Why mix music in DD 5.1? (BTW all DVD's which are not DTS are DD, this one
just happens to be DD 2-Channel)

I would say that that is direction music recording is going (i.e., DVD-Audio
and future version of Sony SACD). But I'm glad they went with 2-channel for
    this DVD.

Multichannel is supposed to add the ambience of the venue experienced during
the original performance. Of course it will always be different from what
you hear live due to the dependence on where the mics are vs. how your two
ears perceive ambience from whatever spot you happened to be sitting in. A
recording will NEVER reproduce a live event no matter how much the rocket
    scientist recording engineers try!

I can totally understand why KS did not go with it. It would not be accurate
because the mic'ing is all direct so it's not like you have a minimalist
recording of a symphony with only a few mic's. The rear channel stuff would
have to be artificial, and unless you have a lot of experience mixing in
multichannel, chances are it would sound artificial or more likely just
    plain goofy!

My only complaint with the mix is that the level seems really low. I have to
crank up the volume much more than I would for a CD (but it doesn't make it
sound worse just - just lower in level). Also, I found that when you try
using the center channel (w/Dolby Pro-Logic) it is very mid-heavy (like
someone else mentioned). Stick with plain stereo when listening to this
    DVD.

    End of techno-rambling,

    I-Man

    > Right, but how many people pay the $25 for just the fanzines?

Tho it appears that I am in the minority, I pay the $25 for the fanzines! I
have ever since I started subscribing to the fanzine all the way back to
when Awake was first released in 94 (well before the Xmas CDs were thought
of). So stick that in your pipe and smoke it!

    >You've got to be a monumental fuckwit to take a boot over an official
    live release,

heh heh, he said "monumental fuckwit" :-)

    >here's what i really want to know, and i know i'm not the only one.
    what
the hell do these two bands sound like? i mean, i've heard about them
    one
the 'jam constantly, but i have no idea what their sounds are in
comparrison to other bands/genres. just because 'jammers like them
doesn't mean they sound anything like DT, so help the rest of us who
    don't
know them out, and give some reviews of what these two bands sound like.
    thanks a heap.

If you like DT, I'd definitely recommend checking out PoS. I don't know a
    whole lot of bands to
use as a reference point. I have heard a couple Faith No More songs, and
    I think whoever it
was that said it may be correct that the singers sound similar.

They're very melodic, and the disc I have is rather dark sounding - but
dark in a good happy way, not
dark in a sad moody way.

The guitar solos rarely venture into what would be considered shred
territory, but they are very tasteful
and well-done. Very appropriate for the music without overdoing it.

you can get Blind Guardian mp3's off mp3.com/bg so you can check them out
    for yourself. I haven't
listened to that disc much - not because it's a bad disc, but because I
like PoS a lot more at the
moment - and I've only got two ears. :-)

    >Take a listen to track 1 on The Perfect Element pt 1, which starts out
    as straight
metal with almost rap-like vocals, and then takes a u-turn when the
    chorus
    starts.

Yeah, that threw me for a loop. At first I was thinking, "ah man, I just
    bought a Limp Bizkit knock-off,"
then they start harmonizing the vocals, and I was like "whoa!"

Good stuff all around - just ordere the other 2 discs off amazon - along
with my $60 CORBA book. 8-)b

I really don't believe this is the same jam that talks
about getting multiple boots from this last tour. =A0If
I had fans like this, I'd quit jumping through the
hole in my ass to please all these whinners. =A0This
again proves my theory that a good percentage of DT
fans are nothing but spoiled little children. =A0There
aren't many bands out there that care this much about
fans. =A0They decided that they would release this live
cd because the demand would be great. =A0I thought it
would be great too. =A0I guess we were wrong. =A0
P.S. =A0And don't start bitching about the damn same
show on the same tour shit. =A0Consider yourself lucky

Subject: potential insight as to what JP may play on G3 tour
    Message-ID: <B7430B83.1EED%schansen@cts.com>

I posted this on MP.com and I figured with all the pissing and moaning going
on abooot how "I only pay the $25 for the Xmas CD and not the fanzine" BS,
that I'd post it here as well.

    -------------

With the questions abooot what material JP's gonna be doing on the tour, I
think I may have found the answer - in the latest fanzine no less!! You know
that "dated fanzine that is a bonus, while you pay for the Xmas CD"? It
*does* have info that is insightful, as you will see below.

Taken from page 18 (reporting on a clinic JP did on Oct. 2, 2000 in Lille,
    France) :
"John told us that the songs he would be playing today were all new untitled
songs that he had composed. The other night, Jordan Rudess helped him wih
the background music on a very small keyboard in his hotel room. Incredible!
These songs were of course very guitar-driven and showed once again what a
gifted guitar player John is. All the songs had that special John Petrucci
style. Very funny was 'the disco song' in which John played his riffs over
some disco beat created by Jordan....The last song John played was another
really fast one in the style of Acid Rain..."

And taken from page 25 (reporting on a clinic JP did on Oct. 15, 2000 in
    Rotterdam) :
"The first song contained many open-string techniques...The next song was,
as John called it, his dance tune...The third song had a more mellow
feeling...Then it was time for the last song which had a Paradigm Shift kind
of 4-bar intro, but was not very interesting after all."

Now mind you, I am *not* saying for a fact that these songs are gonna be a
part of JP's set, but they *might* be. Or maybe they'll become incorporated
into the latest DT album - it's anybody's guess right now (well, aside from
the band). But I thought it might be something you all might appreciate. And
it does go to show that the fanzine does have some worthwhile stuff in it,
even tho it may be sent out late.

    Scott

Interesting take on the contract angle. I wonder if DT
would look for a bigger, better deal with a big
company, or shoot for more creative freedom with a
    smaller label?...maybe both?

That would be ironic. My guess is that you're not
talking about the same people though. People who love
boots will probably pick up the official, live release
too. On the other hand, maybe someone will want to
    argue the "fuckwit" case.

Agreed. I'm not a boot fan (as opposed to a booty
fan). And you're correct, I'd much rather see a
    beautiful ass than hear it...

It's only whining when other people do it!

Hmmm. I think you're right there. If "fan" is really
short for "fanatic", some of us must not be fans. But
we still like them a lot. ;)

    * Pain of Salvation - "Entropia"
    * Pain of Salvation - "One Hour by the Concrete Lake"
    * Soilwork - "A Predator's Portrait"

I popped in OHbtCL and, after listening for a good 30 minutes, I must say I
am pretty disappointed. Many of you guys hailed PoS like they were the
goddamn second coming of DT. Shame on you - not even close! The production
is bad (listen to that snare!), and the singer's voice, which was raved
about by pretty much everybody, is nothing special. These guys sound like
they are playing progressive and heavy JUST TO PLAY PROGRESSIVE AND HEAVY.
Nothing inspired; nothing caught me off guard. Music like this is SUPPOSED
to catch you off guard. I haven't listened to "Entropia" yet, but I'm not
expecting much, especially because it predates OHbtCL, therefore the
production will probably be worse. I don't doubt the talent of these guys,
but the singer and engineer need to get their shit together before I will
listen again. How is the production on their latest album?

Now, Soilwork's disc is an entirely different story - these guys are tight!
Very impressive. They sound very much like Nevermore TRY to sound like...
    :)

So, anyway, for those of you still interested, my two PoS discs are up for
sale - $9 a pop. Brand new today...

    Thanks,
