What's up y'all!
Okay, I'm coming out of "lurk" mode for the first time in about a year...
Picked up 6DoIS today... all I can say is YEAH BABY YEAH... I love all that
DT does, but this is the neatest work that they have done IMHO since ACOS.
Now, don't get me wrong, I loved M2; however, this album just shows so much
disregard for "the norms of music" and I love it.... the progressions are
sick (in a good way) and the movements are flowing... God, I love having JR
in DT, his input completes DT in a way that can only be described as freakin'
radical. Anyone going to the Boston show in March? I'll be there.... I'm
coming back from Oklahoma for a visit to "home" and can't wait to see DT for
the first time in 3 years. I so miss seeing DT live. Mike, I know you read
the ytsejam.... great job on the production with John... incredible. And I
must say, thank you to East/West for leaving DT alone to make music as they
please..instead of forcing them to be typecast by the addition of a producer.
DT's last 2 efforts (6DoIS and M2 SFAM) have been incredible because DT has
been allowed musical freedom that they deserve to have. I sat down on my kit
today and tried to break down some of the stuff from this album, I'm going to
be busy trying to pick up what I can of this stuff.... and I'm going to be
exhausted too. MP never disappoints.... again hands down winner of the MD
Reader's Poll. Kickass! Take it easy everyone!
Jeremy Kube
PS: If anyone on this list goes to Oklahoma State University, please let it
be known and e-mail me. You can't miss my license plate around Stillwater,
it says "YTSEJAM".

Well, I was happy to receive the new Dream Theater album in the mail
today. I ripped it open and popped it in my computer's Cd-ROM drive, and
it starts running this stupid flash application. I wanted to play the CD
in Winamp, because I like having all the CDDB info pulled up, can't do it.
Apparently I can only run it in the Windows CD player. I also like to
archive an mp3 copy for use on my portable, can't do that either. Then I
t out of principle).

Had no problem with mine, ripped it in iTunes on my iMac, and have already
burnt a copy for the car. Hmm... no probs here

Well, since CD-NOW decided they couldn't be proactive and send the new CD to my
NEW mailing address after the change of address disaster I went through with em, I
have to wait to get the damn thing until it gets re-routed from my previous to my
current and humble, abode. That said, I was already to see if it was
copy-protected, but, alas, I can only read all the postings, with my head buried
in my hands at this point, shaking and stiring in bloody anticipation like a James
Bond martini.
As far as my immediate opinion on the CD from what I've ascertained from sample
listenings, I guarantee I'll like it more than SfaM, which was my least favorite
DT CD to date (I think the term 'melodramatic' comes to mind for me, regarding
that CD).
I'll post my experiences with ripping and playing the thing on my MAC when I get
it, if it arrives at my door within a decent period of time (like, say, within 2
months!). I know for a fact the media is configured differently, and functions
different (if sometimes at all) on a Mac than a PC, so we shall see...
From what i've read on Portnoy's eponymous site, LaBrie only functions as the
singer and accompaniment on vocal melodic structures. I guess that's why LaBrie
has his Mullmuzzler project, for the obvious reason of more total control, and
input. But, as DT is MP/JP/JM (and now, it seems, somewhat JR) ship... ah, who
knows?
I also agree that Rudess is an amazing keyboardist, and his style tremendously
complimentary for the band, but I find it too theatrical and over-the-top dramatic
at times. His solo's are great, too, but again, sometimes it's a bit much. Then
again, perhaps I'll find more too enjoy on the new CD as he works his magic more
into the band framework.
Anyhow, I'll keep reading the damn jamn with a certain amount of trepidation until
I get my damn copy of the damn CD, dammit!
Damn...

