The lyrics were written by Friedrich Schiller, who is as famous as Goethe
(and a friend of his too). I believe he wrote them BEFORE Beethoven wrote
his ninth, and he immediately incorporated them into the music.

Listen to the bariton part right before the choir falls in. Don't tell me
this was intended to be instrumental only.

Ricardo Testa Sterone posed the query: >Are these YtseJam Digests always these boring?

Simple answer: no. Wait for KorgX3, Bafu Vai, Eckie, and D-Man to start the fun 'n' games again. /me glances at watch. Any time now. And with the Transatlantic tour just around the corner, there will at least be some related to DT discussion. Just skip the posts that bore you. Like this one.

Waseem inscribed: >one could just picture videos of cheap computer animation accompanying >the tumes. [sic]

Err, didn't we all go to the same SFaM tour performance? :)

Dan wrongly assumed: >[Re: Beethoven's 9th] They were added later to the main theme, weren't >they?

No. There are four soloists, and a full choir singing rather nationalistic text in German. Beethoven wrote it that way. The term "symphony" does not imply solely instrumental work, it implies multiple instruments playing together. And the human voice is an instrument, of sorts. There are many Symphonies utilizing choirs/vocalists: most notably Mahler (4th, 8th).

Tommi inquired about Artension's Machine: >Who is the vocalist

Yes, John West is now singing with Royal Hunt, but he's still involved with Artension. He is the vocalist for the latest album.

Dave the UK jammer, re FNM: >very "out there" tracks

I would agree with DMan. Not progressive. I love them to bits, but Album of the Year is not prog. I will agree that they have a fantastic sense of musicality and of arrangement and can be "out there". The video for Epic is proof of that. Still not progressive, in the Art-rock sense.

    D-Man wrote last digest: >Gehhhhhh.

When you wrote that, I first thought you were expressing distaste. Fortunately, I held my tongue until you'd regained the power of comprehensible communication. Good man. Now you need to get the live album Alive on Planet Earth. /me waits to see the reaction when he finally listens to disc 2.

And don't forget that Piazza is also a Dream Theater fan (or at least knows of them). In an ESPN magazine interview by Dan Patrick, Mike was asked to compare various players swings to bands. When asked about his own swing, he said it was unorthodox . . . like Dream Theater. They also included a WDADU era photo of the band in the layout.

Someone did mention this on the Jam when it came out.

Thanks for the heads-up, Jay. Allow me to add to my previous post.

Once upon a time, Alesis made the QS 6, QS 7, and QS 8. Besides the amount of keys, the main difference between the three was functionality. The 6 and 7 were basically crippled versions of the 8. Now that they've released the 6.1, 7.1, and 8.1, the only serious differences are number of keys, and the fact that the 8.1's keys are weighted. I've got a 6.1, and I'm happy with it.

Also, as far as my keyboardist can tell, some of these patches were designed (or, at least, overseen) by Keith Emerson, because he gets some serious ELP sounds out of his QS 7.

My first thought was to rip the CD to .wav, use your favorite .wav editing program to cut the ends off, and then put this shorter file on your CD. There might be technologically cooler ways to do it, but I imagine that this would pretty simple.

I guess that I meant "progressive" as in "lots of Hammonds and Mellotrons and 20-minute songs and 'because-we-can' sections". They're definitely in their own category, and they definitely have some oddball tracks. But my favorites of theirs are the straight-ahead rockers like From Out Of Nowhere, Falling To Pieces, MidLife Crisis, Be Aggressive, A Small Victory, Collision, etc...

BTW, I think it's awesome when someone British calls me "mate." Let's head down to the pub for a pint. :)

And the best news...Troy Lucketta is their new drummer. The first disc is solid rock and roll. I give it 2 thumbs up and a Zhang! (SP? Anyone remeber Wayne's World) Oh well. A tesla reunion is bound to happen sometime, its only a matter of time. hehe. Tesla was my first real concert (I don't count Debbie Gibson when I was 7 but I digress) They blew me away, my life was changed forever. John West still sings on Machine (Artension's newest album). However, I have heard that it will be their last album (since John is in Royal Hunt full time). Please, correct me if I am wrong. I have not had the chance to listen to the album a lot yet, but it is exactly what you would expect from Artension - great vocals, great keys, and all around great music.

I'm guilty at times of asking for private repsonses, but when it comes to bands, I don't think it's a good idea, especially when the band would appeal to most people on the list...

Reading Zero. Think of younger guys playing Fates Warning-ish moody, twin-guitar progmetal. The are independent, tight as you'd like, etc. I find Chris Roy's vocals like a smooth Dave Mustain (no grit in it) - i.e. someone who sings but isn't THAT great at it. The music FAR outweighs any problem I have with the vocals.

Their first, 'The Actual' is great. Their new one (I've only heard a rough mix of one tune, promises to be even better, and the vocals are MUCH better due to the fact that they've really added a lot of harmonies.

Several band members are part of the Perpetual Motion board - http://www.mindcage.com

Lastly, I think their site has a few soundclips as well. I think it's http://www.readingzero.com

Reading Zero is quite the good band. Sort of Fates Warning-like, their first CD "The Actual" features a bunch of interesting tunes, packed with good guitar work and lots of interesting musical ideas. They're currently working on a new one, which, based on the demos I heard, is going to be amazing. The band has some MP3s on MP3.com (and perhaps on their own website as well) which should give you an idea of what they sound like. Check them out if you get a chance, as I think they're one of the better new bands out there.

