My roommate played me an MP3 the other day of a parody of the "Real Slim
Shadey" supposedly done by Christina Aguilera, where she (or whoever did
it) basically rips Eminem to pieces. It was pretty damn funny. Has anyone
else heard this? It's not legit, is it?

Like most fans of metal, I heard about Chuck Shuldiner and his affliction a
    couple
of months ago. And like many metal fans I was among those pledging to
"pull together for Chuck." And also like many metal fans I have been
belated to do anything that I have said I was going to do.

    Until today...

While driving around during work I saw a billboard advertising a benefit
concert for a local Louisiana man in town. Four bands were playing for him
    and
the profits were going to go for his medical bills.

Since my band, Cea Serin, is still not fleshed out in much needed touring
members we can't hold a concert for Mr. Shuldiner. But I have another
way to bring him some support via music.

Being a metal musician I realized long ago that I wouldn't be making much
money doing this kind of music. So why not give it away.
I already have two jobs to keep myself afloat in the world and I have a
third means of revenue as well. That third part is my Mp3.com account.

I am going to pledge that all profits I get from my Mp3.com account will
go to the Shuldiner medical fund. And the following is such a great idea
    I can't believe I haven't thought about it before.

See, Cea Serin gets paid quaterly (every three months) for the money we
accrue due to page views, hifi/lofi plays, "my mp3" plays, downloads,
    and DAM CD sales.
I am going to take the profits we make in the next three months and
send it all to The Chuck Shuldiner Medical Fund.

We in Cea Serin work very hard on our music just like Shuldiner does with
his music. We, as musicians, give and give to others the gift of music.
Now it is time to give something else to someone who needs it the most.

This will be absolutely free to everyone who is interested. No one has
to pay anything at all (unless you buy a CD from us, which the money
for that will be donated as well). We get credit the most for
downloads, My Mp3 plays, and CD sales. And once mp3.com cuts us a check
for the all those hits, clicks, downloads, and plays I'm going to send
it off to the Shuldiner Medical Fund.

If anyone wants to come by our site and have a look and a listen that
will be great. If you like what you hear, fantastic, I'm glad you are
into our stuff. If you hate it, great, at least you'll be giving a bit
    to Chuck Shuldiner.

    http://www.mp3.com/CeaSerin

If you wish to send money to him personally and avoid us all together you
    can send it too:
    The Chuch Shuldiner Medical Fund
    500 East Altamonte
    Altamonte Spring, Florida
    U.S.A.
    37201

Thanks for everyone's help with this, I hope we can raise enough to
at least make some sort of dent in his bills.
    Come on by at:
    www.mp3.com/CeaSerin

Best wishes to all and thanks in advance.

Okay, I'll bite... what's YYZ an acronym for? Forgive my ignorance... after

    pointed out to me. :-)

For what I understand, YYZ is the code for Torontos airport. So it does make
sense that they named that song that way. Also the starting thing at the
song IS the morse code for YYZ......

I did not see any reviews from the show at Mexico City. Although a little
late I am going to write some comments. It was really a great show for all
of us fans who have waited a decade to see them come here!
I was hoping to hear SFAM in its entirety, but we got to hear songs I never
thought I could hear...... After reading the setlist from The Roseland show
which EvoReaper@aol.com wrote, I see that they where preparing for that
show. Actually the set was almost the same. the only difference was that
they didnt play al of SFAM, they just played the overture, Fatal Tragedy,
Home, The spirit carries on, ad I think, that was it, butthey did play that
strange meddle of Caught and New millenium......
    Incredible show!!!!!!!!

Now, a warning.... I think a lot of you will dislike the songs.... it's
very mainstream 80s/90s pop/rock stuff.... well done, but prolyl not you

you could find either of the two live videos... from 1987 supporting the
"whispering jack" album, or 1989 in support of "age of reason"... this
second one is great as it has the Melbourne Symphony orchestra along with
the regular band.... And, as an aside, it's MUCH better integrated into the
music than S&M.... *sigh* I really thought that could've been good :(

    Hi,
the subject pretty much says it all; does anyone know what they're up to
recording-wise? There's something about Friedman recording a new solo album
at http://friedman.cjb.net/ but the info is dated in April.
What about Megadeth? What's this with the release with two new songs on it?