Long time (around 1994?) lurker and VERY occasional poster..
Here are some quick and slightly jumbled comments about the new album to contribute to the discussion..
SPOILERS!!
Musically, they have raised the bar again for progressive rock/metal. The band continues to sound innovative and fresh. This time they've added a lot more keyboard variety and layers (especially on the disc 2 epic). The riffs have never sounded so tight and the guitar/keyboard interplay that wowed me from the start with Take The Time when I first heard it in 1993 is back (see Blind Faith!). James sounds fantastic. The whole band is just POLISHED and Jordan seems to have hit his stride as well. The music is simply stunning. As a guitarist, I continually find new inspiration in Petrucci's playing.
Lyrically I can find a few faults. This is about the only shortcoming I can see right away. The theme of the album is clearly mental illness/"inner turbulence"/ideological and moral confusion, etc. All 6 songs stay on track and reinforce the theme, which is nice for cohesion. Now we delve into a personal area. I suppose this album theme lends itself to religious treatment in some respects, and as I am not a fan of most things religious, I find myself connecting less with those parts of the songs. Particularly some of the lyrics to Blind Faith, the end of The Glass Prison, and parts of The Great Debate. Overall, Petrucci continues to show the most lyrical talent (with Kevin still sorely missed in that area).
Here are some quick comments about a few songs' lyrical content:
The Glass Prison (MP) - I was convinced this song was about alcoholism, which MP had admitted to in an interview a while back (with obvious symbolism in the GLASS prison). This supposition was confirmed when a friend told me about some specific references to the AA program - ie, that people in AA are known as "friends of Bill W." The heavy, wild riffs made this an early favorite. I could do without the religious references, but again that's personal preference. Now I'll put on my grammar nazi cap and point out that MP spelled "invincible" "invinsible", which would only be forgivable if he considered it a British spelling and the band was called Dream TheatRE. :)
Misunderstood (JP) - I think this song is about Petrucci coming to grips with the modicum of fame that is allotted to guitar heroes today.. He's not exactly a household name, but he's a guitar "god" to more and more every year. He never seemed comfortable being mobbed by fans after shows..
The Great Debate (JP) - I am disappointed with the topic, the treatment, and the largely awful samples in this song. Taking on a controversial topic like this is opening a Pandora's box IMO and likely to please no one. Although JP tries to show both sides of the coin, I feel he's firmly in the right-to-life leave-nature-alone camp; just my impressions. The samples are plentiful and mostly horrible. I don't need to hear pseudointellectual journalists talking out their collective ass. It pains me that these people have been immortalized in a 14-minute DT song, and that to experience this incredible music I have to listen to them. I imagine in time I'll learn to block them out :). Maybe DT will release a no-samples B-side or something. The WORST samples that stick out are: - The one where the person talks about ends justifying the means; that's an idiotic argument. In the same sample the guy says something about science PROVING that it can produce results with this research; a moral question should have nothing to do with anticipated (and impossible to predict) results. Again an irrational ends/means argument. - The emotional plea by a woman who says if stem cell research can help her son, she's for it. Emotional pleas have no place in a moral discussion. Alright, off my soapbox; those are truly the only negative things I can say about this amazing album. On the positive side with The Great Debate, lyrically, Petrucci spins some COOL lines like "white coat heroes" and "embryonic clay".
6 Degrees - Wow. Wow. That's about all I can think of. It starts off sounding like a movie soundtrack with overture - like no other prog I've ever heard, really. The lyrics are a bit stronger here, I feel. It takes you through some quite heavy parts, and then slows down, then bursts into one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard (Solitary Shell!!! Yes!). I had chills through half of it. Here's the new orchestral sound that must have Jordan layering at least 8 tracks in some places. Very very cool, even though I imagine he'll have to automate a lot of that live..
Finally, some random thoughts about various parts on the album that I really like:
- Portnoy's minimalist (a word I usually hate) drumming on parts of Misunderstood and Disappear; works well, especially in Misunderstood. - Petrucci's anti-solo (sound effects) at the end of Misunderstood, which would fit with the theme of decrying his superhuman guitar-god alter ego. The disjointed Brian May-ish harmonizer solo in the middle works on that level as well. - Jordan's piano part in the middle of Blind Faith (the "real" piano tone part) sounds like a modification of the original ytsejam riff - Jordan's use of the "choir oohs and ahs" voice-like keyboard sound at many parts of Disc 2, including in Solitary Shell - this sound is very reminiscent of his Rudess/Morganstein work. - Petrucci's Al DiMeola-esque acoustic work in Solitary Shell, which is also similar to some of the instrumental stuff he did on the Rudess/Petrucci CD. - Portnoy billing himself as "lead drummer" on the album :). - Petrucci's moments of vocal harmony in Misunderstood and Solitary Shell both rule. - Mike's metal singing in The Glass Prison :). Reminiscent of "HYPOCRITE! How could you be so cruel..." - Petrucci is possessed by Steve Vai for the whole intro of About To Crash (Reprise). Man that kicks ass. Totally Vai. - The Grand Finale uses similar chord modulations and meter changes to the way they end SFaM live on the DVD; I always thought that ending was particularly effective. - The overall preponderance of beautiful major keys (but not straight boring major), consonant intervals, suspended chords - 4ths, 2nds, etc. It's what, to me, makes parts of Blind Faith, Solitary Shell, and About To Crash (Reprise) sound so sweet. I just love that sound.
Well that's quite enough for now...
-Neil.

