When I got my Nokia cell phone, I found a number of Dream Theater-related
rings, most of which didn't sound good. My phone seemed to have some kind
of problem playing the rings with the right tempo... they'd sound good out
of my PC speaker (using a special program designed to help with that) but
sounded awful out of the phone.

So, I put a little bit of "Space-Dye Vest" into the Nokia format and got it
to work. It works well, except it's a little weird to hear that when I get
a call. Still, it beats the thousandth phone playing "Ode to Joy"... :-P

Is it really worth worrying and ranting about so called music that you don't like.
Why bother, if ppl like that all well and good.

On another note altogether, the new Opeth is mind blowing, extreme progressive metal
    at it's best.

Here's what I can contribute. Cairo is not metal, they are more of a
keyboard oriented prog, modernized ELP type thing, where as Ice AGe is a
harder styx meets Kansas type deal. If you like harder edge music, go with
Ice AGe. If you are more into prog, either of these CDs will suit you.

Graham, Has it been released yet?? What's the title of the album?

I was speaking to Chris from Vanishing Point the other day and apparently there will be some dates in Sydney coming up very soon. They will be probably doing some shows with Dungeon.

Hey All-- I'm still not believing that this hasn't been discussed on the jam recently. Avantasia is the big monstrous epic massive metal opera side project of Edguy's Tobias Sammet, and is probably the best power metal album I've ever heard. Absolutely mindboggling in my book. If you like fast, melodic metal with huge choirs, sweeping arrangements, big choruses, classical orchestration, and a neato story (not to mention people such as, oh, say, Michael Kiske, Timo Tolkki, Andre Matos, and Kai Hansen among many others), do yourself the biggest favor of the year and GET THIS NOW. I cannot rave enough about this disc...and it's only part one in a 2-CD set (second to be released later)!

In other news, less than a month 'till ProgPower--WOO-HOO!!!

Hi guys, thanks for all the great info!

Could I grill you a bit more though? :)

    > Look at the THD (total harmonic distortion) which should be as small as possible.

Some of the good Denons list the THD as 0.05%. That's good, right?

    > DD and DTS kick major ass. Movies in my house sound far better than they > do in most theaters. Definatly get a reciever with both.

I definitely agree here. My current receiver (Nakamichi AV500) supports DD5.1 (it doesn't have the decoder, but my DVD player does) and movies in DD5.1 do kick all kinds of ass.

    > The second most important bit of advice on this subject is to pick > -speakers- first. The differences between the sound of various speakers > will completely swamp the differences between amps or processors or CD/DVD > players.

Well, I've currently got all Jamo surround-sound speakers (except for my sub, which is an Acoustic Research). The Jamo's seem to be pretty good speakers, IMO.

    > > An ohm is a measurement of resistance. Normal home speakers are > > generally 8 ohms. > Speaker impedances vary wildly, though. Mine are "nominal 8 ohms", but > > they dip to 2.5 ohms at one freqency in the bass region.

OK, my speakers are listed as 8 ohms also.

Here's a question I have about my speakers. The backs of my Jamo speakers list the "Long Term Power" and "Short Term Power". The two front towers list the long/short term power as 200 W and 300 W. My center channel speaker says 70 W and 100 W My rear surrounds say 50 W and 70 W. Does this mean that I can't hook up a receiver that puts out more watts than the above numbers (like the Denon below)???????

Lastly, if I print the specs to the Denon 3801, could you guys give me an idea if this all sounds pretty good? DENON AVR-3801 Dolby Digital & DTS ES Discrete 6.1 A/V Receiver . DTS Extended Surround Discrete 6.1 decoding . DTS Extended Surround Matrix 6.1 decoding . DTS Neo:6 Cinema & Music Surround decoding . Dolby Digital decoding, including Matrix 6.1 decoding . DDSC-Digital featuring Analog Devices SHARC 32 bit floating point DSP processor . 7 Channels equal power amplifier section . 105 watts per channel (8 ohms, 20 Hz-20 kHz, <.05%THD) . 140 watts per channel (6 ohms, 1 kHz, <.7%THD) . Analog Devices 24 bit, 96 kHz high resolution DACs on all eight channels . Real 24 bit, 96 kHz Digital Interface Receiver . 2 sets component video inputs, compatible with wideband (480p, 720p, 1080i) response for progressive DVD, DTV . 5 sets composite and "S" video inputs . 7.1 external wide bandwidth (100 kHz) input for future multi-channel formats (such as DVD-Audio) . 5 & 7 Channel Stereo . Personal Memory Plus . 4 assignable digital inputs . Optical digital output . 9 analog inputs including built-in AM/FM tuner . Multi-Zone 1 stereo pre-amp level audio outputs, fixed or variable level . Power Amplifier Assign function, lets you assign 2 of the 7 amp channels to drive second zone speakers directly . Thanks everybody for all your advice!! :)

And on your voice mail message you can have; "You won't find me here, so call another day..."

I guess I'm one of the few who likes the crazy sick stuff buckethead does. I've only heard one album of his, but I love all the "101 useless licks". When I want something with a nice meledy and tasteful playing, I listen to ..... well i really don't listen to a lot of that!

I too have a great love for Balance (exceeded, controversially, only by my love for VH II). I can see why prog people would like it, it has a lot of interesting arrangements and is much more interesting texturally than other VH IMO. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.

A friend of mine has a Ytsejam ringtone (took him ages) and it sounds cool. Only problem with Wait for Sleep intro is that all the monkeys would think it was Tubular Bells.

Working on the main bass riff for Xanadu though... Cool.

Bas, why would you want to leave the list? Is the conversation not what you were looking for? Has someone said something wrong? Just curious.

I found a bunch of good ring tones here: http://www.mobile-melodies.com/ Not too much from Rush and none from DT (so if you make any of these upload them here).