PS. No need to tell me that Friedman isn't with Megadeth anymore :)

Hello all! I saw this on the jam:

    Kurt M Hampton <kurt.hampton@juno.com> wrote:
    > Megadeth-WTF How could you say you don't like the new stuff.

Simple - I don't like it. It's only my opinion, and it's based on a live
performance of one song. Would you agree that their sound wasn't top
notch on the PPV? That was mainly what I had a problem with, although I
will repeat myself - Al Pitrelli ain't Marty Friedman. Your complaint
with Marty seems to be his taste in music, not his playing. And if Marty
is 85% responsible for "Risk", that would mean Dave Mustaine is only
responsible for 15%, at most, of a Megadeth album. Does that sound like
the Dave Mustaine we know? I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just trying
    to explain my logic.

    > Megadeth did get screwed over by Capitol, instead of releasing their new
    > album, they are releasing a GH with 2 new songs from the sessions on it,

I hope the new Megadeth songs get a proper release one day soon, and
this doesn't turn into a situation like Echolyn vs. Sony.

    > And one more thing, Jimmy Chamberlain played for the Smashing Pumpkins,
    > Thats Jimmy Degrasso, if you are gonna talk shit about a band at least

Calm down, buddy :) It was a simple mistake. I was talking to my wife
about the PPV at work yesterday, and I made the same mistake. I posted
at 4 AM and didn't proofread it carefully enough, that's all.

    Take care,

Just these 2 days he got into the lyrics and analyse them, so we hade a
chat, he was asking who is the killer and stuff like that and then he
said that NOW h eknows why Mike was putting the Kiss mask on the
concert!?! Huh, "come again I said?". I thought Mike was just fooling
around with it on that gig, I just wanted to know why that Kiss face
mask, what's with the Kiss reference? But no, this pal told me, he was
putting it on on some parts only and taking it off later. He sais he was
putting the mask on when the killer speaks (in the lyrics being sung). I
don't recall exactly where Mike put his mask on, but it srtoke me this
guy can be very correct, and felt like a dumbass. :) Anyone familiar
with this? Did Mike did the same Kiss mask thingy in USA or elsewhere.

Coming in to work this morning, I'm listening to Rock 101 (New
    Hampshire station).

They start to run a commercial for their "Buzz Line." At least
I think that is what it was. And in the background, I hear
    "Home!"

They were playing the part that starts at 1:44 into the song.
You know, the cool bass line and either keys or guitar on top
    of it.

Bizzarre that I have to listen to a damn commercial to hear Dream
    Theater on the radio!

By your phrasing ("The second one", "The first one") it seems like you
think they only have two albums! They have several before the ones I
mentioned, though "Projector" is the first one the singer experimented
    with clean vocals.

]From the comments of someone on a previous album, it sounds like he
gave up on them and went back to growling again for "Haven". *Sigh*

Once again, the "purist" fans pressure a band to "do what they always
have done" instead of trying something new. Unfortunately, it seems
that his wonderful croon will forever be snuffed out by more absurd
growling. I can handle growling to an extent, but much prefer
    something with some character.

Any other thoughts on the new "Haven" album anyone? Is there any hope?

    - Dave

    Hi all

one of my rare appearances on the list, so pay
attention at the back of the class.

Somebody recently mentioned the new Dark Tranquillity
album "Haven" and was wondering about whether to buy
it or not. Well, if you liked "Projector" you will
have no problems at all with the new stuff. Most of the
vocals are now clean, which is a small minus point
in my view, but the songs and the music are just as
good (and it's only another 9 days until I get to
see the band together with In Flames and Sentenced -
    sometimes life is good).

