Message-ID: <39B75B72.4D1@atl.mediaone.net>
Just wanted to drop a few words on the Ytsejam Mailing List
and on mikeportnoy.com Forum about the Roseland show -- I flew
directly to Chicago afterward for a convention, so I've been away
from the Net since then. I won't review the show much since I'm sure
it's been well-reviewed; suffice it to say it was WELL-worth the airfare
and the lack of sleep and the aching feet to be present at a true piece
of Dream Theater history! I was wearing an MP.com button and an older
maroon Ytsejam shirt, and I started about four back from the barricade
right in the middle of the floor.....and ended up about two back farther
over to the left, due to the moshing, etc., without intending to move.
:)
Of course, hi and hellos to all the cool Ytsejammers and MP.com
folks I saw at the show -- I don't want to start a list, since
I'd miss someone and they'd kick my ass the next time. :) But
I have to acknowledge the kind groundside assistance provided by
Heath/Augie, who provided a lift from LaGuardia to the Roseland
before the show, and to Chris "D-Man" Merlo's car afterward, and to
D-Man, who provided a place to crash (for 3 whole hours, urgh) before
giving me a ride back to LGA for the too-early flight to Chicago.
Y'all are the best! Hi also to Rachel/Wisha, Kirbers, Skadz (who
had to leave too soon, damnit) and a whole bunch more. :)
Regrets: not being able to hang out after the show and talk to the
band; not meeting David Hatlee, who was there somewhere; not
getting there by 5:30 am (which is when the line started forming).
It would've been cool to be in front for the show, and that was my
original plan, but alas, we didn't get there until 1pm or so, when
there were a lot of fans already in line.
I didn't get to take too many pics, but here's a directory with a few
from New York:
http://www.dragoncon.org/private/roseland/
.and from Chicago (mostly pics taken at the Tall Ships Exhibition at
Navy Pier, with a few pics from the convention):

Still recovering from lack of sleep,

Hey.
Someone might have mentioned this earlier, but this month's (September 2000) issue of Record Collector includes a brilliant DT article. At least 6 pages long with full bio & discography etc. Respect! :-) Check it out!

They've been doing pretty much that on THIS tour, even though I don't think they have before. This is because, since Jordan refuses to use more than one 'board, he has to program the entire setlist into his Kurzy, and then incremements (that is SO not the word I'm looking for...) through them during the show.
But remember, this IN NO WAY means that DT is being limited by Jordan's technical choices. Oh no. Not at all. ;)

Yes, they play the same set over and over again during any given leg of a tour. There are occasional changes, but they're usually limited to a song or two. This, as longtime 'Jammers know, is my biggest problem with DT. I won't really start off on another multi-page rant about it, but suffice to say that I'd be traveling like a fool if they mixed it up more. Hell, I see 15-25 Widespread Panic shows a year because they mix it up every night, and they're not even my favorite band. It's just not worth it to see too many DT shows from a leg of the tour. Kind of disappointing that guys with so much talent have so little desire to change and improv. At the Roseland we basically got M2 for the first set and the other stuff they'd been playing recently in the second set. I'm just SO glad that I didn't have anything to do with DT-related stuff before that show so I could actually go in there not knowing all of what will be played. I stayed out of the "scene" for almost two months and I still knew some of the stuff would show up. I could have written the setlist beforehand at every previous show I'd been to. Frustrating..
In closing my bitching here, I'd like to say that I am insanely happy that they're not going to be playing SFAM in its entirety anymore. I'm so sick of that album I might never need to listen to it again. I've seen it five times live now and the ONLY change between any of them was the choir/gospel singer at the Roseland. At the Roseland, at least, we got to see REAL DT for the second set, not some choreographed hour and a half that I could get (minus Jordan's standard, never-changing keys solo) by listening to the album...
Grrrr... :)

