Quick question. Can anyone guide me as to how to actually do this,
what Nokia models this is possible on, and whether this is available in
the States or not. I know a while back, the only phone that were able to
do this were available in Europe.

    Any websites as well?

    Thanks,

    Al

Hey does anyone happen to have both these cds?

    Reason-Man & Machine
    Threshold-Decadent

The reason I ask is that they have exactly the same cover!
As far as I know, the bands are unrelated, Reason is from Seattle,
Threshold from England. They both were released in 1999.
Maybe it's just a stock photo.

Does anyone know of any others cd/albums covers that are the same?

You know, I'm not exactly sure why we don't use the terms Mobile. I use
it a lot more since I worked with a woman from Ireland this summer and she
used it all the time. It sort of worked its way into my vocabulary. :)

As for the term cell phone, I believe that the term 'cellular' refers to
something about the method used to trasmit the analog signals in old
phones. I believe that it used a 'cell' of broadcast bandwidth to talk
on, which is why it was so easy to listen in to conversations, since we're
just talking about radio waves, more or less.

I'm not sure about that, though.

I was at a Steve Vai concert last year, and at one point during the
show a guy from backstage came on and asked us all to ensure our "cell
phones" were turned off since the show was being recorded. It took us
all a while to work out what he was talking about. :-)

In America, we use the term Cellular Phone because the way the network of towers is setup, each area is a "cell" that provides coverage for the cell phones. Towers are setup all over cities and they provide signal strength for a number of MILES (yes, Miles.. we hate the Metric system :) Therefore, the mobile phones are also known as cellular, or cell phones.

My phone can record audio for keeping memos and stuff, but the same feature lets you save your recorded sounds as rings. I could have it play anything I want! Perhaps the Mirror intro would be cool...

Rule of thumb is less-than-or-equal-to 0.1%. Hearing less than that puts you in the realm of the extrordinarily well-trained or the genetic freaks. :-)

    > Here's a question I have about my speakers. The backs of my Jamo > speakers list the "Long Term Power" and "Short Term Power". > The two front towers list the long/short term power as 200 W and 300 W. > My center channel speaker says 70 W and 100 W > My rear surrounds say 50 W and 70 W. > Does this mean that I can't hook up a receiver that puts out more watts > than the above numbers (like the Denon below)???????

(First: "short term power" has no useful definition that I know of; Just run off the "long term" number to be safe.)

You can always hook up a more powerful amp; you just can't turn it up all the way. :-) For the most part, there isn't much power sent to the center and rear speakers in a 5.1/6.1 setup; the ratios you've got above are probably what one would expect. The front channels and (even moreso) the subwoofer take all the power. Without a sub, I believe all the bass energy gets sent to the front mains; that's what my receiver does, anyway. It's a bit out of date, though, so check your own documentation. :-)

Anyway, you're always better off with an amp that's too powerful than one that's too weak; driving a weak amp to clipping is a better way to damage speakers than driving them with an overpowered amplifier.

If you want to be (mathematically) safe, you should be able to adjust the "gain" of the center/rear channels of your receiver. At 105W/ch, you need to set your center channel to -2dB (66.3 W) and your rears to -3dB (52.5 W) at the max.

Or, just never turn the volume knob up past '12 o'clock.' with the tone controls/EQ set flat. :-)

Shouldn't be necessary, though, unless you've heard enough metal concerts to completely thrash your hearing. Even 5 inefficient (80db/W/m) speakers at 105W each would be a deafening 107 dB of sound. (Reference points: conversation, 50-60dB; lawn mower 85-90dB; jet engine 120-130dB).

I don't know the whole line, but I'll talk a bit about the infamous 901.

Several speakers per cabinet, facing every-which-way. This gives thin recordings that "spacious" audiophile sound. But, if the recording is done properly, you now have the ambience of the concert hall overlaid on the ambience of your living room. Did someone ask for a stereo sweet-spot? Hope not.