And now to the heading of my mail. When you get to my
age (42, thank you for asking), certain bits of your
anatomy which used to stand to attention with amazing
regularity and for what seemed like hours tend to take
on a limp and flaccid posture. Then along came Viagra
to put the lead back in your pencil, but at a
considerable price. Now I no longer need Viagra, thanks
to the new Spock's Beard album "V". What an out-and-out
stiffy inducer this album is! I think Neal let the other
guys have more of a say in things this time, but the
music is still unmistakably Spock's Beard and more
progressive and playful than ever before. Oh no, here
comes another one (pass the tissues, please)...

    stay safe and happy listening

    Hi,
there's some info found at their official website www.kansasband.com.
It wasn't very clearly stated (at least I didn't find it) if this reunion is
a one time kind of deal or a permanent arrangement. Hopefully the latter.
Although said (by Kansas members) to resemble the early work of theirs, I
don't like the new album 'Somewhere to Elsewhere' nearly as much as their
first ones. It's not _bad_ by any means, but I'd suggest anyone interested
in this title (because of liking early Kansas) to have a listen before
    buying.

Korg you hit it right on the head. Christina is 'ok' but nowhere near
Britney. Christina is trying to bring back the hairstyle from the TV show
    "Friends"... heh

Ew. I quite disagree. I might be the only person disappointed with
this album, but that's OK. Personally, I thought (and still think) that
the Beware of Darkness album was a bore. The Light was OK in a comedic
sort of way, but then came KoS and D4N and I thought the Beard had
finally found their niche. It was like progressive pop in a way and I
thought it kicked ass. There was a progression going on from album to
album and suddenly with "V" they regressed back to Beware of Darkness.
:p I have no idea why, but I think this album is about to get filed
away. There's not a memorable song on it. (Even, FW's Disconnected has
    One).

To me, V is simply prog for the sake of being prog. Much less of an
effort to create actual songs than to just create odd shit. :p That's a
thumbs down in my book. Ah, well. At least I know the new SyX (and
    DT's DVD) won't disappoint. :\

Did anyone hear rumors about a possible Styx/Dream Theater tour for early next year? I saw rumors fo this and man am I psyched! I really really hope this happens as both are exceptional bands. I also read somewhere that Mike Portnoy was trying to schedule some time together with Dennis DeYoung from Styx (or ex of Styx) to do a project for Magna Carta! Can't wait for that! -Buck Hamner

I bet this jam will have TONS of posts about the Roseland show that will be better written than I could do, but here are a few extra thoughts.

    1) It was great to see DT put on a special show in their homeland !! 2) Absolutely amazing how well James was able to hold up. After hearing that the night before was almost as long, I was horrified to think what the end of the show would have sounded like. But not troubles. 3) The roadie-dude in the Chicago VIII t-shirt was a major league PRICK !! (Not a bad album btw as I consider it Chicago's last gasp before complete mediocrity settled in.) 4) Who's idea was that "eclectic video interlude" between sets ?? Ahem (not to be confused with a-hummer ......) That video dude from Denmark ?? Was this revenge from the Spock's Beard clan ?? YIKES !! 5) It continues to amaze me how good the older material sounds live. I liked SFAM OK but to hear JP schred to the stuff from Awake, ACOS and I&W will never get old. Is it just me or do others share the opinion that they may be spreading themselves too thin with all of the side projects ??

    Oh my fucking God.

I cannot get over what I just experienced on wednesday night. It kicked my ass so much that I had to take the next day off of work, and I am still not fully recovered. I suggest the next tour T-shirts read something like, "I just got my ass kicked by Dream Theater."

I got into New York at around 7:00 or so, no thanks to a half hour late train, (all right NJ transit), and my ex-girlfriend and I began the 19 block up 8th ave to 52nd street. Following behind were two other DT fans, probably not on the list, but that's OK. After the 19 blocks, we were met with the line from hell. You would've thought they were giving money away or something. Thankfully, the line was moving and we got into the place by 48:15. Didn't see anybody I knew at first, so Kim and I just pushed our way through until we could find aplace. The first set? simply out of control. Was that Terry Brown onstage? Sounded like him. And of course, the set rocked house. I couldn't believe they brought the female singer, and the choir, probably the only time you may ever see that many gospel singers at a DT concert. Sorry, not to be racist or anything, because I am not, but when was the last time anybody saw any other race besides white people in the U.S. at least at a DT show? I never have. OK, they were onstage, and they were hired hands, but what the hell. Just not used to it.

