Yes I have, my piano teacher has his own recording studio and I've listened
the MIDI on it, I know it sounds way better than the computer..... What I
meant was that drums always sound 80's on MIDI.

Well, Koresh was a bad example to use. The thing about denouncing
somebody like Koresh is that it would definitely be one thing if he
announced himself and also could back it up, but Koresh didn't act like
ANYTHING Christ-like. At the very least, we're looking for somebody who
represents Christ.
*PSEUDO-RELIGIOUS COMMENTS HERE*
The thing about the second coming, too, is that it's not that we're
expecting a flash of light and a blare of trumpets, necessarily. What we
ARE looking for, however, are some sorts of signs to show us that Christ
is returned. It's said and prophesied that Christ will return to the
earth to take his followers up to heaven, and that this will be the
beginning of the end of civilization as we know it.
Now, tell me, even if any of these people who have claimed to be Jesus
actually WERE, has civilization really changed all that much to be no
longer considered "as we know it"? Obviously not. By this rationale, I
can assume that Christ has NOT returned and that I was right to not
believe anybody who has said he is Jesus. Yet.
A side topic along the same lines: My dad just got me a book for Christmas
that was called "Left Behind," and while I'm not sure he got it for me for
these reasons, it's actually a really religious-based book that is,
ironically, dealing with the second coming. Despite the blatant attempts
to preach to the public on how to get Christ into one's life, it's
actually a decent book, and I suggest it to anybody who either (a) likes
science fiction, or (b) is looking for real-world slants on their own
religious lives.
And now enough of that.

That's so not true. With my sound card alone (the Sound Blaster Live) and
with today's sampling technologies (i.e. SoundFonts), you can record a
live drumset and play it back using your MIDI card. As a perfect example,
download this file (http://cout.dhs.org/hyamlxmas.mp3) and listen to the
piano in it. That was played on my MIDI card, but it sounds realistic,
right? (Sorry it's a Christmas tune, but it was all I had available to
use as an example.)
With today's MIDI technology available, it's possible to get ANYTHING to
sound realistic.

According to that latest interview with MP, he said something somewhat vague
on the lines of "between the VHS and the DVD, 95% of the show will be
available". I know that in the live mix of Another Day, you couldn't hear
JB on sax at all for the beginning portion (and he flubbed the ending as
well). I dont know if they were able to get him to re-record this or maybe
this was one of those that will end up falling off the list.
Anyhow, I suppose an uneven mix of songs in the formats was the easiest way
for those filthy capitalists in DT will get everyone to purchase *both*
formats ..... ;)

Yeah I was amazed at how my midi piano sounded through my sound blaster
live!, havent tried that Soundfonts thing though.
Andrew do you know of any programs I can download to record/edit and program
the keys and stuff, I'm using Midi Orchestrator Plus right now, its OK, but
kinda old, it came with my Sound blaster 32, heh.

Although not strictly a "prog" band, they do have alot of progressive
elements in their style. Their first release from a couple of years ago, "In

If you aren't using SoundFonts, then you're truly not taking full
advantage of what your sound card is capable of. For example, if you were
to listen to that song I posted about earlier, you'd hear that this piano
soundfont is a modest 10-20 times better than the piano sample that comes
built in. There's just no limit to what you can do with a sampled
instrument nowadays.

I use Cakewalk Pro Audio when I record stuff directly, and when I'm
writing notation, I use Finale 2000. Neither of these is freeware, but I
can point you toward where to buy them: Cakewalk may be found at
www.cakewalk.com and Finale may be found at www.codamusic.com.

Not at all. I could also compare Jesus to the Heaven's Gate dude (his name

Jews might find their Messiah in their writings. Don't get me wrong, but

This always kinda annoys me... my old flatmate (music fan but not a player) always used to make statements like "MIDI is crap", coz all he could assocate with it was his AWE32 soundcard... I mean, it's like saying "timecode is crap".... MIDI doesn't make any noise at all, it's an interface... grr
some MIDI equipped instruments can sound very fine indeed :)

I assume from the title that the story's about the people that the big J didn't take with him?
If anyone likes the concept, but not the overt religious stuff, I highly recommend the Vernor Vinge novel "Marooned In Realtime." Good read. Concept: time travel is invented, but only "forward" in time. A number of time-travellers find themselves in a future past some point where the rest of humanity vanished/left, rather suddenly.
To drag this remotely close to on-topic, the new Ayreon albums rock. :-)

A-Yup. And speaking of pianos, have you heard the "Concert Piano" or "Dynamic Drums" Expansions for the new Roland XV series? Now there's some high-quality sampling. I actually wish the drum sounds were a bit more isolated, though, as I can hear the snare rattling on some of the kick drum samples. That's good for capturing the sound of a "live" drumset, but not as good for some of the styles I do.

So, out of the blue, some people call me up, ask me what radio station I listen to, then play me 36 sound clips and ask me to rate them, saying that my answers will give feedback to the radio stations to help them build their playlist. Since there is a rock/metal station in the area, it's not like I had to listen to gobs of stuff I hate, though they did play 3 or so Metallica songs.
The options I was given for each clip were:
Unfamiliar Never Liked Tired of No opinion Like Favorite
The clips ranged from AC/DC (like) to Metallica (tired of or no opinion) to pearl jam (Better Man -- TIRED OF) to even some old Def Leppard (had to give that a Like) -- The only Favorites I gave out were for Rush (Closer to the Heart) and Tool (46 and 2)
Well, here's hoping I can improve the local radio scene. Anybody else ever get one of these?

Well, a good place to start would be Creative's website (www.sblive.com). There you can at least learn the basics about soundfonts and how they're used. The piano soundfont I got is actually part of a MUCH larger font called Fluid. I had to hack Fluid using the Vienna SoundFont Studio (also found at sblive.com) because Fluid can only be used if you have 256 MB of RAM or greater.
Probably the easiest way to learn about how to use a SoundFont would be to go to someplace like Altavista and type "How do I learn how to use a SoundFont?" I know it sounds corny, but it works. :)
Oh, and you can find the Fluid font at www.hammersound.net under the "Sounds" tab on the upper left, and then in "SoundFont Library", and finally under "Collections" (toward the bottom of the list). You might have to sift through a few of the other listings before finding it, but it's well worth it just for that piano sample alone.
Now if only I had enough system memory, I'd do an entire band lineup of great samples, but I have yet to hear a good distorted guitar sample. Oh well, maybe I can get JP to do a whole 128 MB font based on the different sounds in his battery alone! Heh.

hummm, using the disk writer plugin seems not work in my winamp v2.666... am i doing something wrong? have you tested that way? it woould be very interesting, because it will make the pauses between songs, and if i have to record the sound with my recorder, i should pause it at the final of every song ...

Ecliptica is good album and extremely good for a debut but Successor wasn't as good as I was hoping for. Live tracks on that disc were awful and new songs weren't very good either. They most certainly have potential but I hope they're next album is bit more experimental.
