriel-era-Genesis, etc.