Each speaker is full-range, so a custom EQ is needed to boost the bass & treble frequencies to give them a somewhat-flat response. (The tone controls on my (decent) stereo system are turned off.) A physical speaker is _not_ mathematically linear. A tweeter needs to be very light to respond well. A woofer needs to be very large to respond well. Bose tries to do both with the same speaker cone. This is, in the parlance, the Wrong Thing. ( http://info.astrian.net/jargon/terms/w/Wrong_Thing.html )

]From my perspective, Bose does wacky things with speakers in order to stand out from the crowd. Or to get patents. Or whatever. I have no respect for them, as an engineer or as a music fan.

Because it's soooooooooooo friggin long (in fact soo long that I have to break this up into multiple pieces for the 'Jam to accept! :p) and I'm sure the majority of the people on this list have probably already read it on one of those two forums. But since you've requested it, here it is:

    Setlist Scotty's NAMM Adventure

    Whew! Where to start?

Ummm....Friday morning, I cruised up to the hotel that fellow 'Jammer Chris "Madsman" Ptacek was staying at with his fiancee Margaret and Jeff from PA. Anyhoo, after *finally* locating the hotel (was harder than it should have been), I walked into the lobby to find out what room they were in. Who's the first person I see in the lobby, sitting in a couch next to the front desk, talking to a cute blonde, but Virgil Donati! I greeted him and he looked at me kinda funny, asking me if he knew me. Dunno whether the look he gave me was one of "hey I recognize this guy" or "oh boy - is this one of those psycho fans?" Anyhoo I told him that I saw the very first Planet X gig at the Baked Potatoe. And then I said something like see ya later and proceeded to find out what suite my friends were in. Long story short, we never went to NAMM that day as Jeff wanted to check out a couple guitar stores in Hollyweird and that took most of the afternoon.

However, that night I cruised down to San Juan Capistrano to the Coach House to see the EB/MM All-Star Jam and Dixie Dregs gig. I had tickets to the second show so while Mike Kizer (who met me at the Coach House and is another fellow 'Jammer) and I were waiting outside, people emptyed out from the first show and Carlos & Melissa of Denver (known as Ual777 on MP.com) came over to me and said "hi." We chatted for a bit and I found out that they had gotten passes for the TA gig the following night. They had one extra in case I couldn't get one the next day, tho they didn't give it to me then (we assumed we'd bump into each other the next day, which we didn't until the TA gig). They also gave me a free ticket they received as they walked out the door for the California Guitar Trio who will be performing Feb. 4th, since they'll be back home by the time that show happens (actually they may be home right now as I type this....) Also, while waiting outside, we saw Ron Thal outside dressed in magenta pants, a red and white checkered shirt (think Howdy Dudey) and yellow jacket. Bizarre.

We also stopped by the EB/MM booth (decked out in full hippie gear, with the reps all dressed up as well - last year, all the reps were Elvis impersonators and the decor was 50s influeneced) and both Steve Morse and JP happened to be there signing pics and stuff, so we headed over to JP and talked to him for a minute - there was nothing major that I asked him - just pretty much told him that I enjoyed the show the night before and asked about his 7-string, which actually was there at the booth - pretty sweet looking guitar. While there, we also saw Nigel Tufnal's (Spinal Tap) 2 yellow guitars that both had a gas gauge and 50 billion guitar pickups, which apparently were up on silent auction (there was a ballot box) - I think the minimum bid was around $5000 for each.

