Being a regular attendee at the Orion Studio shows, I
am already planning to be there. But hearing that
    Höyry-kone plays some Iron Maiden, I can't wait!! :-)
I'll dig out the IM shirt for this one.

And to reiterate: Trey Gunn at Orion tomorrow night.

Also at Orion: Richard Leo Johnson on 9/23. He'll be
with an avant garde drummer (whose name eludes me).
RLJ and this drummer opened for KC at the Nashville
warmup shows. I've seen RLJ twice at Orion and if you
like wacky acoustic guitar music, go see him. He
plays this cool lookin' double neck acoustic.

Unfortunately, this is the same night I'm driving to
Philly to see California Guitar Trio at the Tin Angel.
If you like acoustic guitar music (classical, surf,
rock covers, whatever....) you should check these guys
    out.

On the Hammerjacks thread: The City Paper ad I saw
has a web address: www.hammerjacks.org (with .net and
com coming soon). I looked at it this morniong but
it also has little info, but a promise of things to
    come. Only 177 hits, too.

Well, it would be a great setlist if 1) they hadn't played SFAM in its
entirety every show in the past 6 months or so, and 2) they didn't have any
other songs. :) They just did M2 and M1 (both in their entirety) at the
Roseland show. And trust me - the actors and video were, for the most
part, very cheesy. Dream Theater are musicians, not Broadway musical
actors. They need to concentrate on making a good musical show - not on
half-baked videos, costumes, and hired actors. It was pretty cool for the
Roseland just because it was new and different (and was only going to be
done once, thankfully). The narrator, as Bogie put it to me, simply
    "sucked monkey ass.." Hehe..

I think I'd stop going to see DT if they choreographed all of their
shows. With Jordan in the band there's already way too little spontaneity
in their live shows - I'd hate to see them turn into true
robots. Queensryche's a good example - Geoff saying the EXACT same things
to the crowd during every show is a joke to me. Are they musicians or
stand-up comedians? I long for the days during Derek's "stint" when they
would do completely random covers or joke around on stage (Nicky Lemmons,
Nightmare Cinema, Ice Cream Man, etc). Jordan's a great technician, but
I'd say he definitely hurts the band in terms of "fun factor."

Oh, and as for the multiple solos.. I guarentee you that would get boring
after about 5 minutes.. It's a live show, not a clinic..

    Just my 2 cents...

I was never a huge Crimson fan. I like them, but sometimes I think they
need more of a dynamic range... like, maybe some real leads, and some really
emotional melody stuff... I find them to be sort of like a mad scientist
band, but without a research grant (they're all great players, and they're
really experimental, but they don't ever fully explore the possibilities of
their experiments). My first exposure to KC and to Trey Gunn (other than
Thrakattak, which I don't get) was their DVD.

On the Crimson DVD there's a LOT of great musicianship... but none of it
touches what I saw at the Trey Gunn show at Martyr's here in Chicago. Warr
guitar (to me) sounds much better than Stick. It's to the point where I
think I would switch instruments if I could afford a Warr (so much of my
playing is touchstyle anyways, now, and you CAN pick on a Warr).

Trey has chops! I have 3 of his albums, and I didn't think he had shred
chops... I thought he was all layers and soundscapes... he has chops. Since
I first heard of the Stick (92-93) I have been waiting to see someone play
one with something similar to Holdsworth or Helmerich chops... this is
finally getting there (Trey Gunn plays Warr Guitar... a theoretical offshoot
of the Chapman Stick). All of the stick and Warr players I've seen and
heard, up to this point, either play the traditional way, which usually
entails comping a progression and soloing with the other hand... USUALLY at
the expense of one another. I have heard of some amazing players who can
play some mean Coltrane and all kinds of nutty stuff, but I haven't seen it.

Trey Gunn will IMMEDIATELY appeal to ANY DT fan who likes instrumental
music. I don't think his CDs do... the new one is really good, but still
lacks the dynamic of what he can do live. If you have the opportunity to
see him on this tour, GO AND SEE HIM! It's probably cheap, too... in
Chicago it was like $15. Great melodies, and beautiful songs, with plenty
of balls behind them, on an instrument you've probably never seen played up
    close... you can't NOT go!

Yet all that was mentioned was still metal. In any case, there is more =
    to music than
progmetal as you have mentioned. I am more into standard prog BUT do e=
    njoy your standard
    metal...jazz, pop rock, etc.

As for Kev's solo stuff, it's getting dull. The new CD is background m=
    usic and nothing more. I
think Dead Air For Radios had some good tracks, most of which I had alr=
    eady owned in demo
form. It's not the style that's the problem, it's the songs. They jus=
    t aren't that interesting.

Of course, i mean everythings a matter of personal taste. I for one enj=

Kev's new stuff =A0A LOT. =A0Different strokes for different folks, as =

everything in life (almost). Although well I have to admit im one of th=

who even prefer Derek's style to jordan's. I hardly listen to "prog"

heavier stuff (Opeth, My Dying Bride, Meshuggah, In Flames, some black =

etc.) and lighter stuff (Gathering, newer anathema/tiamat etc)
I just feel ive grown out of the more "pompous" prog stylings like lots=

(ferris?) one of the most progressive and incredible albums ive heard i=
    n a
LONG time has been Opeth's Still Life. No meandering solos, no operatic=
