Hello everyone, it's BABS (remember my famous line?)
Yes, I joined the ytsejam back in November of '94.
Man, talk about walking down memory lane. I met so
    many cool people here!

Likewise, but a few months after the ACoS release for me. I bet there's a
ton of us 5+ year veterans here, we're just not the post-every-time-we-fart
variety (though at one point I was in the top-20 MFP).

    Album recommendation:

    Nordream "Memories Progression" (Metal Agen/Valiant)

A young Russian progmetal band with some killer hooks. Their slow-as-hell
    website:

    http://listen.to/nordream/

..which may or may not feature MP3s -- I haven't been patient enough to
wait for the thing to load up. They're a good band, at any rate, and
actually quote Kevin Moore on the inner tray liner (for those of you
    looking for a DT-connection).

My first 'jam was #32 after learning about it in one
of the forums on CompuServe. Jeez, that was a long
time ago. I have, however, unsubbed several times
over the years, and this is in NO WAY meant to sound
elitist, but this really isn't the place I go to get
the skinny on bands, and hasn't been for about three
years. I really get the 'jam more out of habit than
    anything else.

The best board on the net, IMHO, is still Perpetual

Argh. Don't make me feel old. I was here to sign the petition for that thing back in the day. heheheh. Of course, I did go on about a year-long hiatus after that. So I guess I've been here since Nov. '94 minus a year. Jeez... life still eludes me... -- KorgX3 hasn't found anything better to do in 6 years.

    Hi all...

I'm sure there are more than a few Allan Holdsworth fans here, and I count myself among them. He's actually my all-time favorite musician; hearing "Three Sheets to the Wind" off the "Road Games" mini-album changed my world completely. And don't forget, John Petrucci and Alex Lifeson (among many others) have stated that they are major AH fans as well.

    LURK MODE = OFF

I know you don't know me, but I've been on this list since about spring or summer of 1996. I used to be more talkative but I guess I'm just lazy. I think Pellaz knows who I am though hehe. I used to be known as "the guy with the huge Anthrax sig file," until Skadz told me to stop using it.

So, anyways, I just thought I'd make my yearly post today. See yaz,

This is a good thread! Actually I've been on the 'jam give or take 2-4 week absences while changing ISP's since the tour for "Images and Words"...probably right after PMU hit bit on MTV...so that would be...1992? early 1993?

What a long strange trip it's been!

The screenprinter had me in yesterday to approve the color of the yellow shirts. Black is black, but yellow mustn't be trifled with. So it's down to Jersey for a looksee. They look nice. It's going to be a bit more of warmer yellow than i'd hoped but it looks good. Not schoolbus yellow(which is orange), certainly not "gold", just a nice rich yellow.

of course it's not quite what i had put on the site, so we had to do a little re-adjusting of the inkcolors. Screenprinter's ink is thick gooey stuff that gets on you just by looking at it, so after 10 minutes of mixing inks, i remembered why I like designing 'em, not printing them.

And that's just the ink. This isn't the easiest of the craft trades by far. So in case anyone was curious, let me explain a bit about the process of making t-shirts.

Basically, you rub color onto the shirt using a stencil. of course if there's more than one color, you need more than one stencil. And ofcourse, when you remove the first stencil and place down the second one, you have to line it up perfectly. And the color from the first stencil can't touch anything(like your hands) or it will get all over everything. And, the stencil itself might have tiny imperfections that you could never possibly see, but you'll seethe little holes and dots on your shirt just fine as the result. So you have to go brush stuff over the holes in the stencil for where there's dots in the shirt, and for where there's holes in the shirt, you have to take a pin and poke the itty bitty piece of stencil that shouldn't be there. And, you have to lay the color down with a squeegee type device. In fact, it is a squeegee. you squeegee a blob of color across your stencil and where it's poked through, color will be on your shirt. But of course, you can't do it to slow or the color will be all lumpy and streaky. Too fast and it won't go down right either. wrong angle? start over. lift up squeegee during swipe? start over. sneeze? ha! gotta fart? that's no problem, the solvent fumes will hide the smell.

See, you need to stretch the shirt across a little platform so it's flat when you rub the color across. And of course if it moves, start over. So you have to spray the little platform with adhesive spray, and then when you take the shirt off, there's a little film of shirt material still glued on. And, if there happens to be any molecules in the air just then, those will be stuck as well. By the 4th shirt you'll have a 1-inch think layer of crap adhered to your platform so you have to get it off. BUT IT'S ADHESIVE. So you have this huge vat of solvent(the one that's hiding your fart) by your side and the whole time you're printing, you're breathing it, especially when you open it every fourth shirt to clean your platform off.

You'll also need the solvent to get the adhesive, the ink, and the dust, and the crap, off your hands, arms, eyes, shoes, other shirts, and the rest of the tri-state area.

So anyway, i approved the yellow shirt, and i should have a final prototype soon, and then mass-production starts in earnest. Thankfully I won't be there for that part. I'll let you all know.

    >Speaking of which, I wonder how many true old-timers are >still left on the 'jam. I mean, I wouldn't consider >myself a true old-timer, since I only joined in '97,

I've been here since the fall of 1998, by various e-mail addresses (new one in about three weeks!! woo!); I wouldn't call myself an old timer by any definition, but I'd say that I'll be here for the long haul!

    >Hmm... what do people think of Steve Lukather. The only >stuff of his I have is this instructional video he did >and a concert with Jeff Beck and Santana both >of whom completely wipe the floor with him. What's he >been doing recently?

I think Luke's a fantastic player; I don't like his tone so much, 'cos I'm one of the purists who still believe that EMG is the work of the devil (even if I do have them in one of my jazz basses, bwa ha ha!). But his command of dynamics, his arrangements, his compositional skills (both in terms of music and solos) and his singing are absolutely fantastic. If I could see G3 or Luke, I'd see Luke (although I'm still surprised that he never joined that gig). In fact, I think that the only band I'd have to skip a Luke show for would be Dream Theater - and on this list, that should go without saying!

I still maintain that he's a far mroe interesting player than any of your Joe Vais or Steve Satrianis, or your Wngyies or Romeo Montagues or whatnot.

But then, I like Toto; so I obviously know jack about music. ;)
