    My first thought, when I got to this part of your post, was Faith No
    More. Totally not progressive, but totally ass-kicking rock. The
    man-made-instrumentalists (is that PC enough to not piss off Steve Z?
    :) really know what they're doing, and Mike Patton really does use his
    voice as another instrument, creating melodies that complement the
    music. And their lyrics are always top notch.

    Others that come to mind are Spock's Beard, Genesis, Anthrax (if you
    want something heavy with good melody, especially Persistence Of
    Time), IQ, ... there are others. I'll have to go look through my
    collection at home.

    By the way, this isn't my best of list (which would include a lot of
    King Crimson and related projects (or ProjeKcts :), but which more
    often than not concentrates on breaking the rules of rhythm and
    melody, rather than adhering to them).

    I'm not a keyboardist, but I'll tell you how my keyboardist feels about his gear.

    Alesis QS 7 -- This is his main work horse. He gets all his pianos, the majority of his organs, and his non-lead synths out of this one (with two expansion cards). He runs it in stereo, and has some really cool sound effects when he cranks up the Leslie simulator, or uses some more techno-y effects.

    Korg N5 -- He hates it, and wants to sell it. It's got some decent lead synth sounds, but the organs and pianos all sound like shit. (You probably shouldn't conclude from this that all Korgs are shit, but he hates this board.)

    Roland JP 8000 -- The lead board. Holy crap, he coaxes some amazing sounds out of this thing. It's apparently very easy to configure the sounds on this (I wouldn't know), because he has created patches that sound nothing like what came with the thing.

    Hmmm, only the first 2 chords seem same, but this is reaching out too far I think. I don't think it's Jimi ripoff ... they're both quite different. Metallica has many reasons to be bashed about I believe, but this is not one of them. :) Unforgiven is a great song.

    By the way, I thought you would all be interested to hear some of the musical selections at Saturday's Mets-Diamondbacks game. As batters come to the plate, music is played over the PA, I guess to pump the batters up to do better. (And it worked.) In the third inning, as Mike "Kurt" Hampton stepped to the plate, they played Rush's "Limelight" (and Hampton hit a two-run single). Later that inning, as Mike Piazza came up for his second plate apperance, they played Iron Maiden's "Powerslave." The Mets won, in spite of their idiotic manager, and it made the three-and-a-half-hour rain delay worth it. (Yes, I stayed for the whole rain delay, and then the three hour ball game. I think the beer guy knew me by name at that point.) Anyone (Cole?) know if the players pick that music themselves?

    Oh, on a totally unrelated note, someone a while back asked about music that had Eastern influences in it. I think that Powerslave might qualify.

    Hi all, I just picked picketed up Super Transatlantic. Some of "us" were talking about it the other day. Anyway, for those who missed it, it is the return of Jason from Saigon Kick with drums from the dude from Extreme (who name escapes me). Not a bad disc at all. Some really good tunes. For those of you that record "in home", there is a liner note that talks about the CD being done on a Pro Tools Studio. I thought that was kind of cool. I'm a Cakewalk user myself. Anyway, if you want to check it out, buy.com has the damn thing for $9.99. Great vocals and guit from Jason (if you liked his past works). A very good disc with god awful cover art. Oh yea, the title of the CD is Shuttlecock???? If you want a listen, their song from the American Pie soundtrack is almost ALWAYS on Napster. If anyway else has checked this CD out let me know. C-Ya.     I went massive CD shopping this weekend, and brought back 10 victims from the kill. I haven't listened to them all yet, so there might be some more reviews coming down the pipe. The new Mr. Big kinda disappointed me (because of Kotzen, more than anything), but I got the latest Niacin, so that should tide me over when I get around to listening to it. Other CDs that are still shrink-wrapped are Jadis/Across The Water (thanks Henderson and others!), DT/THE single, and Iron Maiden/Wicker Man single. I listened to Crimson/The ConstruKction of Light (but not enough to review it yet), Crimson/Cirkus, and Brand X/A History: 1976-1980 already (and reviews may follow), but I have to tell you all about the two purchases that have made me say "Holy shit!" so far.

