Rob - it was the band's intention to make this album the way they did. It
was in the interviews of the band before the CD came out.
To make a classic metal album. Look at it this way - they got that out of
their system and will be on track to progressing even further on the next
CD.
Your copy of Pull Me Under stops suddenly? May wanna get your CD player
looked at ;)

My intro was back in 1992, a mutual friend of my wife and me was into Yes as
I was and she (Jen Albert) recommended Dream Theater. She said that they
had a new CD coming out in a few weeks and had another one that was already
out of print. So I picked up Images and Words that Tuesday that it came
out. I can still remember running into the living room when Pull Me Under
ended suddenly thinking my damn CD player was fucking up AGAIN! Too funny
really. It took me a few listens before I had it down.
And yeah I do miss those days! ToT is still hitting on 4 of 7 cylinders for
me but on the plus side, I can get through it without getting pissed off.
Still, it's a shame when I listen back to the older stuff and realize what
they can do if they take the time. LOL! Horrible pun.

I often wonder what Rob wonders. What if the boys spent a whole month or two writing the album? As one of the likers of TOT, I think if they could make that insane album in 2 weeks, just IMAGINE!!
Throw in an outside producer and guest musicians maybe? ;)

I think one of my top fave songs by DT is "To Live Forever". Watching that
video tape with the extended guitar section still freaking blows me away.

I'll always have a soft spot for I&W in my heart, and it's easily one of
the five most influential CDs of the prog-metal genre, but due to its
production iffiness, I prefer SFaM slightly, or several bootleg live
recordings, since they sound more "organic" than I&W. Favorite song
might still be "Learning to Live," although it varies by mood.

Special guest guitarist/keyboardist/singer/writer Daniel Gildenlow = teh
Win! :P
It was a bit disappointing he didn't get much spotlight on the TA DVD... I
know he wasn't part of the band, but hey, he's on stage, tucked up the back,
and hardly shown. Anyone who didn't know who he was would have thought he
was some random session musician picked off the streets.

As thought everyone when he toured with The Flower Kings. He rocked on the percussion / guitar and keyboards! :)
I'm excited for TPE part 2 and BE from PoS.... waiting for some news on it.

Now that the new year is almost upon us, I wanna thank all of you for your relentless ramblings, your hilarity and most of all your music recommendations! I have succeeded in becoming one of those poor bums who lives on the street but has garbage bags full of CD's. Happy new year and all that crap! :)

Happy Holidays everybody! I recently got the
self-titled album from the "band" Frameshift, and I am
certain that this will be THE album of the year for
me. What an amazing album!!! Musically, it's
progressive yet accessible, with some slow, incredibly
beautiful and catchy songs, and some heavier tunes
that balance the cd perfectly. The songs are
extremely well crafted, with no excess fat that one
would think needed to be trimmed off. I think this
album has a feel similar to that of Conception's
"Flow", perhaps mixed in with a tiny bit of Spock's
Beard or Neal Morse. The musicians are incredibly
good, especially Henning Pauly who plays almost
everything. There are no wasted notes on this album,
despite the fact that it lasts for over 75 minutes.
And, to leave the best for last, the vocals are simply
stunning!!! This is definitely one of James' best
performances, period. There's a lot of feeling on his
delivery, he sings all along his incredible range, and
simply shows a masterful control of his voice. The
main focus of this album is definitely on his voice
and the message he's expressing through the lyrics,
evidenced by the fact that there are no long
instrumental passages (which, by the way, are not
necessary and I'm glad they did it that way). The
topics dealt with in the lyrics are all related with
evolution. It's pretty weird at first to listen to
scientific lyrics, but the topics are so interesting
(at least for me) that one gets used to this weird
feeling. This album has a lot of highlights, but I
think THE highlight of the album is the song La Mer.
Stunningly beautiful, with a catchiness that just
makes you try to sing it screaming off the top of your
lungs, with goosebumps all over your body!!!!! This
album is amazing, a masterpiece that everybody needs
to have in their collection.
And this wasn't a paid advertisement :-)

Great review Alexis.. I got this CD several days ago, but have yet to
listen to it. Been very busy with work, but I'm sure over New Years this
will find its way to the CD player.
