As a brazilian fan let me try to clarify ...i was not at the gig, but a good
friend (DT freak and journalist) told us about it.

What happened at the show...first of all, Malmsteen cancelled all the
opening acts on every brazilian show. At the Porto Alegre gig (where the
incident happened) . At the show, when he was introducing the band members,
he talked something like: "From Sweden, now in America...Mr. Patrick
Johnson", with EVERY member. Then at the mid of the show, he started playing
the US national anthem, people in the crowd started booing. (My personal
note, he would had caught more attention of the audience of inteast playing
the Star Spangled Banner, play our national anthem just like Steve Vai
did...people loved that moment). Derek and Yngwie got really mad. Derek
himself was showing the middle finger to the crowd. They went backstage,
then when Yngwie returned he told the crowd something like "Do you want to
hear more music ? so you gotta listen to Star Spangled banner first", with
all that atittude that we all know very well, so almost all the crowd of
1300 started booing Yngwie..that turned him very upset, but he proceed to
play the anthem. The audience then started to chant "Bin Laden, Bin Landen"
and started to throw things at the stage.Yngwie ended the show with the
following words "God bless America - FUCK YOU ALL". After the show they
rushed to the vans and to the hotel.

This morning Derek posted a note, he sounded very pissed and ended up the
note with "..I want to thank Yngwie for backing me up, and for standing up
for the USA. To the people in Porte Allegre, you should be ashamed of
yourselves. I don't give a fuck if I ever play your peasant infested third
world city again. God Bless America, Derek Sherinian"

Not the kind of words that a fan would like to hear....peasant infested
    THIRD WORLD CITY ?

The whole day, our national Mailing list was flooded (more than 200) with
emails about the incident. Then a few minutes ago Derek posted a note on his
site apologizing for his previous "hate" email.

Yngwie can play whaterever he wants, but he should be concerned that not
everybody might like. I personally think that the crowd was wrong with all
the chants, but maybe Yngwie was wrong too, trying to force people to listen
to the anthem. People paid money to see him playing his material, not a
patriotic act from a Sweden.(maybe he is more american than we think :))

Just to finish, we Brazilians have nothing against USA, and we're backing up
USA against all terrorist acts held against America.

Derek Sherinian, use the gift that you have and play us some F#CK!NG GOOD
    MUSIC !!! :-D

    Peace & Music

I am from Norway, a *western-world-democracy*, and I am well up-to-date on the
terrorist attacks on the USA. I also know that, while I am a citizen of a USA-
ally, I do not always agree with its policies, and I do not consider americans
to be the "glorious heroes of Hollywood". I often see USA as a weird country,
with perhaps too much freedom. I am not overly positive when it comes to
discussing the USA in my English class, but I have also visited the USA on a
seminar, along with other young people, whom I consider my friends (the USA is
in many ways a fine country, but I prefer to be from Norway). My point is
this: The terrorist attacks on the USA were downright stupid, and it was
perhaps even more stupid of the audience in Porte Allegre to boo (and perhaps
even chant 'Osama, Osama') when the band performed "Star Spangled Banner". If
President Bush knew, he would probably be taped to a chair by his advisors, in
order to prevent him from creating a nuclear winter in Brazil... I support
Yngwie Malmsteen and Derek Sherinian, and I encourage everyone else out there
(who has got anything that might resemble a brain between their ears) to do the
same. One does not boo on a supreme guitar player and his supreme band just
because he plays the *wrong* song.

With nothing to do here... it takes 20 seconds before the lyrics start in "Lie," and of course they start nearly instantaneously in "The Spirit Carries On," but other than that, it's almost always a long wait for some vocals in any given DT song.

But THE longest? ACOS would be my first guess, but considering it's divided into sections that are deliberately instrumental or vocal, I would like to disqualify it. Other than ACOS?

You can see that I have very precious little time on my hands here, folks. I need to get out more.

    That's irrelevant.

    >(My personal note, he would had caught more attention of the audience of >inteast playing the Star Spangled Banner, play our national anthem just >like Steve Vai did...people loved that moment). You're missing the point. The song was played in tribute to a horrible act, and was a show of support to a country. I'm sure that if none of this had happened, the US anthem would not have been played.

    >Derek and Yngwie got really mad.

I don't blame them. They should have been happy that they finished the rest of the set. I personally would have walked off the stage, especially after crude chants of BinLaden or whatever. As Derek said, it's not a political thing, it's a matter of showing respect to thousands of innocent people that were killed in a terrible and senseless act. By booing and chanting BinLaden, they were showng absolute disregard and disrespect to those people that were hurt or killed and their families.

    > Not the kind of words that a fan would like to hear....peasant infested > THIRD WORLD CITY ?

Fans....that boo the performers and throw shit at the stage. Nice fans. Granted, that remark is probably out of blind anger and somewhat inappropriate.....but I understand his anger, not his public reaction.

    > emails about the incident. Then a few minutes ago Derek posted a note on his > site apologizing for his previous "hate" email.

While I agree he shouldn't have gone into calling it a third-world city, he has the right to say whatever he wants, especially when something like this occurs. I have a problem with his politically-correct apology on something like this, but he does what he needs to do.

    > Yngwie can play whaterever he wants, but he should be concerned that not > everybody might like. Yngwie playing the anthem in between sets was in tribute to a terrible act. It's not a patriotic act and it's not an American force-feeding patriotism on others. That's ridiculous. I'm sure he's done it in other places, and got a better response. I applaud Yngwie for playing it as his encore - at that point, the crowd should have been happy enough that they went through the entire set. > Just to finish, we Brazilians have nothing against USA, and we're backing up > USA against all terrorist acts held against America.

I don't think anyone (including Derek) thinks that Brazil is Anti-American or anything like that. I think the realization needs to be made that although these people are performers, they're human beings as well, and a selfish, despicable crowd doesn't deserve their respect simply because they paid to see a show. Like I said before, the fact that they're performers is proven when they actually finished their sets in front of the crowd..... Derek's "peasant-infested" comment was out of line and his saying that the country and city shouldn't be judged by the crowd's action is absolutely correct. But he shouldn't apologize for anything but that comment. And that crowd should definitely be ashamed of themselves.
