Oh geez, at first glance I thought it said WIGR Rock 101 :)

Anywayz, I picked up some new (at least to me :) shiznitz this past week,
and I thought some reviews were needed.

    TOURNIQUET "Vanishing Lessons"
Well, it's good metal, but the speed stuff is gone. It's too bad, they
were really good at it. Nice guitar harmonies everywhere, and it's got
Lenaire's thick trademark sound on it. The track "K517" blew my ass away!
Was this a recorded harpsichord part, or was a member of the band playing
this? I don't wanna give anything away, but every drummer on this list
should buy the album just for that! The vocals are a little bit rough in
parts, but it beats the heck outta the old singer. The new(er) vocalist
actually sounds human. This album on a whole has some real gems and some
real duds too. I'd give it about *** out of a possible *****.

    DELIVERANCE "X, A Decade of..."
Any slayer fans out here that don't like the satan shit? CHECK THESE GUYS
OUT! 16th note double bass at 250 bpm is truly a sound to behold :) This
is quite possibly the best metal/thrash/power CD I've bought in a long
time. The album opener, "Victory" kicks your ass from the very get-go, and
the song that finishes the album, "Sanctuary", sounds like a melodic
Anthrax with Geoff Tate singing. When they do the fast stuff, the vocals
get a touch deathy (however not to the cookie monster point-of-deathness
(tm)), and when they do the slow stuff, they rank right up there with
Savatage and Metallica for me (for me, DT gets a bit cock-rockish on the
ballads). Vinnie gives it **** out of a possible *****. Maybe if they
added more types of guitar sounds and changed up the drum beats a bit,
they'd be *****, but the CD is still awesome.

When comparing slayer to Christian speed metal bands like Deliverance and
Tourniquet, that phrase the clown said in Spawn comes to mind, "Why does
Heaven get all the geniuses and we get all the retards?!" (Thanx Chris!)

    ;)~

    On with the reviews...

    RUSH "Exit...Stage Left"
Live versions of YYZ, LA Villa Stangiato, Closer to the Heart...eh...enuff
    said. ****** out of a possible ***** :)

IRON MAIDEN (video) "From There To Eternity"
22 songs, lots of live footage, little Misfits guy running around,
Queensrychy "Wasting Love" vid, and THE TROOPER...all for $10. *****
While these guys have a different type of basic groove than most of the
music I listen to, they're still incredible and they're slowly becoming one
of my favorite bands (along w/ DT, 'Deth, 'tallica, 'tage, 'thrax, etc.).
This vid is a must have for all IM fans!

    Good stuff.

    Laterz,

Finally, I wanted to run this concept by the jam and see how y'all feel
about it. I've got this feelin' :), that ANM IS THE SONG FOR THE RADIO.
Of course, at 8+ minutes, it's too much for the puny little radioheads
    to handle :)

But what do you think? Can a radio-friendly length be extracted out of
it? My feeling is that there are enough parts there that could be
trimmed down for radio (the intro, for example).

There are already several jammers, including myself, that have mentioned
liking the GROOVE of this song. It just has that sound that will grab
    people.

Not that Burning My Soul isn't a great song. I think it will certainly
grab the metal fans' attention. Don't you think ANM has a greater
potential of grabbing a wider range of attention, though? Like, from the
rock/hard_rock fans who don't personally like metal...

I may be completely off base here, but when I hear ANM, I hear radio hit
    all over it!!!

Philly finally played the new DT. In fact it was the first song of a show
    called Rockers! ><

It's about damn time!!! I've e-mailing them from every e-mail address I have
access to (even created a few fake ones juts to request DT) and asked
everyone I knew to e-mail them. They must've just added the song, they told
me about a week ago that it wasn't on their rotation. FUCK!!!! I must've
missed it by a few minutes as I turned the radio on at 11:10! 'Rockers' is
one of the very few good music radio programs I've heard with two good DJs.

Just wondering if anyone has heard any of the new stuff on any of
the local stations. I haven't really been listening but I
guess there is a chance that 98 "Rock" might play it once
or twice. They'll probably put it on "Love it or Shove" and all
of the 15 year olds will call in and say "this sucks!". Actually,
the scarier thought is that they WILL love it. Doh!!

    - >Are there any Yes fans that could give me a rundown on the Yes albums >please. Which one is best for a DT fan to start with?

Yes has gone through so many different incarnations, and because of that, their sound has really run the gamut of prog as well. Particularly for DT fans, though, and especially for me, the Golden Age of Yes was the early to mid- 70's. Definitely the first album to get, and by both the band's and most fan's admission the one that comes closest to embodying the musical vision they sought at the time, is CLOSE TO THE EDGE. That has three songs, one twenty minute and two ten minute, that are each brilliant. RELAYER follows that same format, both in song amount and length, and I'd call that a close second. Of course, there's room for debate here, but I'd say after that consider FRAGILE, THE YES ALBUM, and GOING FOR THE ONE. All are brilliant, but in terms of complexity, progressiveness (if that's a word), and song structure, CTTE and RELAYER are the best two. If you're a King Crimson fan and/or a drummer, then put an extra star next to CTTE and FRAGILE, because Bill Bruford plays on those two albums.

Make sure you get them remastered as well--the sound difference compared to the originals is just incredible.

