First of all, check your booklet again. Lyrics for Raise the Knife are
    there.

Second, Bix Beiderbecke did not write Metropolis. Ferde Grofe (Grand
Canyon Suite) did. See this link from the AMG:
     http://allmusic.com/cg/x.dll?p=amg&sql=A135799

It was probably a suite with different sections and Bix only played one
    part of it.

    Hey there.

First of all, I want to thank all the *extremely cool* answers of fellow
jammers who took the time to give me some hints about recording. =) Long
    live to the Jam !

In a private mail, I answered Kev the looong story of recording a CD here.
IN short, we have like only 20 bands at most that put out cds, and NONE of
them have decent recordings. YOu know, new market, inexperienced
"engineers" and "producers", with the result of bad takes, poor
    mixes...yadda yadda yadda.

That's why we won't bother contacting the producers/engineers of those
    records.

    >From: "Kevin Hammer" <tufif_de_siks@hotmail.com>
    >Asking how to record/produce is like asking how to play a guitar. It's not
    >a method, it's an art. Before you go back into the studio, find a
    >producer/engineer who has been involved in a recording that has a guitar
    >tone you'll like. He'll (or she'll) know how to get that sound for your
    >band too.

My inbox is still open, so feel free to throw in your suggestions, or just
to tell me how to relax before recording..=)

Regarding Roseland... Nobody told me if there will be a VHS version !

    Warm regards.

    Time for my semi-annual de-lurk...

    Someone said:
    >
    >First of all w/ the miking of guitars, you know. I think the standard
    are
    >SM-57s, which we will use. How would you mike the amp to get the
    maximum
    >crunchyness (sp?), thickness and heaviness of the rythm guitars ? This
    one
    >is my main concern.=20
    >
    >And for the solos ?

First off, I am by no means an expert in this area, but I do have some
experience as both a guitar tech, and a sound engineer, and have dabbled
    in the studio...

The method of miking guitars I prefer is to start out as you said with
an SM57, but if I can I use 2, here's what I like to do..

The details depend on the guitar players rig, but in a nutshell I like
to to have 2 signals going to the board, one "dry", with no effects, and
one "wet", with all the effects, overdrive, etc. This way you have some
more control over the overall tone, and effects level. My preferred
method is to split the signal from the guitar, one line straight to an
amp, into a cabinet, and the other, through the effects into the amp,
    then into a cabinet.

At this point I like to mike the lower speakers in the cabinet, taking
the 57 just a couple inches off from being directly in front of the
center of the speaker, at a 45 degree angle. I usually end up pointing
it down, for 2 reasons, one, in a live setting this helps isolate any
other "stage noise" from that mike, and along with it being the bottom
speaker, seems to increase the low end. Different speakers have
different characteristics, so experiment with mike placement until you
    get the sound you want.

If you can't use the 2 cabinet set-up, a workable alternative is to
simply split the signal before the effects, and sending the "dry" line
straight to the board. The advantage of this method is that the signal
is not colored by the amp and speaker, and can help you get a really
    nice "clean" tone.

The main advantage of this method is control, by having a dry signal to
play with you can overcome some of the negatives that having too much
processing (i.e. compression, delays, overdrives, etc.) can cause. One
of the main symptoms being a "thin" sounding guitar tone

..but of course, the main thing is the quality of the sound BEFORE it
reaches the microphone, if you are miking a $25 10watt Kustom combo,
with a $50 kay guitar plugged into it....well, you know what they say,
    you can't polish a turd...

Just my 2 cents worth, hope it helps...

So far there is only one band that is Progressive Metal in the metal search
2000 contest. It seems that Metal Blade has gotten two death metal bands,
and electronica band and a prog band so far as teh finalists (though more
    will be added).
So if you want to come check out the unique prog band, Cea Serin, that is
the finalist for the record deal with Metal Blade come on by the link below.
They've only been together for 3 years and it's been all up hill.
Every vote is appreciated as well. Seems the other band has been cheating
with theirs (at least that is what the newsgroups say).
    thanks,

I thought it was rather funny, too, that the story is from Plymouth, NH,
where I am from! :) (And NO, it's not me in the picture... I only WISH I

Of the Evans' Neil and Paul, the latter recommended to the former:
    >Consider spending another $100, and go for the Mesa Boogie 20/20 (it's
    >tube).

I'll second that recommendation. I've had mine for about 6 months and am
still as excited about how great it sounds as I was when I first played
through it in April. And it's true, you have to have used both solid state
and tube to appreciate how good tubes sound - this is my first rackmount
power amp, and before this I was using the head of my Crate "Excalibur"
GX-1200H for power. The difference has been incredible. Now maybe one day
when the piggy bank is full I'll be able to afford some Mesa cabs to go
    along with it, lol!

    Peace,
    Brian

I ordered it from Japan (I live in Finland) and it is excellent album. It=
     has
our beloved Yngwie playing guitar in two (instrumental) tracks. The other=
     one
of those instrumentals is called "Enigma Suite" and (IMO) it=B4s one of the=

instrumentals i=B4ve ever heard. I can recommend highly that album!

    Paul, thanks for the recommendation.

You mention that the Mesa power amp is plenty loud - can you still get
cranking tones at low volume? (I live in an apartment).

Anyone else have an opinion on the tube vs. solid state question for power
amps? Frankly, I don't really understand the role of the power amp in
creating the sound. It seems to me like the preamp does all the work as far
as tone generation, and the power amp just delivers it to the speakers. I
suppose it's this "delivery" that can make a big difference, but I don't
have the experience to say how important it is. This, I'm sure, is obvious
to anyone who sees my VooduValve plugged into the "power amp in" jack of my
    crappy combo amp :).

    Thanks again for the info,
    -Neil.
