Actually that bio on Joe's page is wrong. I notified his webmaster
quite some time ago and they have not changed it.

Shadow Gallery has -Never- played a single LIVE show. They do not tour.
They are a studio band. So you won't hear any boots..

At the first G3 show, a few years back, Vai was talking a lot, and had
the most crowd interaction out of any show I've ever seen, up until then,
and still, today. If you have the cd, there's that whole part where he's
controlling the volume of the crowds screams etc. It was wild. The second
G3 show a year or so later, he was more quiet, but still spoke now and then.
This show, I clearly remember him introducing some tunes, and talking up
Virgil etc. But his show was more about a dream team band this year than
ever I have seen him. And he had less time to stretch than he would at a
    normal show.

"You misunderstand my point" Scott. :) Maybe you have to be a
guitarist or extremely well versed in Vai's note choice to hear these
things, but there are clearly spots in most of the songs he played where he
was improvising. Having seen Vai about 6 times in my life, I don't believe
he played the same things on those spots. You're talking about "jokes" and
"setlists" and "crowd interactions" etc, and I'm talking about music. And
you're conveniently ignoring the whole thing about theater as compared to
    music.
You want to talk about boring? I went on the last east coast tour
following DT. You know what kicked so much ass about that? Hanging out
with all of the Ytses all over the east coast that I would otherwise never
have met in person. Dream Theater played just about the exact same sets
every night. They didn't have any special jokes to tell etc. It was just
the playing etc. To this day, I still can not listen to Peruvian Skies. In
fact, I haven't listened to any Dream Theater since the last time they came
through Chicago, except for that B Sides rarities disc you hooked me up
    with.

    > I said something along the lines of "he didn't seem to know what to do -
    he
    > was definitely out of his element".

I don't think I read that. My mistake.

    > Wrong Chris - you ASSumed that I want to see "stationary" prog

Bah. Nice. You only LOOK 17, Scott. You don't have to ACT it. Hehehe

    > turned off. The one thing you seem to neglect to really address was my
    point

It's possible. He's human (or at least half-human... I'm not sure on
that) But I'm just as inclined to say it could be YOU. You're human too.
I have ruined concerts for myself because I wasn't in the right state of
mind... I was purely miserable on my first Iron Maiden show because I wasn't
in the mood to be sweated on and pushed by a crowd. I just don't see Vai
being as cookie cutter as you point him out to be, and I KNOW that Dream
Theater can be that cookie cutter and I have never seen you complain. I
think you're picking and choosing who you're going to allow to bore you. :)

No, I mean I have seen the guys I named do pretty much the EXACT same
bits on multiple occasions, in the same order.

    > > At least within the context of the songs, there is often some

Again, I am inclined to believe, hate me if you will, that you must be a
G (as in Guitarist hehehe) to understand everything that goes on in a Vai
set. It's just like how I had NO IDEA that Mike Mangini was on Virgil's
level, and ABOVE Virgil's level, in many ways (including double bass) after
seeing him with Vai several times. Being a G and not a D, I missed a lot of
the complex subtleties and several of the technical variations. Vai
improvises parts of most of his tunes. He changes the way he physically
plays many of the parts of his tunes. Perhaps you have to know what to look
for, or you have to be paying attention to him, rather than the whole show
in order to truly see what's up.

    > On a little side note - Chris, are you coming to NAMM this year?

Waiting to hear from Smutpants (Jeff Storck... the dude I went with the
last 2 years). I am teaching again instead of selling my soul for web dev
$$$ so maybe my shop can get me my own passes... otherwise, I hope it's not
too late for the Dr_Mosh hook-up. :) This year should be an important year
there for me, because I should have a CD done that I can hand out and beg
    for free loot. :)

I hate to keep this thread going, so I swear this is
the last I say. Chris brags consistently that he went
to 3 G3 shows in California. First off, I wish I
could just AFFORD 3 G3 tix in California(i maybe
mistaken, but I think those were the most expensive
tix on the tour) much less GO to 3 shows! Some of us
have lives and live too far away from most of the tour
to make it practicle to go to multiple shows. Second,
if I could go to more than one show on a tour, it
would not bother me to see the exact same show. If
you don't want the same show from the same ppl, start
going to jazz shows or stop going to multiple shows
period. Oh, and remember, it is a "SHOW".

I will be at ProgDay this coming weekend. Hopefully a few jammers will be in attendance. I will be in a Blue 10X10 Canopy Tent - either wearing a Dream Theater shirt or I will hang a shirt outside on the tent.

    Look to see you there.