Oh, for those that might care, Reading Zero is one of the confirmed bands for Powermad this year. Looking forward to that. Well, looking forward to the bands, not the usual complete lack of organization that plagues Powermad every year.

I was blown away by this disc. Although many people have said it sounds a great deal like Tool, I disagree. It is much more MUSICAL than Tool (whether that's good or bad, that's up to you), and much more varied. Very cool! :)

Later that inning, as Mike Piazza came up for his second plate apperance, they played Iron Maiden's "Powerslave." The Mets won, in spite of their idiotic manager, and it made the three-and-a-half-hour rain delay worth it. (Yes, I stayed for the whole rain delay, and then the three hour ball game. I think the beer guy knew me by name at that point.) Anyone (Cole?) know if the players pick that music themselves? >>

I'm pretty sure that the players pick the music to play. Or at least request a genre of music to play when they come up. As someone already mentioned, Piazza is a metal-head, and when I went to see them last year they played Overkill's cover of "Frankenstein" and Metallica's "Fuel" in 2 consecutive at-bats for Mike, if I remember correctly. I almost fell off the upper deck in shock when Overkill began pumping through the PA. :-)

<<Ayreon! Wow. After ITEC I was really anxious to hear Arjen's next opuses. But then in march or so I heard of .... the cast... THE CAST!! Incredible! Dickinson, Russel Allen, Fabio Lione, Morse (!), Damian Wilson (again) (!!!), Timo, ah well... Turns out the discs are as good (or maybe better) as you'd expect from a cast like that. Both of them. Go buy. NOW.>>

Is there anyway that I can grab this in the states before the twentieth of june?

Maybe I'm horribly over-tired, maybe I'm overly-stressed, maybe it's the Hell-Raising Maine weather, who knows...but these past few days, as Graduation Day comes closer and closer, I've been getting worse and worse. I'm a Junior right now, and I *might* be graduating next year. I kind of screwed off my Freshman and Sophmore years, and half of my Jr. year as well, and now I'm doing the big rush to graduate on time. But all aside, I have a very large amount of Senior friends who will be leaving, and tonight at the Performing Arts Award Ceremony at my school, it really started to kick in that I have about 4 months left with some of the greatest people to ever join my life, before they leave to start their individual lives.

I suppose my point is, take everything in life for granted. Everything is so damn precious and a lot of times nobody even realizes it. I find myself thanking God everynight as I pray for everything I have in life. I mean, my parents are the best role-models in the world, my grades still suck, I'm currently job-less, but I'm still an incredibly happy and lucky person. I always think, "It could be worse, I could have none of what I have now...." A lot of times I don't have enough time in the day to look back on the day and take it all in, which is saddening because I have so much that I want to grasp. Each and every second I spend with my girlfriend I never want to forget, I don't think I'll ever meet someone as perfect as her, she's made me happy and she's made my life so much better than anyone or anything else ever has, I just want to hold it all in for as long as possible, but I know that someday, these memories will fade, and regardless if she's in my life or not, (people around me have decided she's my soulmate before even I did....), those memories will still be gone. I think a problem people face in daily life is that we forget that it's okay to enjoy things, and we don't absolutely have to be straight faced serious all the time. We get to caught up in the throw of things, bills, taxes, jobs, school, parents, kids, illness and etc. If people would just sit back and relax for a while I don't think so many damn people would be killing other people.

If there were only more time left in our lives....more time in the day....they just don't make it yet...

    Warm Regards, Andy

Even though the above paragraph was a joke (i hope), I wish there was som= e way to ban idiots from the list. But then again, if that was the case, I woul= d probably not still be around :o)

To the person who asked how to rip parts of a song to CD-R: You will have= to convert the track to .wav using a program like "Audio Catalyst", and then= use an editor like "Soundforge" to trim the track. Now it's ready to burn.

I'm a huge fan of Tool first off, I appreciate their fresh approach to prog rock which has produced two great albums IMO. As for the technical aspect...yes Danny Carey (drums) can play, i'd say very decent. Adam Jones (guitar) has got one of most unique tones i've heard since Mr. Fripp...and for anyone who has played Tool songs in practice or for covering, they can be very technical...I find some tracks on Aenima, especially "Pushit" and "Third Eye" quite amazing...but i agree, everyone should take a listen to them

You can't expect there to be a constant flow of entertaining and informative gossip about Dream Theater, or indeed music in general, all the time. Considering theres about a billion web sites out there and the Jam has been going for many years now, I think its amazing people still have anything to talk about at all. I know that often theres not a lot I find personally interesting, but I have also learnt a lot about things I wouldnt know otherwise- about keyboards, European bands and cultures, recording, playing music etc. When Dream Theater on tour they don't exactly have exciting adventures every night, a lot of the time there's not much to say about them.

    > Are these YtseJam Digests always these boring? My God, I have only been > subscribed for about a week and none of the Digests that I have received > have absolutely nothing to do with Dream Theater or good music. What gives?
