In a mind-blowing e-mail sent on the extremely historic date of 5/2/02 4:01
    PM, Ilia thusly spaketh:

    > Didn't DT almost break up in events that followed the explosion
    > of PMU as a pseudo-hit?

No your getting that mixed up with the events of 97-98. Long story short,
Mike was upset and frustrated over his loosing control of the bands
direction (which in turn went to the label execs). Mind you, this was
something he was wary of, but was willing to give a try, but really didn't
like all the extra people trying to mainstream DT's sound and songwriting.

If memory serves me correctly, a day or two before the fan club show in
Rotterdam, Mike announced he was quitting the band, but fortunately the
other band members convinced him to give it a little time and think things
over before making that decision permanent. He did...the rest is history.

Something interesting came in the mail today. Damn, it is cool being a
college music director! Anyway, thought some of you might like to check
it out. Winds--Reflections of the I. It is out on The End Records. It
is the same company that put out one of my favorite records of the year,
Green Carnation -- Light of Day, Day of Darkness. The album is
prog-metal. It is a concept album as far as I can tell. All of the
instrumentation is top notch. The vocalist doesn't have a huge range
but he can sing. One reason I do like the vocals is that they don't
sound wimpy/cheese. There are some interesting elements to their sound.
One thing I noticed right away was the violin player, Vegard Johnsen.
The way the band utilizes the violin reminds me of Jerry Goodman in the
Mahavishnu Orchestra. I am not a fan of classical string instruments in
metal/prog-metal (or whatever the fashionable term of the day may be).
However, it works for me in this instance. It doesn't come off sounding
cheesy like Therion. The guitar player, Carl Tidemann, is good. He
plays in that neo-classical style. Thankfully, he knows when to stop
unlike some. Andy Winter plays keys. He is an atmosphere type player,
which works for me just fine. The drummer is solid.

Well, for whomever is interested, here's the skinny on our favorite
Progressive Music publication (to read and bash at this point, as they
are mutually inclusive) direct from John Collinge posted on his
    website...

"To all Progression subscribers and readers:

The anticipated mailing date for the
    long-delayed
issue No. 40 is now late May. We are now in
    the
final stage of production and plan to go to
    print the
week of May 6. I apologize for this, and
    anticipate
that once issue No. 40 is out, our regular
publication schedule will resume. Though I
    have
been reluctant to share details of a highly
    personal
nature, I have struggled with a serious health

problem that compromised progress on the new
issue, along with the recent death of my
    mother.
                              These factors, coupled with computer-related
snafus of a few months ago (which deleted
two-thirds of issue 40's advertising content),
    the
effects of Sept. 11 on mail and newsstand
                              deliveries, and other unforseen obstacles,
snowballed into this lengthy delay. I am
    confident
that the worst is now behind, and look forward
    to a
great 2002 for Progression, now in its 10th
    year of
publication. The summer issue of Progression,
    No.
41, will be a special Tenth Anniversary
    edition.
Again, my apologies for this unforeseen delay.

Anyone with questions related to their
    subscription,
or delivery of back issues, is welcome to call
    me at
                              (800) 545-7371 or (978) 970-2728. And, if you
    plan
to attend the upcoming NEARfest festivals,
    please
drop by the Progression table and say hello.
    Kind
                              regards, John Collinge, Publisher, Progression

                              Magazine.

Progression issue No. 40 will include the
    following:
                              * A full-length CD sampler from the Shroom
    Records
                              label.
                              * Feature interviews with: Jean-Luc Ponty,
    Birdsongs
of the Mesozoic, Cairo, Ken Baird, Michelle
    Young,
guitarist Rick Ray, Zero Hour, NEARfest
    organizers
                              Chad Hutchinson and Rob LaDuca.
                              * Feature on King's X vocalist Doug Pinnick.
                              * Coverage of the NEARfest 2001, Progday 2001
                              and ProgPower 2001 festivals.
                              * Analysis of the neo-progressive movement, by

                              noted prog author Jerry Lucky.
                              * Analysis of progressive music's romantic
    tradition,
                              by David Layton.
                              * All regular columnists, news and reviews.

AND also: Metalblade news: "Cattle Decapitation has finished recording
their next CD." Many farmers MAY be aggitated about this. Remember, I
don't make it up, I just report it... lol/np

    would rock!

That would be cooler if Racer X hadn't already covered it.

    Hey all!!
I sampled some of king crimson and it sounded very interesting. So, out of
all their recordings, which one would you recommend to start? Can I get a
    description of their eras, etc.?

    Thanks,
    Elisa
