Wow, we're back up! Let's see if I can start a thread.....
Hello All,
I'm a long time subscriber, but rarely post. I'm kind of like the JM of the 'jam.
Anyway, the "Prog" bug has come over me hard lately. Mostly due to some great MP3s I got off of Napster(RIP). I'm a big fan of Spock's Beard, Fates Warning, Symphony X and, of course, DT. I want to learn more about the roots of Prog. Along the lines of Genesis, King Crimson, Yes, etc. Tell me the most essential CDs I need to have in my collection.
I know this subject has been covered many times in the past. If you prefer, you can e-mail me privately or point me to somewhere on the Internet.
Thanks, Eric etrautmann@amslog.com

Well, I'm not very up on the older Prog either, but I can point you to two very essential albums: King Crimson's 'In The Court Of The Crimson King' and Yes's 'Close To The Edge.' Yes's 'Fragile' is also good. I haven't really listened to any King Crimson, but I've heard from several long-time Proggies that ITCOTCK is THE album to have, by that group anyway. As far as the Yes stuff, I really like "Siberian Khatru" from 'Close To The Edge,' and the two aforementioned albums are safe bets. Of course, there's also Rush's old stuff, if you're into that, I would probably recommend 'Permanent Waves' myself. Happy Progging, and good luck!

OK, let me try. From Yes, you need the Yes Album, Fragile, Close to the Edge and maybe Relayer. From Genesis, Foxtrot, Selling England by the pound, The Lamb Lies down on Broadway and Trick of the Tail. From King Crimson, the first album, discipline, and a few others, not a big kc fan. From ELP, the self titled one, Tarkus, Pictures at an Exhibition, Trilogy, and Brain Salad Surgery, plus the Welcome back live album. RFor Rush, you need 2112, Farewell to kings, Hemispheres, Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures, and exit STage Left. That's all I can think of.

Well, their second album "Towers of Avarice" came out a few months ago. While there's not the cool keyboards of Matt Guillory on it, in many ways it is a stronger and better album than their self-titled. I'd recommend it if you liked the first one. Other than that, I'm not sure what info you are looking for.

Hello all !! I have good news about my upcoming instructional video for guitar: I will start recording the lessons at the end of july, it will take some weeks after that to make the video ready and then we will release it, I am talking to a distributor at the moment who has connections all over the world. There will be NTSC copies as well as PAL ones. the video will take about an hour and a half, there will be lessons, videosamples from Sun Caged rehearsals, a videoclip by a SC song (Killer Banshee), some Lemur Voice footage and maybe even some Stormrider or other footage. the lessons will have techniques (advanced as well ;-), composing, improvising, creating a good sound, rhythm guitar exercises, dynamics and ofcourse SHRED. I will update my site soon with the new information. I am also in the progress of transcribing a long piece out of the song "Childhood Facade" by Lemur Voice, I got a lot of questions about the clean parts and the progressive parts in the song. The song itself is downloadable from mp3.com (http://www.mp3.com/lemurvoice) I will put it at my website under "instruction" pretty soon. In the meanwhile I am working with my band Sun Caged on new material and the vocals for the existing songs, we are ready to go on stage already, just keep on watching the gigs section at my website (will be updated tonight) for Sun Caged gigs, one has been planned: Friday, November 2nd -> Vagant, Echt (Netherlands) Cheers Marcel "Want to be off the mailinglist ? send a REMOVE email to: marcel.coenen@libertel.nl"
