it might be alarming to see us thinning out, but mike's site brings so much to the table. And now that Ask Mike really works, on top of the other stuff... what's not
    to like?

In fact I was suprised to learn that he hasn't even hit the 1,000 subscribers mark. But it's pretty close.

And there's also the forum on dreamtheater.net, which seems to be pretty popular.

Hell, even james has a forum!

Now, I don't want to turn this into some kind of epic battle, but has anyone considered turning the ytsejam into a web forum? Mike's page has shown what can happen if
you build one, and it has tons of DT info, but it does tend to concentrate on portnoy a lot of the time. James' of course is mostly about him...and the
dreamtheater.net one seems to be more of a "rest of the world" kind of thing.

Why can't we build a similar site...but with the focus on DT and us the fans as a club? Hell, I 'd do it myself if I had the ability.

Yes, there is a new release scheduled for May 15. I
cannot wait - I read where Dave is back to writing
political songs. I also believe this is their first
album on a new label - so hopefully they can really
just be themselves (well aside from the personnel
    change in guitar players).

Personally I like email groups better than having to go to a web site and
read messages on a web site. Email is very convenient.

I think Jam 5824 must have been an alltime low for content. Can't believe that people have nothing to say - more likely =
that they are just chossing to say it elsewhere ... and I guess I'm as guilty of that as anyone else.

    1) Ark - Burn the Sun
Took me a long time to realise just how good their debut was but this is more immediate and even more awesome. Very few b=
ands seem to be pushing the envelope right now, but these guys manage it with ease. All sorts of influences rear their ug=
ly heads - Bjork, Seal etc get mixed in with flamenco and all sorts of crazy stuff - Tore Ostby is a enious and his inven=
tiveness is something which has been missed for a few years. I love the conception stuff with Khan, but in Jorn Lande I =
think he has found a even more able vocalist, capable of mimicry and sublime expression. The other players are all first =
    rate too.

Simply the best prog-Metal disk in ages and the first to make me sit up and take notice since .... I don't know when.

    2) Adagio - Sanctus Ignis
Cool neo-classical Symphony X stuff. Well performed and produced, awesome playing, but not quite reaching the parts that =
other CDs reach. Worth checking out when it reaches the USA next month

    3) Mago de Oz - Finisterre
Cool folky-metal, sung in spanish. I don't know what its about, but it sounds cool and different and right now its giving=
     me lots of fun.

    4) Opeth - Blackwater Park
OK, OK I finally broke down and bought an Opeth Record. The acousticly-driven and 'clean' vocal parts are awesome - some =
of the best stuff I've heard this year. The 'Death-vocs' bits are ... well ... hard to listen to. Not so much because of =
the vocs, I have to admit, but more because I feel no empathy with the 'music' which is going on at the same time. Guess =
I failed the Opeth test! :-)

    5) Secret Sphere - A time Nevercome
Another great Italian Power Metal disk - well done, nice and melodic, nothing extraordinary, but neverless a cool disk.

I thought I should also put in a plug for the French DT fan clubs convention in Paris on May 19th - Appearance by Mike P=
ortnoy himself, plus other cool fanclub shit ... followed by, in the evening, a concert featuring

Regency (French Prog-metal outfit I haven't heard yet)
Ark (30 min acoustic show featuring 3 of the band members as the other 2 are still on tour with Dingwie)
    Pain of Salvation (full set)

Good value for money at 100FF

    Charlie

    Exactly. I don't use MP's forum, because I hate using web-based forms
for things that my email client can do better, faster and easier.

I have never come across a web forum which I'd rather use in
preference to my own email client.

I've got to speak up for ADAGIO here as many of us on the Symphony X list just LOVE this new band. They are very much the same style as Symphony X and that is huge. No other band can come close to Symphony X besides Adagio. I hope these guys put out MANY CDs over the years. Please check out Adagio - Sanctus Ignis.

I have both ARK CDs (debut and burn the sun).... I've yet to listen to either one all the way through yet, but I liked what I heard.

I've heard good things about Secret Sphere but haven't heard any samples yet.

Opeth - I hate cookie monster vocals. It's a shame the band is so good and the cookie monster ruins it for me, too.

    Good thread!

    JM

Yep, I just woke up, rolled out of bed, and saw a shipment confirmation as well! Awesome. Heh, but how many of YOU can say that you're getting your DVD signed by Mike himself? ;)

completely agree. i wouldn't mind having something like a web forum to *also* go to and participate in, but not at the expense of canning what we have. good call JM.

Yep, I was too. :) I started out in about the fifth row of people at the beginning of the show, but I had to move upstairs because I was getting absolutely CRUSHED in the crowd. But boy was I EVER there :)

One more vote for email as opposed to web based. Actually, for this type of stuff, I prefer USENET, but I'll take email over a web forum any day.

I have to agree with JM here, I'd rather just open my e-mail account and read the letters. Besides, it sounds like the 'Jam is becoming one of the few DT e-mail lists out there, so we're UNIQUE!

    My $.02...
