Geoff Tate probably has the biggest range of any "rock" vocalist I've heard. Super low to super high. (Check their first album for some killer high parts, a la "Queen of the Ryche")
Any Kamelot listeners out there? I just picked up their Epica album and I'm hooked. Their lead singer used to be out of control, in my opinion, but the last two albums have been awesome. I really, really like Epica. Go figure, but it's an epic album, 60 minutes strong, with a mix of crunchy guitars and double-bass drums, and a couple of nice ballads. I think I like SymphX more than Kamelot, but they're similar. (compare to SX's "V" CD--love it, btw)

From interviews I've read, and from getting to talk to James a little
bit on the last tour, I think he is definitely involved in his vocal lines.
I don't think the rest of the band say "here sing it exactly this way." He
certainly shows off his diversity on the Mullmuzzler stuff as well.

I like Kamelot, but I don't think they really sound anything like
Symphony X at all. Karma is a very strong album. I don't like Epica as
well, but it is kind of new still.

for what it's worth, I did end up buying that empty
tremor cd after Arash's exhortations (apologies if
necessary on that comment), and it was derivative,
sure, but not bad, and considering their age at the
time, rather impressive. Never did follow up on the
band; did they release anything afterwards?

Yup so did I. I wonder what's the story behind the lineup changes.
I heard about the label problems before though. Well, Magna Carta is a
great label for starting bands (or at least, it used to be, can't
remember to have bought a new MC release over the last years), but they
suck at supporting a fairly succesful band or a band with tour
potential. Nowadays InsideOut is definitely the label to go with.

Hello all,
I'm not at all surprised why more people are not into prog rock. As with
any genre, prog contains certain stereotypes, such as:
1. Typically high-pitched male singers who are just about drama queens.
2. Musicians who spend more energy killing time (i.e. wanking) than
kicking ass.
3. Extended songs/albums with story lines that are often taken way too
seriously by zealous fans ("Who killed Mary in 'operation:mindcrime'?"
"Who assumed control at the end of '2112?'" and so on.)
4. Only appeals to the "thinking man" set.
Sure, there's more quality in Prog than in regular Pop music, which is a
product of both greater talent and higher ideals on the part of Prog
musicians. Perhaps the intricacy of Prog is too much for casual music
listeners to handle. However, do these qualities redeem "progressive"
material that is not compelling? I think not.
In contrast to Prog, look at Punk. Punk music is not known for refined
vocals, time signature changes, or carpal-tunnel inducing musicianship.
Punk is straight-from-the-gut emotional music, grounded in reality not
fantasy. It's no wonder that Punk has attracted far more fans and
critical respect than Prog ever has.
Face it: Prog is not the best genre, and don't expect other people to
appreciate it like you do. No amount of virtuosity can substitute for the
spirit that is present when one _relates_ to a song. Perhaps current and
future Prog musicians should realise this when they attempt to craft
their next masterpiece.

Pointless remark. There's no such thing as 'the best genre'. Time for
some Einstein: it's all relative and subjective. I happen to like prog,
you may not so to me discussion is closed.

Why should they? They like what they're doing, and so do a number of
other people (constituting a more than significant proportion on this
list for instance :-)). I've never heard of a genre changing itself
because of people not liking it. Will never happen.

The next Dali's album will most likely NOT be on MC, I'm not sure
what label it will come out on.

OK. So, I bought One Hour by the Concrete Lake a while back. I've listened to it several times, and it does absolutely nothing for me. It all has too much of a "sameness" about it, I guess. I don't dislike it, I just have no desire to ever listen to it again. That being said, is it worth my time to try out any of their other stuff? If OHbtCL is a "typical" POS CD, then perhaps they're just not my style. Any one have any input?

I really hope you're kidding about trading in your Morphine for anything, cat. =) I can't listen to DT when I am trashed ALL the time, which is most of the time. =D Sandmann really sweeps the dames off their feet, rest his soul.

Remedy lane is even more emotional than OHBTCL. I am guessing they just are not your cup of tea.