OK, so after the first set5, I picked up my jaw and we tried to get a little closer. I had to have somebody describe the half time show to me and was almost sorry I did. Thanks to my ex for making me sick.

So, anyway, DT comes out and launches into set 2. I had been trying painfully to keep up with James vocally, but not having his stamina, gave out somewhere in Just let me breathe or maybe afterwords. It was a little harder to hear Jordan up close. Anyway, at the point where Mike stopped Metropolis, and apparently took pictures of everybody, I grabbed my red and white cane that I use to identify my blindness with and launched it into the air. So, check on the DVD, if you see a big red and white stick in the crowd, that's me. The caught in alice's nine inch toolgarden/new millennium mix, hereby dubbed caught in the new millennium, was awesome and I want an mp3 of that. Another day rocked, although whoever miced the sax player needed help there, the sax sounded shrill to me and thin and not really loud enough. Then, Jordan did his keyboard solo and that was the end of my energy. what the hell was that piano thing he did? It was totally awesome. AFter this, I had to sit down. The rest of the show is a blurr of AMBI and ACOS and LTL, not in that order, but at that point I was too tired to do anything else but sit there with my head spinning. I loved ACOS, even though JP screwed it up a little bit just before the keyboard solo part. And I love how they made those little nmodifications, like the bit of the simpsons thing, and of course the raegae keyboard solo? Funny shit.

After the show, when I could stand again, I staggered across the room and was nearly decapitated by Rachael, (hey, honey), who hugged me to death, D-man, and Heath, and some others who just bombarded me. Glad to see fthat somebody finally spotted me. We hung outside the club, went back to the busses, but my time ran out and I did have to get back home before I would've missed the last train to Jersey and have to sleep in Penn station. Thanks to D and to Heath for helping two really inexperienced people get into a cab. I owe you, buddy. And of course, thanks to rachael for the awesome hugs.

Once in Penn station, we ran into Skadz and two other guys that rode the train home, but I can't remember their names due to fatigue. Skadz, you are the man, as always, and I wish I could see everybody a lot more. By the way, where the hell does everybody that I used to talk to chat nowadays? The irc room died a long time ago, and life just hasn't been right since.

Anyway, didn't get into bed until nearly 2":30 or 2:45, but my god, that was the best Dt show I ever attended, hands down, and mayb be the best concert I ever seen. Although Yes/Kansas a few weeks ago really did kick ass, and the Boston 1995 and STyx 1996 and Rush 1006 shows were other highlights. Anyway, gotta get back to work, just 30more minutes till I can go home and collapse.

Mike Portnoy, you rock. And Jordan singlehandedly makes me want to stop playing, since I sucks compared to him. Bastard. When is he going to get off tour so I can take lessons from him?

    Hi,

I was just at my friend's place, and we checked out Red Hot Chili Peppers' live at Madison Square Garden video... there was some footage where the RHCP guys went to McDonald's or something, and in line there was a guy who looked *very* much like Mr. Portnoy! At least four of us thought it was him.. has anyone else seen this video, and noticed this guy? is it really mike? who shot kennedy?

I'd hope not Damon, unless that cane and those sunglasses are just a cover or something. ;) I didn't know blind people could be racist. Maybe if someone was speaking ebonics, but shit, dogg, even dem cracka folk even raps da shit yo, check it!

I could see a blind KKK member with his nazi walking cane and his klansmen whispering in his ear who's black and who's not so he knows whether to be friendly to someone or not or training his seeing-racist dog. "Listen Wolfie. If you see a black man, you bark!"

Oh, Jeez. I'm glad I don't take racism seriously. :) -- KorgX3 is going to make himself rofl with the visualizations.