    Platypus/Ice Cycles

    I hope I missed all the positive reviews about this disc, because I don't remember seeing any. Let me preface this review by saying that I'm not the biggest fan of either Derek or Myung. They're both great musicians, and I appreciate their talents, though I didn't think Derek fit in DT, and as good as JM is, there are about a dozen other bassists that have been more influential to me. I'm also not a huge KX fan -- not that I dislike them, I just haven't heard a whole lot of it (though I do like most of what I've heard, except Dogman). And I wasn't thrilled with "When Pus Comes To Shove". So, I basically bought this disc because I like Rod.

    Holy friggin' crap! This disc is phenomenal! The groove reached out from the CD player, grabbed me by the short hairs on the back of the neck, and forced me to appreciate. This is, in my estimation, primarily a rock album, with some odd times thrown in to make you pay attention. And pay attention I did. Derek and John are, to my pleasant surprise, very tasty on this disc. They play a lot, and do it well, but don't overplay. Ty sounds great, and Rod is just Rod. :) Overall: 8/10. I recommend this one to anyone who likes good rock played by professionals.

    Flower Kings/Flower Power

    Gehhhhhh. I don't even know how to begin writing about this one. I had heard the name Flower Kings mentioned once or twice here, or maybe somewhere else, and wrote them off because they have a sissy name. Then I bought Transatlantic/SMPTe, and decided it was worth it to give them a shot, sissy name or no sissy name. As I write this sentence I'm thirteen tracks in, and I think that my other reviews are going to have to wait a while. The only reason I can see to open the CD player any time soon is to switch from disc 1 to disc 2.

    Roine Stolt has a very unique voice. Sort of baritone-y, his English comes across with an accent I haven't heard before (I guess it's Swedish). It took me a minute to get used to (because I'm a stupid American), but it doesn't detract from the sound overall.

    And overall this recording is a masterpiece. In these first 13 tracks, I've heard a tip of the hat to 70s Yes and Genesis, 80s prog elements from the likes of IQ and, as they tell me, Pendragon and Marillion, and some good plain hard rock influence, as well as a very gothic mood piece with what sounds like a church choir over synths and a rain storm. The first song, "Garden of Dreams", covers the first 18 tracks, and I can tell that I need to sit with this one and absorb it, because it was crafted with care. I'm so blown away by this I can barely think of words to describe it. Each instrument is a complement to the whole, although each player also gets a chance to show off. Mmm, enough writing. I have to get back to listening to this. 8/10. -d

    Just a heads-up to all that the new King Crimson album, "The ConstruKction of Light," is available as of today (5/23) in the US. I'm on my second listen to it now, and I think it's fantastic, but opinions of this have varied quite a bit on the KC list, from considering it their best work in decades to bitter disappointment.

    If you don't know KC, well, you should, but suffice it to say, the guy looking for good tunes that he can tap his feet to probably wouldn't want this album.

    Well, I'm not German...well maybe a quarter. But, I really like Oomph!. I believe they have six albums out. Correct me if I'm wrong. Their first self-titled album was terrible...terrible like KMFDM's first album...if you can imagine that really early industrial sound. Their second was (maybe?) Sperm and that was a great improvement. Following Sperm (maybe?) were Defekt, Wunschkind, Unrein and Plastik. Wunschkind is my favorite. It's just really heavy, and I dig it. Unfortunately I haven't heard Unrein. I suppose I could classify them as industrial-metal, if that genre exists at all. Although Plastik (their latest) is a lot mellower. The guitars are heavy. The vocals range from clean to growly but not too growly. There are three members: Dero, Flux, and Crap. Gotta love that name. :> Half of the songs are in German and half in English. Perhaps they're a cross of Samael, Rammstein and KMFDM and Die Krupps and Ministry. I'm not sure what your definition of weird is, but I don't think they're weird at all. I recommend you get Wunschkind and buy the rest as you please. Their official web site is http://www.oomph.de . There isn't a lot of information on it, but there's a links page with a bunch of fan sites on it. I hope this helped a bit.

    Steve, have you heard Shadow Gallery or Saviour Machine? They are 2 bands that popped right into my head while reading your post, and thanks the YtseJam recommendations, they're 2 of my favorites.