Probably the most unusual experience we had was when we ran into Michael Wilton, who had done an appearance at the ESP booth, but we don't think many people showed up for it - we stopped by the ESP booth about 20 minutes before he was to do his appearance and we didn't see anyone in line and when we bumped into him a couple hours later, he seemed to be a little disappointed. I started to talk to him as he walked by and when he turned around I was thinking "whoa"! He looked pretty rough - hair was messed up (as if he had just waken up - not like all the times I've seen him live or met him after the shows) and he had this thick goatee that he was growing on the bottom of his chin. Made a comment about the goatee in a teasing way, which he kinda smiled at. While talking to him, it really seemed like he was on something - almost like he was a bit drunk (it was like his reactions were delayed), but he showed no signs of being drunk (didn't smell any alcohol) - I'm guessing he must've just been completely exhausted. It really didn't seem like the Michael that I've seen before - he acted completely differently (as some hot chick walked by, he even made some sort of comment "whoa - look at those headlights!"). We chatted for a few minutes - asked him what the progress on QR's new one was and he said they have all the music written - they're just waiting for Geoff to come up with a concept. Jokingly, he said that Geoff had a concept...that is until he saw "The Matrix". He said that it was easy to write music, that they have plenty of material written and that they won't be using anything written from the past sessions (Q2K and before). I asked what the direction was going to be and all he said was that the next one was going to be heavier - even tho I asked if it was going to be more in a style like O:M, Empire or PL or if it would continue in the direction Q2K was heading. That pretty much wrapped up the questions i could think of at that moment, so we told him "see ya later" and as he walked away, our buddy Clay (mentioned above) walked up to us and says "hey Michael Wilton" - so he calls Michael, Michael turns around in a bewildered way, looks at Clay, turns back around and just continues to walk away - seemed like he completely blew off Clay, which was a shock to all of us - especially Clay. I watched Michael out of the corner of my eye and as Mike K, Clay and I chatted, I see Michael stop, look around as if he was trying to figure out where he wanted to go, and then heads back over by us and stands with us, as if he were a part of our group (I'm guessing he was happy that somebody recognized him and wanted to talk to him due to the lackluster turn out at the ESP booth)! Talk about weird! Anyway, Clay and I figured we'd take the opportunity to ask him some more questions - among the things he said was that he has been working on a solo album that will be coming out before the next QR. It's gonna have the vocalist from Sweaty Nipples and some local Seattle musicians on it. I asked if it would be more of a shred-type album and he said that it would be more along the lines of O:M, which I found strange as I've read in past interviews with him that he wanted to get away from that style of playing - that he liked more of a bluesy style. I also mentioned that since the RFO demos are in wide circulation as bootlegs, that they should release them officially thru their fan club and I added that RFO was my favorite album of their's which seemed to surprise him. Anyway, I don't remember saying much else to him.

Well, the All-Star jam started with one of the big-wigs at EB/MM introducing everyone as they did their performance. The rhythm section for most of the all star jam was Dave LaRue on bass and Van Romaine on drums. First up was Steve Morse who played 2 tracks - dunno if they were SMB songs as I'm not familiar with their stuff. Next up was Vinnie Moore and during his piece, Dave got to do a bass solo. While Vinnie remained on stage, the MC introduced Dick Peterson of Sweden who won an Internet contest and got to perform. Next, Tony Levin stepped on stage with a 5-string bass along with Dave Stewart from Texas and they played a piece led by Dave Stewart with Dave LaRue and Van (yep 3 basses on stage - shoulda done Spinal Tap's "Big Bottoms"). Then JP came up and did a pretty kewl jam (reminded me of something Joe Satriani would do, with JP's style) with Tony and Van - nothing that I recognize from before. Kinda funny as I think his piece was the longest of any of the jams, aside from Steve Morse, but Steve played 2 tracks. After JP, Steve Lukather came up on stage and did a track. Last up was Albert Lee, joined by the EB/MM bigwig who was MC'ing that night on bass, Steve Morse and John Ferraro(?) on drums. After Albert's song ("Tear It Up" I think is it's name), Vinnie Moore, Steve Lukather and JP filed back on stage for the actual jam. What song they played, I don't know - but it was one with Albert Lee singing (as was Tear It Up). They each had their section to solo over and i must admit that JP seemed a bit out of his element during this jam. Not that what he played sucked or anything (I thought it was good) but he looked uncomfortable up there. And during Steve Morse's solo (which was after JP's), JP actually walked over to the other side of the stage where Steve was, took his guitar off and placed it at Steve's feet for most of Steve's solo and then walked back over to the side of the stage that he was at originally and just kinda hung out, talking to the bass-playing MC. After about 2 mins, he finally walked back over and grabbed his guitar and started to play. The funny thing is, both JP and Steve Lukather just kinda stood there and watched while the other guys soloed instead of playing some rhythm guitar (JP more than Steve Lukather). After everyone soloed, Albert started to sing some more and they wrapped up the song. Everyone got re-introduced and they left the stage. BTW, the whole Jam part of the show lasted about 72 minutes. Later that night, DD took the stage and played a cool, but I'm guessing shortened set (as they were doing 2 sets). I'd go into detail if I knew the song names, but I don't and I'm sure there's other reviews of other SMB/DD gigs elsewhere, so I'll leave it to your imagination! They did end the main set with Cruise Control tho! And for the encore, Van and Rod Morgenstein did a drum solo/duet before the rest of the Dregs came back on stage and they played a song with both drummers.

