How many die-hard VH fans like Balance? I think it's their best album ever, but
sales weren't so great. OU812 is right up there too, but I only like In And Out
and Poundcake on F.U.C.K. And, for that matter, do occasional VH fans like
Balance? I know Derek always lists the first 5 VH albums as his greatest
influence, but let's face it, Diver Down is, to put it mildly, not their best
    work.

Cairo: Prog Rock with lots of keyboards, reminiscent of ELP with
guitars. No heavy distortion, double bass or traditional "metal"
elements. I think of them as ELP crossed with early Asia (especially in
    the vocals)

Ice Age: Prog Metal with a very Styx-esque dramatic flair. Keyboard solos,
intrumental random riffage, chicken samples, high but full (i.e. not thin
and whiny) vocals with lots of vibrato.

Got em both, like em both, but I end up listening to Ice Age more. Which
is best for you depends more on what you like.

    Hi,

My collegaue has an excerpt of 'Home' as default ring on his 3310. Must have
been very difficult to write it, but it makes me smile every time I hear it
    ringin'.

    Hi there!!

Well, we are all prog-fans, aren't we? And many of you know a lot about
    composing music, don't you?

So, why can't we all make an effort and create some good melodies for our
mobile phones? I'm tired of hearing "Livin' la vida loca" or "In the navy"
when I walk along the street. Or, what is worse, a song from a spanish
"singer", the worst I've ever listened to (Julio will definitely know of
    whom I'm talking about....).

I'd really love having a melody which fitted my personality and my (our)
tastes. But I can't find any good rock melody for my Nokia 3210.

Then, why don't you experts try to develop some good melodies? Or some
impressive graphics? It would be a real pleasure having a DT logo and/or a
piece of a famous rhyme in my phone. Don't you think so?

Well, please, at least think about it.

I always thought the piano intro to Wait For Sleep
would make a great melody for a cell phone...

.and on the Douglas Adams discussion, it really
doesn't surprise me that Prog fans would be Adams
    fans.
In fact, it seems almost fitting, somehow...

Has everyone heard that he plays in G-n-R now? Like that's going to

VH-Loved Sammy years, but his solo stuff since, blows.
Loved the idea of Gary in VH, but I think III suffered from
bad song writing. The concert was very good.

Cairo concentrates on the keyboards as the lead instrument,
kind of in the style of ELP but with fewer good melodies (though they
have an occasional good melody such as in "Silent Winter"). The CD
has some pretty cool keyboard work here and there. Overall, their sound
is fairly light. I think I'd like them better if their vocals would
improve. The vocalist just doesn't do much for me -- he has a mid-
to high-pitched voice and it comes across as a fairly soft delivery
most of the time. He occasionaly adds a bit more power (again in
"Silent Winter") which helps but it's not quite enough.
Ice Age has a somewhat heavier sound with more use of guitar
and a somewhat darker keyboard sound. The keyboard isn't used as a
lead instrument as often as on the Cairo CD. They are a bit closer in
sound to DT than Cairo, due to the melding of the keyboards and
guitar (don't expect DT here though). Their vocalist could also
be better, but I think I prefer him to Cairo's vocalist. He sings
with a bit more emotion and has a bit more of a typical prog-metal
singing style (which I'm not all that fond of really). He doesn't
try to get too annoyingly operatic or scream too much though which
is good. The songs on this CD start sounding a bit the same after
a while, and none really stand out as a classic, but it's pretty
    good overall.
            All IMHO of course. :)

Yeah, I remember playing that on an Apple IIe. The Infocom games
were always fun, though frustrating at times. I never was able to get
past being on the ship and on that boat on the planet. It seemed like
it was a dead-end at that point.
What games do you program? Having played EverQuest quite a
bit I've wondered what it would be like to work on a massively multi-
player game like that. I do network programming for a living and
thought it would be cool to see how games like EQ handle optimizing
    the networking stuff.
Any other EQ players out there?

    Hey guys!

Didn't anyone here (apart from myself) go to the Ernie Ball Music Man All
Star Jam with John Petrucci, Steve Morse and Tony Levin (using his funk
fingers) etc, at the Coach House in San Luis Capistrano last Friday night? I
imagined (obviously) that there would be at least a few of you trying to
outdo each other with your reviews on that event ... ;-)

The newer version of the Infocom stuff (like the one I had) had a help
tips program built in. All you had to do was type hints or help and it
would pop up a window. Conversely, you could type HINTS OFF and it
wouldn't help you at all, which is good for people with no self-control.
:) I myself was never very good at the game so I used the help feature a
    lot.

I havn't heard Cairo, so I won't even mention it...

but I recommend Ice Age! I think this one is a really great CD, and I am
(and have been for a while) looking forward to their next release, which
    will be sometime this year.

IMO, there is no bad song on TGD, all the tracks are really great! My
favourites off the album are 'Ice Age' (a really good 10-minutes piece),
'Because Of You' and the instrumental 'Spare Chicken Parts' (notice the
sample from 2001: A Space Odyssey!)

    Greetings ye 'jamanoids...

    KorgX3 remarked:

They weren't just stories, either. During the "III Sides" tour (front row
seats, what a great show that was), the sound guy managed to lose mic
amplification during part of "Decadence Dance", so Gary just cranked up his
volume a bit more until he was audible again. Great set of pipes on that
guy, and an excellent frontman too.

    ryften inquired:

    > Ice Age "The Great Divide"
    > Cairo "Cairo"

As far as I'm concerned you can't go wrong with either disc. Depends on how
    you like your prog.

Cairo is built around the epic songwriting and virtuoso
keyboard/synth/piano/Hammond organ work of the multitalented Mark
Robertson, one of the best writers and keyboardists on the planet. His
Emerson influences are very obvious (bits of "The Ruins at Avalon's Gate"
sound like they were ripped off from "Tarkus", but MAN can that guy play.
And there are so many layers of keyboards that you'll hear something new
every time you listen to the disc. Guitars, bass, and drums are all
competent, but Robertson is the real standout. Vocalist Bret Douglas
irritates some people, but I think he's quite solid. High tenor voice with
very little vibrato. If there is a complaint about this band it's usually
that the songs can tend to wander a bit, musically (there are six tunes on
the first disc, and if I remember right only one of them is less than 10
minutes long). Epic stuff, in other words. Obvious influences: Yes, ELP.

Ice Age is more of a prog metal band than prog rock. The music is a lot
heavier, with blistering guitars and a crunching rhythm section. It's
difficult to pick out which of the four members is the most talented -- Hal
Aponte on drums gives Portnoy a run for his money with complex rhythms,
while Arron DiCesare on bass keeps a nimble and powerful low end going,
Jimmy Pappas (guitars) tosses off intricate solos and crunchy rhythm work,
and Josh Pincus's soaring vocals and tasteful keyboards float over it all.
Pincus has an incredible voice, somewhat reminiscent of the fellows in
Styx, but powerful as hell and with his own unique stamp. Fantastic vocals.
The band does occasionally fall into the trap of "complex music for complex
music's sake" but for the most part they write impeccably tight stuff.
    Obvious influences: Dream Theater, Styx.

Honestly, I think both bands are worth listening to. Both of them are now
in the studio working on their next releases, and I'll be picking up both
when they come out. As always, your mileage may vary.

    cheers,
    Phil