    I know there is a sharp division in opinion regarding Shadow Gallery on the Jam. Some absolutely love them, and some absolutely despise them. Their music to me, both lyrically and musically, is some of the most amazingly melodic stuff I've ever heard. If you want to check out a sound file, there's an MP3 of one of my favorite songs by them ("Mystery") on the Music In Progress MP3 site:

    Their official website (www.shadowgallery.com) also has some more sound clips, I'm pretty sure. Definitely check out the album "Tyranny" if you like what you hear. IMO, it's as good a concept album as "Operation:Mindcrime" & SFAM.

    Saviour Machine is amazing too. It's Christian gothic music, and it's VERY intense and melodic. I don't know where to find sound clips of them, but you can start by checking their official website: www.saviourmachine.com. I was absolutely BLOWN AWAY by these guys the first time I heard them. If you still can't find any sound files and are still interested in hearing them, drop me an e-mail... I may be able to hook you up with some MP3's or something if you have a place where I can FTP them to.

    I have managed to aquire two copies of the Japanese version of the Through Her Eyes single with 5 tracks. I ordered it over a month ago from one particular website and after several weeks of waiting I got impatient, and ordered it from someplace else also. I was planning on just cancelling one order as soon as I got it from either place. Well wouldn't ya know it by the time one copy arrived, the 2nd had been shipped as well. Doh!

    So needless to say, I have a brand new, still sealed in plastic with the obi strip and all, copy of Through Her Eyes for sale. This is the one that also includes the single edit of Home as well as the 4 tracks found on all other versions of the single. It also features live concert pics on the liner instead of what the others versions have(I haven't seen the others so I don't know myself whats exactly one them). If anyone would like to purchase it from me I'd be happy to sell it to someone for exactly what I paid for it. It wasn't cheap though. Those of you that already bought it know what I mean, it was $24. I will only ask for it what I paid plus actual shipping costs(approx 1.50-3.20 for US residents).     I will wait a few days before I return it to the retailer for my refund in case anyone is interested.

    I have heard word that just about EVERY night of the Metropolis 2000 Tour in Japan has been taped so everyone keep your eyes and ears open. There should be quite a few shows from this tour to pick up for the collection. ;)

    Here's the craziest thing. I was listening to SFAM really loud on random play. Track one started and the tick-tock thing was incredible at 3/4 volume. Then the hypno started to talk and I heard the funniest thing. He has a whistle in his nose. You know, like when a booger is just in the right position when to breathe to make a whistle?!?!? Well, I had to rewind the cd & listen again and that is exactly what it is. He says, " . . .With each breath you become more relaxed. (breath) (whistle)." It is hilarious. Then he goes on, "more peaceful and calm. (breath) (whistle {again})." Two whistles on the track. Check it out for yourself. You have to turn it up real loud.     Glad to see you came to your senses. If anyone hasn't heard Tool, do yourself a favour and check them out. They were one of the most creative bands to come out in the 90s. They've only got two albums and an EP out, and they've gradually got more progressive but you can't go wrong with any thing you buy. BTW. Don't expect anything technicaly amazing. The drummer is the only guy who can play half decent. But they are all very creative and the lyrics are awsome. The vocalist does yell a lot, but he yells with conviction.

    - A song about the hidden sins that everyone of us has, buried deep beyond comprehension.

    THE KINSLAYER

    - On April 20th, 1999 two teenagers, Eric Harris & Dylan Klebold went to Columbine High School, in Colorado with handmade bombs and shotguns, with intention to kill as many of their schoolmates as possible. As they entered the school, they started shooting and throwing bombs everywhere, killing 9 boys, 4 girls and finally themselves. This was carefully planned for over a year, and these guys were determined to kill also themselves afterwards. They had no real motive. They made a videotape in the morning just before the massacre where they said: " We are going to kill you all. You have been giving us shit for years. We want to say our sorry for our parents; There's nothing you could have done. This is something we must do. Were sorry, we didn't like life very much..."

    The event is something I will never understand. If something as horrible as this can happen in this world, there's no sense, no truth to cling to anymore. I find there's a great deal of symbolism hidden in this happening. The dialogue in the middle of the song quotes the actual phrases between the killers and their schoolmates during the shooting. (According to those who survived)

    - A rather simple lovesong. The feeling of waiting is often more fulfilling than the happening itself.
