Oh man, what can I begin to say about the best concert of my life?
The guys played in a soundstage area in the back of a motorcycle
shop, so there was NO stage, just a riser for the drums and
keyboards. I guess it sucked if you were in the back, but I was in
    the 2nd "row" 4 feet from Romeo, so I didn't have a problem :-).
    Anyway, on to the bands:

October Thorns - These guys obviously have talent, but they aren't my
thing. Not a fan of the Death and Black metal influences. Bassist was
good, but looked like a punk (its s metal show - take the sock off
your head ;-) ). The guitarist had a very interesting style, not only
because he was lefty, but because he played with the guitar strung
upside down (ala Albert King), but what turned him off to me was that
he was blatantly trying to sound like Petrucci. The only redeeming
thing about this band was that they did a pretty much flawless cover
of Metropolis pt 1 to end their set...it rocked, but its kinda sad
IMO that they had to rely on a DT cover to come up with a set closer
    to leave you pumped.

Mastermind - Now heres a band that kicks fucking ass. Really
amazingly cool "Maiden meets ELP" kind of sound. I guess you kinda
have to be into a 70s prog sound to appriciate some of their stuff.
Pretty cool guitarist...definately knows his stuff. The drummer -
holy shit! I could tell he was a jazz/fusion drummer, but his drum
solo really showed it off...amazing, he ranks up there with Peart and
Palmer in my book. They had a new singer with them...still a chick,
only with a more "goth" look (she was hot too :-) ). Great
voice...horrible stage presence...she faced the drummer half the time
(which wasn't necessarily a bad thing though ;-) ). The Ozzy "let me
see your fucking lighters" thing was really cheesy too. All in all a
great preceding band to what lay ahead...(I just wish Jens could have
made it out to the show :-) ).

Symphony X - Damn. DAMN. Thats all I can say. They were insane.
Russel has to be one of the best "live" singers I've ever heard. He
sounds just as good as on the CD. He's a ball of energy on stage too,
and really interacted with the crowd and got them pumped. Romeo...I
can't begin to put into words what command over the instrument this
guy has. When he plays, his hands barely move. Its just about the
most economical and efficient technique I've ever seen. He was
talking the to guys in the front row WHILE shredding flawlessly. He
is the best neoclassical/prog/metal guitarist out there. Also totally
pumped. The whole band was just so into it and so alive (and TIGHT),
it was incredible. Anyway, the set list was:

    Of Sins and Shadows
    The Eyes of Medusa
    Dressed to Kill
    Through the Looking Glass
    Evolution
    Fallen
    Transcendence
    Communion and the Oracle
    The Bird-Serpent War/Cataclysm
    On the Breath of Poseideon
    Romeo guitar solo (holy fuck!!!)
    Egypt
    Death of Balance
    Sea of Lies

    Encore:
    Church of the Machine
    Smoke and Mirrors

Afterwards I got to talk to Romeo for about 10-15 minutes. Awsome
down to earth guy (and he remembered me from our email
conversations). The whole night was just an awsome friggin experience.

BTW - they are looking to play the L'Amour in Brooklyn, NY the first
weekend of March, but the bookers don't believe they'll be that much
of a draw. So...CALL the L'Amour and tell them to book SyX!!! (dont
    have the # on me...but I'd just use 411).

Well, I'll skip all the crap about driving there for 3 hours, and go right to
    the review.
The concert was in this tiny room that could only hold about 300 people.
There was no stage, nothing separating the front row from the band. The sound
wasn't the best, and the bands complained about not being able to hear what
they were playing. But this was the best concert of my life.

October Thorns - Okay, it was my first time hearing the songs. While not bad
at all, I do have some major complaints. For one, I don't think it
complimented Symphony X very well. It just wasn't the style that fit with it,
I think it would compliment a band like Incubus much more... which is, by
far, not an insult, as I happen to love Incubus. The vocal parts need a
serious kick in the butt. The screaming growls and high screeches just didn't
really work, IMHO, though there were some great moments in the songs. The
highlight of the set, however, was Metropolis, which was pulled off pretty
fucking well, albeit not perfectly. Overall, not bad at all, but it wasn't
exactly the style I came to see. And still better than 99% of the crap you
    hear on the radio.

