    SPOILERS

    SPOILERS

Haven't seen anyone post a set list yet, so I figured I'd tell you what
they played. I may have the order for the first set off, but here it
    is:

    FIRST SET:
Tape Intro/End of Scenes From a Memory
    The Glass Prison
    Strange Deja Vu
    6:00
    Surrounded/End of Rush's 2112
    Peruvian Skies
    Scarred
    The Great Debate
    Pull Me Under

    SECOND SET:
    Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence

    ENCORE:
    Home
    The Spirit Carries On
    Learning to Live

GREAT Concert, although it was very loud; there were times when James
hit some high notes that seemed to be above the pain threshold. The
crowd went nuts when they went into the last part of 2112. JP even did
'Attention all planets of the Solar Federation...We have assumed
control'. Way cool. If they ever cover that Rush Album, it would be
    quite a show.

    There you go

I just have to speak up here. Every time I read or hear the term
"Overplaying" I just get absolutely irritated. It is totally ridiculous to
use this term. Do you go to work and "overwork" and get criticized for
creating an amazing presentation? or designing an intricate yet manageable
web site? or doing a great job at what ever you do? I don't think so, you
    get praised and encouraged.
    Get my point yet?

Aristotle thought that music should be simple, this is the only point that
I disagree with. Portnoy (and any musician for that matter) should be
encouraged to use his/their full potential. GO FOR IT MIKE!!!!

    Just a thought.

Not exactly. Music especially is one field where you CAN do too
much. Sometimes, playing fast or intricately is done without any artistic
reasoning behind it, and it can feel like it's too much, just like
something can be too loud or too flashy. Because music is an aesthetic
medium, that people can judge upon based solely on their impressions of
it, there IS such thing as overplaying.

Besides, there is also a point in, say, a presentation, where the amount
of detail work you put into the piece isn't necessary. After that it just
    becomes fluff.

Well, K.I.S.S. is a very good philosophy, but there is a time and a place
for artistic intricacy. However, if they (DT, that is) don't have any
artistic reason for doing what they do when they do it, it just looks like
they're showing off, and nobody likes a show-off.

The only stupid question is the one that is never
asked, except maybe "Don't you think it's about
time you audited my tax return?" or "But officer,
isn't it morally wrong to give me a warning when,
    in fact, I was speeding?"

Probably this has already been posted, but the Chicago 3/16 show
featured MASTER OF PUPPETS played again in its entirety, as well as a
mostly-different set from the previous night.

Aside from some apparent monitor problems during the beginning of
    "Battery," it sounded great!

Well, if you're going to take it that far, I'll have to strongly disagree with you. If you do something well, there is absolutely no reason for you not to do it well all the time, and do it often, simply because it gives you pleasure to do that one thing well. Moreover, having an "artistic reason" behind a large amount of notes played really fast does not mean you're not showing off. Most people won't even see the "artistic reason," and those who do oftentimes have no clue where it comes from. So, the question arises, what exactly is showing off? You'd be insane to claim that no one who's really good should show off.

To be a bit more brief, I'll just say that I have no problem with good compositions, "artistic reasons," overplaying, showing off, or any combination or derivative of the above. Bands like Dream Theater get into music to do what they want, and if you don't like it, criticism, especially that which is not thought out, is otiose.

    Hi, folks:

Yes, the header, 'Free Pair of NEARfest Tickets,' was designed to get your attention. But that would really be cruel if I was just making it up. And I'm not that cruel.

As it so happens, I do have an extra pair of tickets I won't be able to use. While I could easily recoup my money by selling them, I've decided it would be much more fun to simply GIVE THEM AWAY!!!

Yup! I'm going to give them away - FREE!!! Before I get into details, here's a reminder of who will be performing at NEARfest 2002:

Steve Hackett (England) Nektar (USA and England) (with Larry Fast, yet!) Caravan (England) echolyn (USA) Isildurs Bane (Sweden) Enchant (USA) Gerard (Japan) Miriodor (Canada) Spaced Out (Canada) La Torre dell'Alchimista (Italy)

And let us not forget a special appearance by artist Roger Dean!

The total face value of these two orchestra seat tickets, row O, is $170. However, I guarantee you the experience and memories will be priceless!

In addition The Artist Shop has an extra room reserved for three nights at the Lafayette Yard Marriott, the closest hotel to the NEARfest venue, that I'll no longer be able to use. Currently this hotel is booked solid for NEARfest weekend! Whoever wins the NEARfest tickets will have the option of taking over this reservation. (And to be clear, when I say 'taking over the reservation,' I mean that should the ticket winner decide he or she wants that reservation, then he or she will be responsible for the cost of the reservation which is at the Special Events rate of $119 + tax per night. In other words, The Artist Shop will not cover the cost of the hotel reservation.)

OK, so I've caught your interest. To become eligible to win this pair of tickets you simply need to fill out The Artist Shop's on-line entry form. There are no entry fees and no purchase is necessary to enter this contest. All entries will be subscribed to The Artist Shop's e-mail newsletter, if not already subscribed, and that subscription must be maintained until the results of the random drawing are announced. Once the contest is over, you're free to unsubscribe, but I'm betting you'll find it worthwhile ;-)

You must be 18 or older to enter and only one entry per person is allowed. Any questions you may have about NEARfest 2002 itself (when, where, who's playing, etc.) can be answered by visiting their excellent website <http://www.nearfest.com>.

So, if you would like a chance to win this pair of tickets, you'll find all the details at <http://www.artist-shop.com>. Good luck everyone!!!

    Gary

    Intermission

Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence (overture was all keyboards and played over the speakers)

Finally Free (piano only) was played over the speakers after the show was over

3/16/02: ending of SfaM straight into The Glass Prison 6:00 Beyond This Life Surrounded Burning My Soul (demo with Hell's Kitchen in the middle) Another Hand/The Killing Hand Another Dimension Peruvian Skies The Great Debate

    Intermission

Encore: Home The Spirit Carries On Take The Time (JLB and MP both played at the "Siamese monster" for the intro to the song!) Jam with JR and JP trading off solos followed by parts of By-Tor and the Snow Dog

Finally Free (piano only) was played over the speakers after the show was over

Both shows were amazing!!! No complaints from me. And both were being videotaped, so who knows if they'll pop up somewhere. Does MP tape lots of shows for his own personal collection?

'Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence' is #19 in the Australian alternative album charts, first week in.

Also strong rumours of an Australian show at the end of April following on their Asian tour.