    Hi there,

Neil Gallop commented in ytsejam digest 2963: >Last night's edition of Metalla featured Savatage and their new album. What >I heard reinforced my opinion of Savatage - this sort of music just doesn't >do anything for me. They played a video (I think from Gutter Ballet) that >contained almost all of the cliches I could think of for this genre - long >hair being waved around, wanky solos that are accompanied by lots of >grimaces, tight trousers, shots of forests by night with flames everywhere. >They did, however, display some taste by requesting the video of 'Empire'

Hmmm. I can understand that you dislike this *sort* of music but the comments about the videos are a little bit shallow... The video from "Gutter ballet" was "When the crowds are gone". True that it is filmed in a very 80ish style (it's dated 1989) - the band in a live situation in some empty theatre with lots of pyro-technics.. But it totally fits the song's mood and lyrics (imho).

The other video-clip was "One child" from "Dead winter dead". And to say that this clip contains all the cliches is just superficial and if not ignorant (sorry if this sounds a bit harsh..) Even if one doesn't know that the whole album DWD deals with the war in Yugoslavia - if you just listen to the lyrics you'll understand that this songs deals with the topics death and survival. With this in mind i think it's only appropriate to show scenes from the war as well as "shots of forests by night with flames everywhere". I don't want to whine any longer - all I ask you is: listen to the song, the lyrics and then watch the videoclip again...

Which leads me to my main point: How many of you don't listen to lyrics at all? My CD-player runs all day in my office where I don't have the chance to really _listen_. So I understand the part of just _hearing_ music and feeling the mood that comes with the sound. I also enjoy just drifting away with sound, without understanding what it is all about, just enjoying the feelings and maybe a cold drink :) But I also really like to listen to the lyrics (or try to read them if I don't understand them) to get to the story or the words that are connected with the images (hint! hint! - DTC).

Listening to music just for the sound is like looking at pictures just for the colours and not for the image. (Yeah, I love the Mona Lisa just for the nice brownish shading..)

I don't even have a problem with religious/cheesy/explicit lyrics as long as I can relate to them in some way. That's the main reason why "Wait for sleep" and "Surrounded" are still two of my alltime favorite songs...

that's all I have to say right now (more than in the last 2300 yjams:). and this is only part 1....

part 2 - and again on the topic of Savatage :)

I received "the wake of Magellan" this weekend and have to say I already love this album. It tells a story in 13 songs about... well read/hear it for yourself it's just too long to summarize here - in short it's a fictious story that picks up on some actual events and connects them to one big story of the ocean... The music is exactly what I had expected - just better! The production is very clear, crisp and heavy. Al Pitrelli and Chris Caffery demonstrate what it means to play heavy guitar without showing off too much. All the other instruments are right there, including Zak Stevens' and Jon Oliva's voice (J.O. on "Another way" and "Paragons of innocence"). This time there are two songs with several voices singing together: on the title-track and on "The hourglass". This really becomes a Savatage trademark and is done with perfection, although I still prefer "Chance". They even have two instrumentals on the album, one song over 8 minutes and they thank Dream Theater in the liner notes. (<- if that's not enough DTC...) The only thing that's missing for me is a really fast song in the style of "Taunting Cobras".

My recommendation: turn down the lights, light a candle, have a glass of good Whiskey (at least 12 years old Scottish Single Malt - Springbank did the job for me), take your headphones and _feel_ "The wake of Magellan")...

so much for now - read you - jerry :--)

A DTDT (or DDTT): Maybe this Dream Theater Band is just some kind of government induced illusion.. a combination of biological warfare (germs in the water/air) plus computer-audio with the main target to control the intelligent parts of the musicinterested people...

P.S. all you American football or baseball fans: did any of you ever see Stephen Hendry vs. Ronnie O'Sullivan :) ?

    Hey Ytsejammers!

I have a College radio show and I am toying around with a few good names for it. I have noticed that often some people will write to the jam and ask for suggestion for show titles. Well, I could use a few good suggestions for some titles, because I know that you Ytsejammers are a creative bunch! The show will feature classic- progressive- and Heavy rock...so anything that might relate to a band in these genres, or infer a title to a song of these genres, or anything just plain witty would be wonderful! I have a few thoughts about a title, but any and all further suggestions would be greatly appreaciated.

Thanks for all your time! (sorry for no DTC...though there will be plenty of DT played by me on the station if it makes you feel any better...)

Well, I don't think radio will ever play anything over 5 min. unless the band is supercedingly popular (i.e., popular=it's played on MTV). But as for MTV, hell, I flipped on that channel and some guy named Puffy had his vid start up...I flipped through the channels, watched a couple commercials, and checked out hbo, and after about 5 minutes of that, I flipped back on MTV and that stupid video was STILL playing! My point is, once again, unless some major payola starts goin' on or unless the world suddenly acquires some standard of taste in thier music, I don't think we'll be hearing ANM on the radio any time soon.

I STILL haven't heard Phoenix's now infamous KUPD play ANY DT in this past couple of weeks, not even Pull Me Under.

Ged, no kidding. People think that satanic shit's heavy? Slayer doesn't have anything on Tourniquet! Then again, when somebody says they're a Christian musician (word to ya mutha), thier title doesn't immediately conjure images of black jeans, sharp pointy guitars, a dude with long hair screaming, and 88th notes (are those even audible?).

I called my radio show: The show that never ends, Progressive Rock Radio, after the line in Carnival 9 from Emerson Lake and Palmer. My show ended about a month ago, so it is free to use.

Be sure you're doing your part to get DT on the radio. I've been hearing some great things about your requests... Someone mentioned recently that a DJ in New Hampshire (I think?) commented on the large number of requests for BMS. I have over 70 radio stations (and one satellite) listed on my site. Go check it out. Even if you e-mail one or two people each day, a little bit will definitely help!