Mastermind - Couldn't hear a thing the chick was singing. The drummer was
-amazing-. The guitarrist had a lot of talent, but it seemed like he just did
a lot of wanking crap. He had some really good solos - and the one song,
though I forget the name of it, was that hickish instrumental - was damn
good. Overall, decent, complimented SyX, better, but the music in itself
    wasn't the greatest.

Now, we get to Symphony X. This is what I came to see, and I was not let down
at all. In fact, I know I'm gonna get flamed for this, but the concert put
SyX slightly above Dream Theater for me. Allen is the fucking man. He had
stage presence up the wazoo, he got the crowd into the show. Romeo is the
fucking GOD of guitar. He just stood up there, pulling off some of the
fastest shit I have ever seen effortlessly, having conversations with me and
a few people around me while doing it. He even turned the mic over to us a
couple of times. The setlist was, as best as I can recall...

    Of Sins and Shadows (TDWoT)
    The Eyes of Medusa (TDWoT)
    Dressed to Kill (Damnation Game)
    Through the Looking Glass (TiO)
    Evolution (V)
    Fallen (V)
    Transcendence (V)
    Communion and the Oracle (V)
    The Bird-Serpent War/Cataclysm (V)
On the Breath of Poseidon (V)
    Egypt (V)
Death of Balance, WITHOUT Lacrymosa (V)
    Sea of Lies (TDWoT)

    Encore:
    Church of the Machine (TiO)
    Smoke & Mirrors (TiO)

I only saw two mistakes the entire show. At one point, Rullo slightly messed
up a drum beat, but it was hardly noticeable. They just looked at each other,
looked at us, saw that a few of us noticed and laughed. The other, Allen
mixed up the words to Smoke & Mirrors and repeated half of a verse. Other
than that, they were completely on the entire night, pulling off some amazing
shit that you have to see/hear to believe. I was literally 2-3 feet away from
Romeo and Allen. My only complaint is that the sound wasn't the best quality.
I met all of the band, sans Allen, after the show. Lepond and Pinella seem a
lot like Rudess in the sense that they are friendly, but not friendly like
everyone's their buest buddy type. I didn't get to talk to Rullo, but I
talked with Romeo three times for a long time. Not only is Romeo the man on
stage, but he is a fuckin great guy off as well. We talked about everything
from video games (I want him to check out Final Fantasy music, hehe) to
people scamming SyX stuff (Avon Messiah is -not- SyX, glad I got an answer on
    that), and even his weight.

If you get a chance to see SyX, DO NOT PASS IT UP. If you have to kill
someone to see it, do it. This was, in all honesty, a night that I will not
forget. They are too good to be playing in the back of a bike shop. Call
venues up and demand that they get SyX to play there. Take people for hostage
unless SyX plays at a venue near you. It is worth it. I give the concert a
9.9/10 -- the .1 taken off due to the sound quality, which was beyond SyX's
    control.

I completely agree with the previous posts about the show. The guys on
the SX mailing list seemed to love October Thorns, I enjoyed their song
Page One and loved their cover of M1 but was majorly turned off by the
death vocals. The crowd seemed to agree, they stood around through OT's
songs and went wild for M1.

Mastermind seemed to be a loved it hated it performace from the people
I've talked to. I felt they had lots of talent but every song sounded the
same to me and I got bored after the first few. The drum solo sounded
    good.

Then SX came out and totally KICKED ASS! I couldn't believe how good they
performed. Yes, the sound wasn't the greatest and unless you were in
front you could only see their hair. But that didn't stop them from
putting on an unbelievable show. Russ was truely amazing and drove the
crowd wild. Everyone gave it their best and it showed.

    ok folks...it's been a while, new(old) logo, new ytse-address,
everyone's got paypal these days...i'm thinking of making another shirt.

i have some initial ideas but basically this one would be more "dream
theater" and less "ytsejam" though it will still feature our email
address somewhere on the shirt, as well as the website address. this
way, anybody that likes a) the band, b) the site, or c) the mailing list
can wear this shirt proudly. And I will probably once again use
high-quality material and charge somewhere around $20 including
    shipping.

could I get some feedback? even though i hope to make a shirt that goes
beyond our humble group, i figure you guys are a good cross-section of
possible buyers. Please let me know what you think, all.

    Thanks!
