just wanted to inquire about the Roseland DVD....anyone know if they cracked
the timecode bug and if it will be released on time, or at all?? I haven't
seen any posts on the 'jam about it lately (nor on DT's and MP's site), so I
got concerned. Private email me if this question is already outdated. :)

<Dream Theater problems have all been worked out, thanks in no small part
to the tireless efforts of Mr. Squeaky (aka Pat Thrall), New York's
resident "best drinkin' buddy of the new millenium", so in Monday I begin
in earnest to mix the show for the Xmas DVD release.>

I hope and pray the MP and JP do this thing WITH MR Shirley, i really
don't care for the mix on the live album. I have some bootlegs that I
actually like the mix or whatever on those (Waldrock, Lost in the Sky
etc). I know that they won't release crap, but please let it sound better
    than OIALT.

Plus James didn't have vocal problems at roseland, so thats a plus :)

I just wanted to get mp3s of a whole DT gig playing all of SFAM.
Preferablly some of the last shows, including Jordan solo (that techno
thang :) and acoustic guitar solo on Thru Her Eyes (Amazing Grace?).
    anyone?

I think I had musical revelation these days. :) At my job I have Napster
so I thought of getting some stuff I was interested to hear and never
did before. After being amazed by the incredible tasty sense for
arangements and solo decorationg on TransAtlantic by Mr. Roine, I tried
    downloading some Flower Kings mp3s.
Still have to listen more of those to boil 'em down, ... but Holy Mary
.. these guys at times are even better in musical sense than Spock's
Beard. :) And I couldn't believe anyoen can beat SB in that! Go check
Flower Kings guys, VERY good music.

Just a reminder that if Dream Theater did do some sort of theater
act or something, that would be the end of any potential they have in terms
of critical success. Not saying that that's good, but that's the way it is.
The Number One thing critics, and to a certain extent the buying public, hate,
is those ultra-pretentious prog rock theater shows that used to happen in the 70s
    and 80s.
In my opinion, they're right. I think a dramatic interpretation of Dream Theater's
    music would be horrible.

I'm looking to buy a rack-mounted power amp to power my Rocktron VooDu Value
preamp. I'm thinking of spending $300-$400. I know very little about power
amps, so I'm looking for some recommendations - and any opinions on tube vs
    solid state..

I play mostly hard rock/metal, but also like to dial up clean sounds on
occasion. I was thinking that Rocktron's Velocity 120 would be a natural
choice, but a Guitar Center clerk told me they are not making them any more
(not sure if I trust his knowledge, tho).

    Any suggestions?

    thanks,
    -Neil.

All that I'kll say about the Roseland DVD is that I'll bhe very disappointed if it's another LIT, only on DVD. Here's a chance for them to do something that'll stand out from the crowd...Even if it's as simple as layering it up so that we can watch any number of angles at our discretion. It'd bge pretty cool to be able to stay focused on JM for more than a couple of seconds at a go, for example.

Someone commented on DT tying themselves down, and stressed that he meant musically not literally. But that kinda reminds me of a concept I used to have for a live show. If the band aren't going to move around a whole lot anyway, this will work: you bring all the audience into an arena, and then have the band on a suspended platform each, each one at various places in the audience. That could be impossible to pull of, but it'd be fun trying!

I said, with tongue firmly in cheek:

    > >I guess it's true then - art is dead.

    Adam retorted quizzically;

    > Not sure why you're saying this. Does art have to be stiff and
    > robotic? Does art have to be the same every time its displayed?
    > Does art
    > have to be 100% planned out beforehand? Or can art be something more
    > alive? Can it be something new each time? I guess you have an extremely
    > limited view of art. Plus, Dream Theater is too damned good a group of
    > musicians (IMO) to be tied down like that. Although they DO tie
    > themselves
    > down in their live shows these days (MUSICALLY speaking, of course...
    > hehehehe).

    Now I say this -

Perhaps you're right, but I feel that there should be a place for this sort
of thing in the prog world. You asked if art has to be 100% planned out
beforehand, to which I say, absolutely not. However, when you write a story
set to music (which, in my opinion, is what Metropolis pt2 is..), you should
do something with it, if only once or twice. I missed the early tour where
DT played the entire album, but I was very happy with their performance at
the Bronco Bowl in Dallas. I ask you this in return, is a movie 100%
planned out? I think so.. is a play? yes.. was this album? I think so...
However, let me qualify myself, in the *dream setlist* I listed, I had time
for solo's and spontaneousness (Hmmm.. is that a word?) And for all the
naysayers to my list let me qualify myself once again.. this list was just a
pure and selfish dream and nothing more, I don't expect it to ever become
reality, just as I don't expect the rest of the world to think or experience
music in the same way that I do... it was just that, a *dream setlist*
played in the concert hall of my brain for no one else but me. Selfish? Of
course, it was a setlist designed to suite me. Realistic? Ha! No freakin'
way man.. I'd hate to hear the boo's and hiss' during that performance... DT
can do whatever they like, and I'll always give it a listen, and interpret
it in my own way, dream about big productions and actors and stuff, and the
music will be that much more meaningful for me.

Anyway - just my 2.576 cents.

    - Tim
