Douglas Adams passed away last friday from a heart attack at the age of 49.
There was a thread about his work some time ago so i thought some people

It all depends on what your definition of "progressive" is...
If you like the way Tool play the live versions of Push It and Third Eye on
Salival, then you will love Lateralus!
The songs are very drawn out like they are on Salival.
To me it's definately not straight metal or altenative music. There are so
many different tangents about this cd.
The different sounds that Tool incorporate on this cd is fantastic.
It's very diverse sounding but very moody, there is actually alot of SDV
stuff about Lateralus. Not so much in the musical sense but in the feel and
atmsophere. It's dark, it's floaty, as in the songs seem to take you on a
long journey of surrealism.
The lyrics are not as thought provoking or controversial as their previous
albums which is probably my only criticism. I loved the clever way that
Maynard wrote lyrics on Aenima.
One thing's for certain, if anyone had doubts about Tool's ability to follow
up Aenima you can put them to rest!
There is NO selling out by Tool!
The cover artwork MUST be seen to be believed!
It's a wicked concept!
-Paul.

Well, there are complicated rhythms on a lot of it; but to call it progressive metal brings to mind all the terrible bands I keep hearing about on this list. Anyway, I haven't had such an initially positive reaction to a CD since SfaM. Really, really incredible CD. It was amazing last night going to buy it. My friends and I were planning on going to waterloo records to buy it, but the line was probably 400+ people outside the store (weezer was coming out, too, along with Depeche Mode and Missy Elliot and REM) so we go to Cheapo's down the street, and as we walk up to the door, they put up a sign saying "Out of Tool. Sorry." So then we head over to tower a few miles away, find a place to park, and it has a line not quite as bad as waterloo, but still formidable. Luckily, we saw someone we knew maybe a quarter of the way down the line, stopped to chat, and then next thing we knew, we were buying the new tool. Three cheers for cutting in line!
PS - whoever else it was that said the packaging was incredible, you are absolutely correct! it is the most creative, interesting packaging I've seen in a really long time!

Well,
finally got the christmas issue of DTIFC, and few things got me gasping my breath. There's a long interview with MikeP and when commenting about the Roseland show he says: "...and I even invited Kevin Moore to do "Space-Dye Vest" with him and stuff, which would have been the ultimate surprise, but he declined the invitation..." Talk about a dream (almost) coming true there :(
The christmas CD is nice, not gonna tell what's on it in case someone reads this by accident (e-mail me if you want details), but it is funny :)
Also, I was very surprised to see a photo of the band where James is wearing the hockey jersey of the Czech national team... and that shirt has become a painful sight to my eyes for one particular reason :((( (for those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, see http://www.ihwc.net/) Team Canada shirt would've been nicer, even tho we Finns have similar memories from 1994 games this time with Canada, oh well, maybe 2002 will be finally our year.
