I haven't been ready jams lately, but I caught the last digest:

<<There's not a memorable song on it. To me, V is simply prog for the sake
    of
being prog. Much less of an effort to create actual songs than to just
create odd shit. :p That's a thumbs down in my book.>>

Geez... thats the first time I have heard anyone say that about V. To each
their own, of course. If everyone liked Spock's Beard, they wouldn't be
    playing opening act for anyone.

But.... I don't see how you could say that it is less of an effort to create
actual songs. Neal's stuff tends to go off on tangents especially lyrically
and a double-especially on the epics. The Great Nothing is actually the first
epic of his that flows together and is something more than just musings. I
think "At The End of the Day" is my favorite song of theirs of all time.

But if you have the attitude that it is just odd shit, then there is no
winning you over. I guess it should have more shredding :-)

V is album of the year, accept that :-)

Hell, no. I love the Beard. Unfortunately, V has been filed for a bit. I dunno. There's nothing about that album that hooked me at all. I dunno why. Maybe I'm just getting old [or dumb (or both)]. But in any event, it will be given many chances. :) Right now is obviously not working.

You know, I think that this album is a jewel. I've heard absolutely nobody talk about it, but I find that every song is just great. I think that my favorites have to be Living Out Loud and Emma (Emma is so beautiful; it makes me want to cry).

You know, though... I have one complaint about Neal Morse's writing. It seems to follow a format a little too much. For example: The first song on every one of his albums that I own (Beware of Darkness, The Light, Day For Night, Transatlantic, V, Self-Titled Album) is exactly the same type of song. They're all up-beat, LONG, multi-parted songs (with the exception of DFN, which is just up-beat; however, it opens almost EXACTLY like BoD and All of the Above opens, with a fade in to a big-bang type opening). Then they go to some kind of weird song (examples: Thoughts, Gibberish; Transatlantic and his self-titled don't do this, and neither does The Light, but The Light is a different kind of album, considering it only has four songs on it). Then to another upbeat song (such as Skin or Mystery Train; exceptions: Landslide on NM, The Doorway, although it is rather up-tempo, doesn't follow the exact format).

They almost all end with a long convoluted song as well. Isn't it kind of weird how a certain composer will stick to a format once they know it works?

Yeah i notice it a lot. I think Neal is mostly inspired by them, SB stuff soudns very similar to TA, but its cool. I bought V tonight and the new Saigon Kick live album. That one has poor song selection, but ohh well i finally got a live album.

Korg to answer your question on the forum, it spans 1991-1996 so both vocalists are on it. Tracks are:

Saigon Kick "Greatest Hits Live" (my ass) Intro ICU Fields of Rape Coming Home Suzy Water My dog (hehe) New World Drum solo the way (why this on there i have no fuckin clue) what you say bodies (some cover song)

Not the best SK songs but ohh well. I though Love is on the way would have been on there and Hostile Youth, Space Oddity, And some of the kick ass songs off devil in the details.

98 Rock played Acid Rain as background music when LTE2 came out. But the most surprising one for me was when I heard the intro to Only a Matter of Time as the background music for a 98 Rocks The Weekend spot about a year ago.

I think Stash is the DT & King Crimson nut at 98 Rock. Back when FII came out, I called in a request for Burning My Soul he said "Yeah! I love Dream Theater!". He has also mentioned being a KC fan before.

And they still don't play any DT. Oh well...that's what CD players are for :-)

    > You know, though... I have one complaint about Neal Morse's writing. It > seems to follow a format a little too much.

One thing that always gets me (I've never really noticed the formatting thing) is Neal falls victim to the reusable riff phenomena alot. I've never complained that it's a bad thing. hehehe. But from album to album you can always find something that was stolen from another song. In "A Whole Nother Trip" he steals a riff from "June" quite blatantly and on Transatlantic, there's another couple but I can't remember the songs. I think one of them was Cakewalk on Easy Street. Sometimes he grabs the riff, translates it to a minor key or something and it sounds different, but is still recognizable. Sometimes it's just completely the same. hehehe.

    Anyone else notice this?

And I have to agree. Neal Morse's solo album was a great surprise when I got it. Sometimes I think I'd probably have hated those songs had I not known who their author was. I swear 'Nowhere Fast" is a song that could have been a No. 1 radio hit. That's also, oddly enough, my favorite song on the album. Emma is great, too. Anyone know if Emma happened to be something from Neal's past? Just curious. I think the song would be even more powerful if I knew it was a real story.

Thanks for the SK info, too, Kurt. Sounds like I'll avoid that live album like the plague. :) I never really liked live albums anyway. hehehe. -- KorgX3 got in trouble, he'd never behave.

Still didn't got V but I think I will asap. What I read were pretty cool reviews.

Neil always said Beatles are some of his influences, heavy influences. SB has a lot Beatles influences too. And Transatlantic is mainly Neil's baby so ...

I wanted to ask ... sometimes Spock's Beard live do some Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young songs? IMHO, CSNY are some of the best vocals unions I ever heard, even better than Beatles in my book, and it's hard to get there over Beatles. :) So I wanted to ask how SB are handling those CSNY vocals. Any m3ps of CSNY covers done by SB?

Again the morse code actually comes for the aviation navigation facility associated with the Tororto airport. Nonetheless the actual morse code for the letters YYZ is:

    dash/dot/dash/dash...dash/dot/dash/dash...dash/dash/dot/dot

In morse code, a dash is a longer tone than a dot (about twice as long). When heard in this format it is the beginning of the song YYZ. That's a pretty unique way to come up with a song.