For you guitarists, Guitar World has released a book of Petrucci's Wild Stringdom columns called, strangely enough, "Guitar World Presents John Petrucci's Wild Stringdom". It's a nice neat collection of his columns with some good information. It also comes with a CD which has him playing all the examples slowly.
I ordered it from www.sheetmusicplus.com and it arrived in less than a week.

I would have bothered if they'd been any good. I don't like their albums and the stuff I heard at Manchester failed to inspire me, so I was more than content to stay in the bar and prepare properly for Dream Theater. :-)
> This contained some nice piano stuff from Jordan and a lovely > soulful, bluesy solo from Petrucci, who really seemed to be playing > out of his skin this evening.
I'm not a big fan of Lines In The Sand, but Petrucci's solo on Saturday night was absolutely stunning: full of soul and passion. I may look at that song in a new light now.
At both shows (Manchester and London), I thought that Petrucci was playing better than I've ever seen him play before. He was totally spot-on, and seemed to be really "up for it". What a guy.

IBM Deskstar 75GXP Class-Action Lawsuit
Hello Fred, thought you might be interested in this web site and maybe pass it along to other readers. I am an owner of one of the affected IBM hard drives and having problems with it even after one warranty replacement. I look forward to your articles each week! Keep up the great work. http://www.sheller.com/ibmclassaction.htm --- Tim Dornbos
I hadn't heard of this one, but according to the web site (maintained by the lawyers handling the suit) it's about "alleged reliability problems involving the Deskstar 75GXP series of hard disk drives.... This case is being brought on behalf of all U.S. purchasers of a 75GXP series hard disk drive. The complaint alleges that IBM has falsely represented that the 75GXP is a reliable drive...."
If you have--- or had--- a Deskstar 75GXP, the site might well be worth a look.

The CDA files can be seen if you do the following: Right click on your cd rom in my computer. There will be a drop down box. In there is an option to choose session. Clicking on that gives the choice between audio or dt.exe. Choose audio and now the directory changes to the cda files. At that point the cd player starts working, I use Play Center from Creative.
Been able to rip just fine, too.

Go see 'em. When I caught the band in Philly not too long ago, I was impressed. They play most of the songs from their self-titled album, a fairly Faith No More-esque piece of work. No covers unfortunately. In between songs, Mike Patton does some crazy noise stuff on various synthesizer and sampler apparati. A highly entertaining show even to those that hadn't heard the album (so said a few of my chums anyhow).

