I remember hearing or reading Mike state that with a 3+ hour long show, they
want the venues to have seats so that fans can sit down if they so choose.
They realize that not everyone is gonna be willing to stand in a general
admission pit for 3+ hours, so they try to pursue venues with seats when
    possible.

Besides, many of the larger venues (primarily theaters) they are playing
normally have assigned seating for all concerts anyway.

More interaction with the band can be in different forms. In some cases, it
means actual personal interaction with the band members. In many others, it
means providing exclusive interviews and articles with band members, perhaps
being able to write in questions to the band, to get exclusive merchandise
(fan club CDs, shirts, autographed items, etc), fan get-togethers and access
to exclusive parts of a website.

The whole idea of a fan club is to promote the band to those who have an
interest in them, and to give them something more in terms of who they are
    and how they work.

    > IMHO the whole hard core fan base was developed and supported by the
    > FCs, because only through them can someone get really personal with the
    > band. But has that developed also some kind of a customer-buyer relation
    > between the fans and the band? "You pay me and I'll make you friends
    > with the band" something like that.

Actually, when fan clubs offer meet'n'greets to the fans, it should be
considered more of a perk of the fan club than "I'm paying X dollars so that
I can meet the band...and I get this membership thrown in also."
Unfortunately, many fans do look at it that way - in the case of DT's fan
clubs, many are subscribed just to get the CD - they could care less about
    the fanzine.

In all honesty, when fan clubs in general offer the CD and/or meet'n'greet,
it's to further encourage fans to sign up, but certainly not to replace
everything else that the fan club provides. The fan clubs shouldn't be
blamed just because fans look at it as "paying just for the CD or
    meet'n'greet."

    > Someone else has said earlier that we're _extorted_ by DT for being
    > fans. I feel that it's the best word he could ever use... :o(

Feel extorted if you must, but no one's putting a gun to your head to sign
up for the fan club, or for that matter to purchase any of DT's CDs or to
see them live. YOU decide to make those purchases. Don't blame them for your
    decisions. >:-(

yeah, last time i saw ``An Evening with...'' was as the 9:30 club here in DC. there are no (or at least _very few_) seats, so i stood the whole time. my back was sore for days, but it was worth it! same with Hammer of the Gods in NYC -- i was standing the whole time and paid for it later.

    Paul Cashman sez:

<< Decent floor tickets for that show, BTW, were a pricey $45.=A0 With every passing year, sadly, the number of obvious Savatage fans and metal fans in the audience dwindles. The mighty Al Pitrelli was the (ahem) last in line at the after-show signing, and as I shook his hand I said jokingly "Thanks for a great show...from one of the few, the proud,...the metalheads who can still afford a ticket to this show."=A0=A0 He chuckled, rolled his eyes and said "I hear ya there, brotha."=A0 Not condescendingly, either; he understands.=A0 :) >>

    Hey... long time lurker here...

I have no pity for Savatage, if they have fewer fans it's because they have consistently alienated their fanbase.

    1. Lots of former members have said less than stellar things about the band (Wacholz, Skolnick),

    2. Their lead singer left under questionable circumstances (Zak Stevens, to spend more time with family, though now he's going on tour with Circle II Circle. Rumor is he was just pissed about how the band was doing things)

    3. After Al Pitrelli left to join Megadeth (being the band whore that he is, good player notwithstanding) they hired a respected metal guitarist (Jack Frost) and then totally screwed him over by firing him when Pitrelli was lef t jobless a few months later after Megadeth imploded.

Add that to ticket prices, long breaks between album releases (compared to say DT, Maiden, etc.), and the crap that is their website (forum always bing closed, non-existent fanclub, lack of news updates) and it's quite surprisin g Savatage have any fans left at all. Streets is a masterpiece, and they have plenty of other good albums, but the band itself kinda sucks in their practi ces.

Jesus, Al agreeing with me? I hope this is sarcasm, because I'm not ready for the opening of the Seventh Seal.

A thought on meet n' greets...

I believe TSO consists of two touring companies, with lots of "new" faces. The overiding theory here is that when performers are "new", they tend to enjoy meet n' greets. Thus TSO may not be so jaded to the idea. On the other hand, the members of DT enjoyed it at the beginning and may simply be getting tired of it. It's more of a business activity now, and they are treating it more like that.

that was the last "Evening with..." show i saw with DT too, on the World Tourbulence tour. we (3 of us) were fortunate enough to be in the first 30 or so people in line. actually, that's where i first met the infamous Kez, as we were shouting "BAFU!!" & happened to be 2 of the only people apparently from this list in attendance. anyhow, being so close to the front meant we were able to dash up to the balcony level. this meant being raised above everyone else, sitting on bar stools with elbows resting on the bar at the balcony's edge, drinks not far from reach. by far my favorite show in terms of the bands performance, as well as the comfort & view that i had while watching. in my younger days, i used to go to shows to mosh, headband, etc... now, i'll take seats any day over having to stand for 3+ hours. did that at the Electric Factory for Spock's & DT. between the wait outside & the show that easily hit the 4+ hr mark, my legs haven't known such pain since i kickboxed. gimme seats & an unobstructed view. my concert will be complete. :)