You know, I have to wonder that myself. why does Jordan continuously use the same keyboard solo. OK, he changes the piano part in the beginning, probably from one classical piece to another, but the whole sequenced bit at the end? We know, Jordan. Yes, Jordan, you are the man, we have seen you do this before. Jordan has proved he can improvise, (3 minute warning, anybody?). Jordan, as much as I absolutely loved your solo, please, for the next tour, change something. Don't do a neil Peart and never change your drum solo. I mean, Neil, with a few exceptions, is still using shit from the All the world's a Stage drum solo. Neil, buddy, time to rewrite. We know you can do quads at the speed of sound. Please, change something. OK, the drumbeat from scars is awesome, but we have seen it since Roll the Bones. God. I mean, Mike portnoy at least changes a few things. Then again, he is pretty repetetive. At least Keith Emerson and Rick Wakeman changed stuff every now and then. What is up with soloists that they think we won't get bored with the same solo? Ugh. OK, people let's get this straight.
A band tours from city to city. They have to assume that the majority of the crowd has not seen them or does not sadistically follow them around like Greatful Dead fns. If they changed the set every night, you all would complain that "Oh, they played Take the Time at your show, but not at mine.' They want everybody to see the show, and can't assume that people in the crowd have seen 25 shows on one leg of a tour. That is ridiculous. DT is taking one show on the road across the counry, and everybody needs or wants the oppoertunity to see the show. That is how most bands do it. Ever see Ruish change their set? Yes? ELP? Styx? Nope. I never have. Very few bands change their set every night. It's cool when they do, but it is not a convention. I would probably be pissed if Dt did, because invariably, I would go to the show that had the songs I didn't want to hear, or something. i would be pissed that Connetticut got to have Metropolis 1, and I only got Lifting Shadows. However, on the flip side, changing sets would make for awesome bootleg trading. I mean, you have one SFAM boot, you got it all. If DT changed their set, and we got a tape of each show, you could fill up a room with just one tour. At 09:16 AM 9/7/00, you wrote:

DT content: For some reason I've been listening to FII a lot lately. I am = now actually beginning to like it. Strange....

Wow, I love him so much more now that I know he is ungrammatical (or something) like me. I'm always saying "a whole nother" instead of "another whole" or "a whole other". Yeah, go me.
For the guy that's selling off the DTIFC Christmas cd, Dan I think it is, that's just wrong. The band doesn't even like people making copies of the cd to distribute, and I think selling what is basically a special Christmas gift from the band is rotten. Especially for $40.

Yes; and most bands do this, including Steve Vai, Metallica, and pretty much most other major bands use a fixed setlist. They may add an encore or insert a song here or there (Which DT also does) but it isn't really practical to play random songs onstage as most songs will have arranged cues, improvised intros or inserts from other songs, etc. Although there are musicians who do random setlists (Ie. Springsteen, Arlo Guthrie) either their band is prepared for this and the intro is generally a guitar riff of some type played by the frontman, or their songs are easy enough that this can be easily done.

The first part of that is very true. Most of the bigger-name bands do keep a static setlist, but I think the reason for most of them doing it is more related to the difficulty of working with a big production. Imagine if, for instance, Dream Theater had to reprogram their television displays each night to accomodate a new set order. (Personally, I'd rather they drop the TVs for random sets, but since that ain't gonna happen, I'll be happy with the spinning letters and doctored photographs accompanying the music...also I'll watch the TVs.)
Saying that bands who have different setlists each night play 'easier' music is an unfair generalization. Just to name a few, The Flower Kings, King Crimson (certain line-ups), and Frank Zappa all change/changed up their set consistently, and I doubt anyone on this list would consider any of their music to be your basic frontman-led riff-rock. Even jambands like Phish are known to play some pretty complicated material, and they never repeat a setlist either. It's all a matter of what the band thinks is important, or how long/fast it takes before they get bored with playing the same thing every show. There is no "complicated music must keep setlist same" rule.