First of all, I'd like to say that it's very impressive to see DT at #1 on CDnow and in top 50 on Amazon (who ordered it from there anyway?). Let's see how well it will do on the Billboard.
Now for the CD itself. I got my copy on pre-order at CDnow, and it actually arrived the day before the release date. Considering that I ordered via the cheapest shipping method and that it went out on Friday, I'd say CDnow did well. As for the music, I can't say that I'm disappointed, but I would only give the album four out of five stars. There are a couple of reasons.
First and foremost, I was fairly unimpressed with the songwriting on the second CD. They're talking about mental illness, so why is the music in (mostly) major keys, with jazzy arrangements and easy-going melodies? Perhaps the overall lyrical theme was inappropriate for the music... go figure. That said, I wholly enjoyed War Inside my Head (Portnoy's vocals are better than ever) and the proceeding track. The CD has a few other highlights, but in my opinion, too few and far between to mention. Kind of the same way I felt about the variations added to some older numbers on LSfNY - they threw in a few popular themes and even a reggae bit, but those sections were only a few minutes long if even, and everything else sounded very similar to the studio versions of the songs.
The first CD, however, I'm overly impressed with. With the exception of maybe Disappear, the lyrics are great, and the arrangements are stellar. It's very interesting to hear DT incorporate some mainstream sounds in their songs - almost like hearing a band finally do it right.
My favorite track so far is Misunderstood, not just because it's musically amazing, but also in part because I can identify with the lyrical theme a lot. It should be a radio single, people should start calling their local radio stations and requesting it. I know I will. Maybe if we beg for it with enough persistence, they'll start spinning it... who knows where it will go after that?
Personally I think that the samples of newscasts in Great Debate are a bit overdone, kinda make me want for the song to get to the point. Glass Prison is awesome, but I've had the pre-master MP3 for over a month now, and heard it all too many times for it to be astounding, which is unfortunate, but hey, I wanted to get an early sampling of their new stuff.
As for the vocals, I like what LaBrie does with effects and such, but I didn't notice too much variations in his vocal styling. He does vary the timbre of his voice a lot more, but I didn't hear much rhythmic pattern to his voice, it's very melodic as it has always been. Not by any means a bad thing, just an observation - any reggae or hip-hop influence is non-existent.
As for the other musicians, all I can say is WOW. Portnoy is on top of his game of course (lead drummer after all), Rudess probably qualifies to be the most incredible musician in the band, and Petrucci incorporates a lot more pentatonic passages than he has on previous studio efforts, and he does it well. There's not too many spotlights for Myung, but where you do hear him he's incredible as well.
All in all, a worthwhile release. I'm glad I got it, and I look forward to listening to it in the coming weeks. Also can't wait for the show in DC on the 24th.

I used Exact Audio Copy and it appeared to rip and encode with no problem. Upon playing the files created I heard nothing. I then tried ripping and then encoding separately, same problem. I then tested the tracks, and they seemed to have some kind of timing problem, and came out of the test with a peak level of 0.0%, which would explain the no sound problem I think. I tried working with some of the options but to no avail. Did your ripped flies play properly?
Also, I have had no problem with mixed mode CDs in the past using Music Match Jukebox for ripping/encoding or Winamp for playing, as I do own some Enhanced CDs.
> Now that you mention it, the discs themselves do > *not* bear the "Compact Disc Digital Audio" logo. > hmmmm....
Yep, apparently that logo is a trademark of Phillips, and supposedly they are not allowing music companies to put the logo on copy-protected CDs, because they do not conform to the red book standard for CDDA.
I will try again later to play the CD in Winamp (i have versions 2.78 and Beta 3). I think if this album won't even play in Winamp, won't play in Linux, or crashes my OS or application every time I try to do so, it is genuinely defective, and I guess I'll have to try an exchange. If this keeps happening with new copies, obviously something is amiss.

If you just installed EAC and you hadn't had it working before, than this is a known problem. On some systems (esp. Win2K and XP, but not always) the install program doesn't configure itself correctly to work with your CD-Rom drive. There's a fix that has worked so far for everybody I've talked to with this problem... From the File menu, select Drive Options, on the Drive tab click the "autodetect read command now" button, then OK and try again.
> Did your ripped flies play properly?
Yeah, once you get EAC ripping properly, the files are fine. It's kind of confusing because it will look like it's working at first, but you end up with empty wav files. That fix should hopefully work for you.

Hi guys,
Sorry to be such a pisser on the parade, but this has happened to me at least twice now. Both incidents occurred with "Scenes from NY" and "6 Degrees". It seems that I can't get a decently pressed CD at all. I put it in, thinking it's okay, usually into my portable first cause I love to walk and listen to tunes. Then in certain spots, I get this cutting out like it can't read it. I take it out, no apparent scratches or anything that I can see. It's as if the coding is fucked up. So I try it in other players and it's just as bad, if not worse!!!!!!
Now the real kicker here is that I replaced "Scenes from NY" twice with no real luck. The end of "Silent Man" is still fucked to a certain degree. Now "Blind Faith" is doing the same thing to me on "6 Degrees." Am I the only one noticing this or is there really some manufacturing bullshit going on here.
This is a real big fucking inconvenience to me especially when I love the band so much.
I'd really appreciate some answers and solutions here.
Erik.