Fast-forward to the evening - Mike K and I finished our dinner at one of the Hilton's restaurants and headed up to the room that TA was playing at. Lucky for us someone opened up a door right as we walked up, so Mike K and I snuck in to catch TA just finishing their sound check. We quickly spotted Carlos and Melissa (the Denver couple) and hung out with them. Hotel security started to try to kick everyone out and MP, who was still on stage, identified Carlos, Melissa, Mike K and I as being "with him", so we got to stay. We picked our seats right in the front and center (actually Mike and I sat in the 2nd row). During this time, we met Christine Holz who, by herself, writes a music newsletter that centers on progressive music (tho it covers other kinds of music as well). Turns out that she was at ProgFest in September and saw TA there, just like me. She also told me that unfortunately, there won't be any more ProgFests as this last time the guys who put it together lost money on it.

Later, they finally started to allow people in to the room, but unfortunately, all the "public" (those who just got tickets like we had) had to stand in the back half of the room! All the seats in the first half apparently were reserved for vendors and other big-wigs who had VIP passes. Carlos and Melissa mentioned that during sound check, MP found out about who was going to get the seats and who would stand and he got pissed off since all the fans had to stand in the back. As it turns out, roughly half the seats were not filled - and yet people still had to stand! Mind you, most of the people who ended up seated around us looked like folks that you would never catch at a TA gig normally - lots of older people in their late 40s and older. Unbelievable! Anyway, the show starts and some Tama rep walks out and introduces Kenny Aronoff <sp?> who in turn introduced MP and TA. TA took the stage and the guys appeared to have a great time up there - especially MP and Neal who were at opposite ends of the stage, just as they had been at previous TA gigs (with Mike's TA kit being turned sideways so he was facing the other guys). The guys got thru about the first half of All of the Above and then drifted into a tune that sounded familiar which I recognized as PF's Shine On which was really kewl. It seemed like they extended it a bit and at one point it almost sounded like they were gonna go into playing PF's One of These Days (one of my fave PF tracks) but they didn't. During Shine On, Roine sang the first verse, MP the second and then Pete the bridge(?) before they all sang the chorus. I really have to wonder if this is the B-side MP was referring to in the TA diary - dunno if it was, but if it is, you all are in for a treat!!! As the final notes of Shine On faded, Neal started to play My New World, and I think it was on this track that Roine played one of his solos with some different effects - can't remember how much of it was different than the CD version, but I don't think it was that much different. During MNW, someone who we thought was Derek Sherinian walked right in front of the stage and waved to the guys as he walked to some seats off on the left side of the room, with his arm wrapped around a woman - found out after the show that this was actually Nick D'Virgilio. Anyway, after TA's part of the gig was finished, I started to look around and saw JP and Jordan further back, so I figured I'd say to Jordan since I hadn't talked to him yet. Jordan said "man you make all the shows!" as he shook my hand. I then mentioned to him that I heard about his predicament - that he was stuck at the Anaheim Convention Center and had no way to get to the Coach House to see the All-Star Jam/DD show the night before (which I believe MP told me at the Tama booth). He was a bit surprised and asked where I got my info and I jokingly told him "oh I know everything about you - I've got my sources! No I've been following you around this whole time and..." to which he smiled. I told him I was looking forward to the next DT CD and asked how long he was gonna be in town and he said Monday. One other thing about the TA gig - they were filming it - there were at least 3 pro camera men roaming around the stage and another behind the seated audience - as to what this was taped for, I dunno.

After that, Mike K and I headed home - too tired to stick around to see Stewart Copeland perform with his orchestra. Didn't matter - I got to see TA!!

Saturday....after unsuccessfully trying to get U2 tickets which went on sale that morning, Mike Kizer and I headed up to Anaheim. At NAMM, we headed over to the Tama booth to get passes for TA, only to find out that they were out of them - one of the reps said that Shure mics might still have some. I asked if MP was gonna be making an appearance and they said he was, right at that moment, alongside Lars Ulrich. They pointed me to where the end of the line was and I got in line while Mike went to the Shure booth. The line was unbelievably HUGE - at the rate we were moving, it would have easily taken 5 or 6 hours to meet them - no exaggeration! Mike K comes back empty-handed after walking around to see the length of the line. He tells me a friend of our's, Clay Marshal (who BTW, had gotten an extra TA ticket for Mike K) is up towards the front. So while Mike K held our spot in line, I walked up to talk to Clay and see the length of the line. While talking to Clay and a friend of his, who were about 12 people away from Lars and MP, security staff announced that the signing was just about over, and whoever got a picture of Lars and MP handed to them would get to meet them, the others were outta luck. As Clay and his buddy got handed pictures, I ran back and got Mike. We then stood with Clay and his buddy - me holding Clay's pic of MP and Mike K holding his buddy's pic of Lars (this was done so that security wouldn't kick us out of line). When we finally got up to the guys, I *briefly* said "Hey what's up" to Lars, shook his hand and proceeded to start talking to MP!!! Heh heh - blew him off!!! Anyway, I started chatting with Mike - he asked if I'd be going to the TA gig that night and I told him that they were outta tickets. He turns to a Tama rep standing next to me and says "Set him up, will ya?" and the rep gave me a ticket! Whew!! Was worried that I wasn't gonna be able to go (as we hadn't seen Carols or Melissa at all)! Anyway, MP told Lars that I was the one who has compiled all of DT's setlists - can't remember what Lars said, but it was along the lines of "wow" (dunno what Lars thought of me, but who cares?) MP also told me that he saw me at the All-Star Jam/DD show the night before - I asked why didn't ya say "hi" and he said he wanted to stay in hiding and not be bothered, which I can totally understand. I asked MP if he'd have any time to chat after the TA gig and he told me that he was going to see Vai at the Anaheim HOB (which *just* opened this week), who was totally sold out and impossible to get tickets for (I guess even comp tickets that the band would normally get for free had to be paid for by the band!!!). I also asked if anything new would be played - he said no, but that they would do only 3 songs. With that, I told him I'd see him later. In retrospect, I wish I would have told Lars "yeah, I love your first four CDs - hope the next one continues in the style that you left off with ...and Justice" - wonder what his response would have been?

Anyway, among the other people we saw that day, we saw Tony Levin who I just greeted briefly since he seemed pre-occupied at that moment. We also saw, but bother didn't talking to Peter Frampton, Mark Wood (the heavy metal violin guy), 2 guys from the Misfits, Elvira, George Lynch and a couple others I've forgotten. Also bumped into and talked to Shaun and Matt of Event, as well as Jaye Foucher who was with Shaun, Matt and their friends. We also saw and spoke with Nick D'Virgilio for a minute or two.

Just to comment on the Vanishing Point CD which tunred up in the mail yesterday (Thanks Graham), it certainly was a very pleasant surprise. Its been turning constantly in my diskman for the last 2 days and it is very good indeed - the bonus tracks are cool too. It is certainly more instantly appealing than the somewhat more hyped upcoming disk from Andromeda. More considered thoughts in a few more days.

And while on the subject of Swedish bands - Opeth ... Blackwater Park ... I like what I've heard, but I haven't heard any tracks with growly vocs yet. For those of your who (like me) are morally opposed to napster and don't have the damned thing installed, you can download a cool 5 minute mp3 from

    http://www.music-for-nations.co.uk/site/html/download.html

As for ringtones, I downloaded a number of classic Rock tones (Led Zep, Sabs, Deep Purple) from http://www.yourmobile.com/

however, since I did so, they seem to have removed the good stuff :-(

    Charlie

(who has 'Black Dog as his ring-tone and was joking about the 'morally opposed to napster' bit :-))

I don't think this has been mentioned yet, but the audio frequencies are 20Hz to 20,000Hz. There's no real point in getting any freqencies above or below this, because the average human ear won't be able to hear it anyways. I noticed (particulary with car systems) speakers have a 2 way model with a response of 60Hz-22KHz, and a three way of 60Hz-32KHz. These are pointless and not worth your money. I don't think you have that problem in home audio.

    Have Cool, Will Travel.
